Anyone recommend any good ones in 2025? (That's not hardcore!)

I love rust type games that you can absolutely get lost in creating bases and maintaining them, and then have to go out and loot for resources etc.
Can anyone recommend any that they've played? even if they are not so well known?

Icarus looks good but i think it would be too "hardcore" and time consuming, Not to mention all the good stuff for the game comes in at a whopping extra expense as "Dlc"

7 Days to Die? Not exactly new, but it has finally left Alpha lol. It's voxel based, zombie killing, post apocalyptical with base building in it. Might be worth a go!

7DTD hasn't left alpha. The devs just relabelled alpha 22 as 1.0 to make it easier to sell on console and to "justify" doubling the price. It's still in alpha. It's still labelled as being in alpha on the loading screen, with the same message about it being in development and that it might not work and that it might crash. It's absolutely definitely still in alpha.

That said, I still think it's a very good game and a very good match for what the OP wants, especially with the thousands of mods available for it. Some of the mods are specifically for base building. Alpha 1.3 (the current version) is stable and the only things missing are a story (which isn't a big deal in this type of game), human factions with ranged weapons (also not a big deal in this kind of game) and the outside temperature affecting the player character (that was removed in alpha 1.0 for some reason and is supposed to make a return in alpha 2.0 some time this year). It's also a flat cost. There is no DLC. Not yet, anyway. None of the DLC would be as good as the mods, anyway.

Part of the edge it has regarding base building in particular is that the entire world is malleable. You want to dig a cave base inside a mountain? You can. You want to dig a leat so that a river will fill a moat around your base? You can. You want to rebuild a partially collapsed building to use as your base? You can. There's not much you can't do with the world. You want to demolish a skyscraper? You can. Level a large area to build a huge base? You can. You want to build anywhere, any size? You can, except for areas very close to traders. You want to build a nice tarmac road from your base to a trader, tunneling through mountains and spanning ravines? You can. Etc, etc. I once built a giant pyramid with its own power station to run the silly amount of lights on it. Why? To advertise a trader because the idea popped into my head.

You want a horde of zombies to attack your base every night? Every x nights? On random nights? Never? All of the above are options.

I've played 7DTD for ~2500 hours over the years. I'm not bored of it yet. However, that's because of mods. Vanilla 7DTD doesn't have that amount of duration.

As for "hardcore" and time consuming, that depends on what settings you choose and what mods you install. Vanilla on the lowest difficulty setting and with blood moon hordes turned off is relatively gentle. Some of the overhaul mods are extreme even on the lowest difficulty setting. Some of the overhaul mods are much more time consuming. For example, the overhaul I'm currently playing ("Craft Until You Die") places a far higher emphasis on scavenging and crafting and it's very time consuming because of that. You'll be spending a lot of time mining, farming, dismantling gameworld items for components and crafting.

There are mods that enable taking items from the gameworld to decorate your base. There are mods that add far more stuff to build for decorating your base.

Even vanilla, I think it would be a good match for what the OP wants. With the right mods, I think it would be a superb match for what the OP wants.

100% agree with this - I'm at around 2,200 hours and still go back to it regularly!

Currently playing the 'Escape From Tarkov' mod and this alongside Darkness Falls and various other overhauls have added so much to the game!

Project zombioid
7dtd
Enshrouded
Grounded
The forest

I'd be surprised if there isn't a Minecraft mod that does what you want tbh.

I'm not sure how well these fit what you're looking for.

7 Days to Die on a private server with a few mates is the pinnacle of gaming for me!

My only minor grievance is the lack of any discernable "endgame" - although being open-ended also has it's own advantages!

I've been playing Humanitz, again its early access. It can be had for as little as £6. Its like Project Zomboid but more action orientated. PZ is like watching paint dry, Humanitz is more on the side of playing Enshrouded, i.e. fun and fast. On the subject of Enshrouded, its the best survival game out there if you want a faster paced game without out zombies.
Also Vein is currently out as a demo and FREE, its a 1st person zombie survival game. Well worth downloading. Its more like Zomboid, but 1st person.

Its not hardcore, you can set it to easy and not do any of the bigger missions and just potter around a small area, there are radiant missions (grow some corn, supply some iron ore, hunt this bear etc..) you can do which are all close to wherever you set up..
The core game is fine as it is, the DLC is not needed. I play with a group and only 1 person needs the DLC to play those maps and get the benefit of the extra items.

But its not an 'Apocolypse' setting, its an earth like planet with just the wilderness/environment against you.

First of all, Thanks for the replies. :)

Actually i purchased 7DTD a long long time ago when it first came out and was super cheap, Not sure why i didn't get around to actually playing it but its definitely in my steam library so i will have to install that and have a bash!

See, I love Open world online survival games that you can choose you're path, I'm more of a "loot and base building" chill kind of guy these days rather than going hardcore PVP (Ie. Rust) But as many know in these type of games (especially online) you have to sink a TON of hours in and be online a lot to keep away pesky raiders and maintain base.

If it's open world loot and base build, I'd very hesitantly also say Ark and Conan, possibly the Dune game that's coming. I've played Ark with friends on a private server and there's progression and base building. It's not particularly complex base building IIRC, something like Valheim or Enshrouded are better, but it has it. Conan I threw in because while I've not played it, it seemed a bit like Ark in terms of style. It depends how much there you don't want PvP, and how many pure PvE servers there are (I assume they're a thing). Dune - well it's not out yet so who knows!

I'd also throw out No Mans Sky as a game to look into.

Ive played all mentioned plus more like soulmask etc but my recommendation has to be Enshrouded.
A metric tonne of content , massive open world to explore with great combat and probably the very best in building.

Just to endorse the post above by @loftie - Conan is a superb open world crafting survival game!

For me 7DtD and the various overhauls mods are brilliant though!

Zero Sievert is basically a 2D top down Stalker, which has you looting for resources and has some degree of base building back at your hideout. Doesn't resemble any of these 3D environments which are being suggested, but it might be worth a look for you. Like Stalker it has that atmospheric dread feeling and it is challenging to survive.

I'm enjoying Aska at the moment, you can recruit villagers and build a town and set them to do tasks trying to survive and fighting off attacks from baddies, waiting for a sale on Bellwright as that's similar too and there's also Medieval Dynasty which I liked

Tried Icarus and Enshrouded, they're decent if you like the solo survival/with friends, but I like building towns with villagers so the more colony sim survival games are for me, Enshrouded let's you get villagers but they don't actually do anything, they're just glorified shops would be cool if they actually worked like a colony sim

There's also Rimworld, Space Haven and Dwarf Fortress for a more RTS style colony sim

Good thread, and I see I have Conan in my library but not played it. I'll pick up another copy to try it with my teenage son together.

Any of these recommendations any good for single player or playing with randoms?
Enshrouded sounds interesting.
Edit: just bought enshrouded, look forward to giving it ago.
