Warning - Beware of fake GPUs

I got from them a different router model in the past than was on the actual box (same look, but previous model that someone returned - scam too and not working properly either). On the plus side, they returned monies with apology for that, instantly. I always contact them by chat, making sure I talk to the human - I have evidence "on paper" then too. They are such a big and rich company it seems their approach is always to refund and make sure you're happy and not penny pinch. Good chances are you'll be fine. :) Though, to be clear, in my case it was sold and shipped by them, not just shipped by them. With 3rd party sellers I had more trouble but still got my monies back every time when the marketplace owner stepped in and told them refund or be gone from the platform.

With my SSD I ordered two evo 4tb direct from them, not a reseller. One was 512gb inside, with slight different internal packaging. I spoke to the CS rep straight away and she said to send them both back for an instant refund, nothing else was necessary (I double checked this). When I did they only refunded me for one, and discarded the item that "wasn't what they were expecting". It took loads of chats and they were asking me why I hadn't done this or that, but I said I did exactly what their cs rep had told me to do. Different cs reps would say different things as well, wait till x date, "case is closed you need to send right item in", we are investigating, "we can't do anything" etc. I started proceedings with my CC after about 3 weeks and got an instant refund, But also an email saying "my returns weren't in line with Forrest policy" and threatened my account (they are roughly 10% returns IIRC, 20+ year old account).

After this experience, you can understand why I'm hesitant to go through it again with this Trio. I have spoken to them this morning, and even linked to this thread, and they insist it is sold directly from them so no issues (as I presume OPs is and my SSDs were) and they will pass on feedback.

Ultimately I get the impression all customer service is outsourced to a foreign country, with no real powers and multiple people who just want rid of you. All thy can offer is platitudes. I'll be filming opening my Trio next week for sure.
 
Wow, that is next level. Was this sold by the direct by retailer or a marketplace seller?
Gamers Nexus would probably take it off your hands and do a news piece on it.

The good news is I got my refund from the initial retailer that I paid £2850 a few days back for the Gaming Trio so i have money back on my credit card, now I just need to return the fake/scam Gaming Trio back to *competitor removed* and fingers crossed they process the refund without any issues.

However the cracking news is I just took my phone out of my pocket randomly to watch a Youtube video and the Hotstock app pinged me that the FE 5090 was available. I didn't believe it because in the past by the time I would always click by the time I would get redirected to the Nvidia site it would always show the FE as out of stock.

Not this time though. This time the damned thing got added to my basket and I checked out.

So not only am I overjoyed that I got the actual model I always wanted and so happy after all the stress yesterday but I actually paid £1849 which is less than the initial launch price thanks to Mr Trump and his tarrifs.

I'm so happy . Thanks to you all for your kind words yesterday, I was not in a good place yesterday.

People do this with motorcycle helmets as well. They order an identical helmet from *competitor removed*, then swap their used helmet for the brand new one, put the package back together and refund it.

They don't know. In their mind, it's a brand new item with package opened. In many cases Amazon sellers just resell it as brand new and hope whoever buys it will not mind broken seal or partially ripped box.

Pretty sure a retailer can't sell a item that has been shipped out to a customer and returned as brand new, even if it apparantly looks unopened?

It would be b grade or "used like new" etc.

The reason this happens is because *competitor removed* are so good with returns. It's pretty dumb imo to then swear off purchasing from them. No hassle, FREE returns is absolutely worth the tiny chance of something like this happening. If you get a GPU with lots of coil whine, have fun sorting that with other retailers who will want to 'test' the card, at which point they may decide it's fine and you have to suck up paying return postage - which for an expensive GPU is AT LEAST £20 insured.

Amazon can also be scammed through poisoning of the supply of fungible "fulfilled by amazon" items which probably includes things sold by .co.uk items too. It's detailed at 15:50 in this video

They shouldn't, but they can and they do.

Is the reason why I avoid some shops and brands (because they don't seal their boxes). Pre-orders are usually safe, but buying something that has been out for a long time (especially with computers, like motherboards) getting a used item has a higher probability.

The "its your money you can do what you want" argument in this case is a bit thin when it comes down to common sense. So agree with others its not MSI's fault its the holes in Amazon's security/returns procedure. The buy a GPU and receive a load of Lead has been widely spoken about on here. Even when it says Sold by A on it you cant trust it. This is a case in example. At least OP got the card they wanted but its a lesson to all!

Nice, make sure you follow this guide to undervolt it when it arrives. It will give a performance boost and limits it to 450w :)

Not buying from a retailer with easily the best returns experience because a tiny percentage of people got scammed is not common sense. Especially on a forum where no one here is stupid enough to not spot a fake item.

What kind of extra protections does a credit card offer?

I did a successful chargeback recently with a debit card.
Credit cards as finance products legally have to give S75 protection. The charge back protection offered on debit cards is more of a goodwill gesture from the card issuer AFAIK.
