Which AMD Cpu - 7950x vs 9900x vs 9950x vs ???

just look at any x3d vs its base cpu. its markedly better in certain games, its markedly more expensive.
its only better in games in the sense of 200 vs 150 fps, since the base 9950x is already going to be pushing some very high frames out, and unless at 1080p you're likely to be gpu limited on anything modern/RT.
what are you streaming normally, an intensive workload, something that benefits from 3d vcache or not?
Nah, not all that intensive, just OBS to YouTube/Twitch.

I'm putting together a 5080 build.

I think 9950x might be fine for me, I really don't play all that many games on PC and I suspect a 9950x and 5080 will be fine for my needs.

Although if it's only £100 or so more expensive maybe it's worth it...

Had a 7950X for ~2 years and its been great. I run it using ECO 65W as I don't need maximum full load speed most of the time, just use lots of threads. If I was buying now, it would depend on price between the 9950X and 7950X. Just had a look and it seems to be ~£100 price difference, If you use AVX512 it could be worth the extra £100.
I have no idea what that is so I'll assume I don't use it :)

Still, nice to get the better option if possible I guess, although not much difference in performance if I can afford the 9950x vs 7950 I should probably just get it.
 
one thing to consider, is if you get the cheaper 7950x now, you can use the money saved in a couple of years to get an 10950x or whatever, assuming the socket is the same which it seems likely will be.

Probably worth thinking about for a lot of people but ideally I don't want to be messing around with changing things.

I just want to buy something decent that will last me 3-5 years that I don't have to touch unless something breaks :)
 
Any will be plenty for regular use, you could just an affordable model ie 7700 (like I did) then leave it until you find it slower for 2-3 years then get the latest gen AM5 CPU socket ie 32 core 8ghz X3D Am5

I'm really not a fan of having to self upgrade, I know it's not all that difficult but if something goes wrong I find it too frustrating and there's not many places nearby to get someone to look at it.

So I'm trying to future proof as much as possible.

I guess the main question is - will the 9950x3d be as good as the 9950 for work stuff, but also better for gaming?

Or will the 9950 still be better for streaming/editing/photoshop etc.

If so I probably just stick to 9950 because although I want to game on this machine, it's not a priority.
 
I've personally avoided the 4000 series hard, as I didn't feel it was a big enough jump from the 3000 series for gaming or pushing the absolute best, or doing AI stuff. The difference between 2000 going to 3000 was amazing. 3000 to 4000? Not so much. But what's been suggested about the 5000 ahead, makes it tick many boxes as desireable in some fashion or other to jump to; VRAM (32GB?), less power hungry (as you mentioned), more perfomance where you'd want it (4K+, frames, Path/Ray tracing, AI, etc). Even if it doesn't go up in all those aspects, the differences should be enough for it to be fairly noticeable. Again, unlike 3000 to 4000.

9950x3d will be very close or match the 9950x due to the ccds being on top now easier to cool, it usualy is a marginal difference, no brainer the 9950x3d - especially for games, and hopefully in the near future the extra cache is used by software

Great thanks, given it's probably a 2-3 wait for the 5080 anyway I might as well now wait for the 9950x3d and get an idea of price.

I've already waited since Nov/Dec so once we have the x3d info there will probably be something else to wait for :cry:

For gaming performance, yes. But I was more referring to tech advancements primarily as well that saw increased use for stuff like ML/AI work, where the jump was very noticeable from 1000 and 2000 to 3000 series. But the jump from 3000 to 4000 series was very small differences other than on the gaming front. The 5000 potentially can do more but that's more with the increased VRAM. Otherwise, I totally agree on the gaming front, that the jumps you described are more accurate.
