Its a shame that Windows10 is coming to its end...

I'm staying on 10 because I like my HP Reverb and 11 doesn't have WMR. (And the Reverb doesn't work without WMR)

I'll just pay for the 1 year extension and hope someone makes a wired PCVR headset that I want to move to in that time.

My wife's PC has a 4770 CPU and it's just an email / web-browsing box to her. I installed Linux Mint on a second drive today and migrated her favorites into Firefox. She can dual-boot for a while and see if it will work for her.

I preferred Windows 2000 & Windows 7 since then Windows has been on a downward trajectory IMO, with a lot of effort Windows 10 can be made usable & less talkative and it's just about worth the effort for the security benefits.

Sadly they've broken Windows 11 so badly that its issues can't be fixed in a reliable manner, at least not all the while they keep adding/removing features instead of just addressing security issues, maybe when their focus switches to Windows 12 they'll stop fiddling about with Windows 11 and it will be stable enough to make the effort involved in taming it worthwhile.

Until that day comes though I'll be using Windows 10 even if i have to use an ESU hack that darael clued me into the existence of last month.
While there's still time remaining, I am hopeful that the ESU-bypass will work. If that buys Windows 10 a few more years, then that's good for the environment and everybody using the bypass.
Windows 10 ESU-bypass

Windows 10 customers may extend support for one or three years, depending on whether they are a consumer or business.

Preliminary tests show that Bypass ESU is working on Windows 10 devices as well. This would unlock security updates after October 2025 on systems on which the patch is installed.

The only downside, apart from the question of legality, is that Windows 10 Home updates cannot be extended for more than one year. Devices that run Windows 10 Pro on the other hand support at least three years of ESU updates in theory.

As much as I love the Windows 11 interface, the amount of bloat and junk that comes bundled with it, is annoying as hell and I often have to spend an hour or two removing or disabling stuff I don't need or want.

Up to W11 23H2 WMR still works, it was only removed from 24H2 onwards. That said I've still been looking for Linux alternatives as I also own a Reverb G2 headset, there's Monado + Envision but doesn't look like a perfect solution yet.

Windows updates re malware so I will keep using win 10 after it gets ''obsolete'' probably.
I only install updates when absolutely neccessary (when drivers require it, and a game requires a certain min version of drivers or windows).

When I turned auto0updates off for win 10 on my home pc, I have finally had a pc where nothing went wrong or broke for years and years.

I use Win 11 on work related laptops and it is indeed slower, less reponsive and more bloated.
For home I will probably stay at win 10 for a few more years andthen move to linux.

Do you have to pay for the extended support? I have win10 pro so I should be able to get another 3yrs somehow?.... Ive always got on with win10, well Ive got on with win11 too, but since going back to win10 from win11, its just nicer to use... The only reason Ive only ever upgraded windows in the past so to be able to run the latest games, but microsoft hasn't stopped you from running the latest games so far on win10

The cycle is complete.

The once hated Windows 10 is now the Windows people cling on to.

Amusing when I see people who gave me **** for saying Windows 7 was a much better OS and saying I should just embrace the future now clinging to 10, zero self-awareness with some people.

MS really need to pull their heads out their behinds and make a good OS again and remember that the primary purpose of an OS is to enable the end user.

Its all about money nowadays and making a decent quality OS goes out of the window... Yeah windows 7 was the last decent version they made.. Window10 either has just got better over time, or Windows11 has just made Windows10 seem a much better OS because Windows11 is worse than 10?

Agreed. 2000 was my fave too. Clean simple OS with NT (NT5). Windows XP was the bloated version (NT5.1) and I wasn't keen on Teletubbies mode, but I appreciate that it was the longest running version of Windows. It is nostalgia as well.

I rate 10 and 11 about the same, although I don't like that you can no longer lock the taskbar to the side of the screen. Something that I did since Windows 95.

I've always been miles behind on things.I've just gone to 11 from 10.

Seems ok so far. I installed mine as "world" region or something like that, which apparently installs less crap with it.

I've obviously still gone through disabling stuff.

People clinging to the wreckage after windows 7 sunk, anything to cling onto is better than being dragged into the abyss with 11!

I prefer Windows 10 but the Win 11 UI is better in some areas (and worse in others). Having said that, I'm still not a fan of Windows 10 either.

Win 7 was the last one that was primarily a solid OS with a few extras tacked on. 10 and 11 feel like a load of extras stuck together with a an OS tacked on as an afterthought.
