AMD Casually Announces Machine Learning FSR

Will it run on the CPU? Is that how AMD are getting around the lack of neural processors? Use a much slower general purpose processor.

It explains why a video (OP) about the 9800X3D talks about FSR4.
It makes no sense to put it on the CPU. DP4a just like XeSS is my guess, with a specific hardware acceleration path for RDNA4 and beyond.

It's a major architecture change though. It isn't easy to just drop in ML cores which are integrated into the wider chip. Keep in mind the only reason Intel and Nvidia have it is because they had it from the very first iteration of the architecture.

It kind of depends on when AMD pivoted from, you can just upscale through TAA (hence compatible on all cards) approach.

AMD already has the equivalent to tensor cores in their CDNA GPUs, their UDNA arch which will come after RDNA4 is going to be a big change that will bring the CDNA tech together with RDNA.

But we are talking about RDNA4 here.

I completely get their Ryzen AI chips can already do ML inference and apparently as you've said CDNA.

So FSR4 ML is running on DP4a? That's a shame if that's the case as XESS runs a lot better on XMX vs DP4a when comparing XESS running on Intel hardware compared to AMD) Nvidia hardware.

Keep in mind that all it is (XMX vs DP4a) is a difference in acceleration, and AMD can close that gap a lot more if they so choose (different path, acc., give the AA more grunt etc.), unlike Intel who didn't want to (for obvious reasons - they care a lot less about how the DP4a path does, they preferred to keep it still somewhat performant for older GPUs that might use it, and still wasn't great etc.).

So AMD will indeed use AI accelerators in RDNA4. I also think it is good they are going all in and not some halfway house.

David McAfee and Frank Azor agreed to sit down with a small group of tech journalists for a roundtable talk, and we had a seat. In this article, we will try to share what we can
initially FSR 4 will be available on the RX 9000 series, but the company will assess specific SKUs from previous generations that it thinks are capable of the AI acceleration performance needed for FSR 4 SR algorithm to work without imposing a prohibitive performance or latency cost.

There is some hope with 120 1st gen AI accelerators, my 7800xt might get FSR4 in 1 years time lol.

That looks good. Has the usual trade-offs of excessive smoothing in return for a more stable picture. Not unlike what we've seen with PSSR.

Unfortunately the fatal issue remains adoption, because we saw even FSR 3.1 get a decent upgrade but outside of a few titles it has been missing (never mind any backporting). The ubiquity of DLSS (as well as its superior feature set) will still deserve a hefty premium which people will happily pay (I know I will).

AMD needs to hustle harder in terms of dev relations.

Any info as to whether or not this will mean more compatibility with things like LLM's and other such local AI work?

I was wondering the same thing and nobody has answered when I've asked about it before, guessing nobody knows.. I would highly likely buy one of these instead of a Nvidia card if it were just as good in those areas.

I don't even know if reviews would cover it either, probably just games.. so not going to know until others test it

This would absolutely seal the deal for me if it was the case. Would like nothing more than to pick up a 9070XT if I knew it would "just work" with my AI apps.

Doubt it, track record shows they don't do well in productivity stuff hence why people buy Nvidia.
If they got this part of the package sorted then they could become a true contender.
Thing is it requires a lot of commitment to deal with providing support which AMD lacks

so effectively DLSS 3.5 better than 3 but not as good as 4 which is pretty good in my book

Interestingly despite people saying DLSS4 is better than DLSS3,it is not always the case and FSR4 can be better in some cases.

Apparently AMD is using a mixed CNN/Transformer model for FSR4.

But many on here thought DLSS3 was the best,so FSR4 should be OK then? I expect not!
