I won't link to it due to the language used but Mark Clattenburg was on the Overlap Fan Debate. I always thought he was an absolute helmet but he comes across 10x worse than even I thought. It was like listening to Jay from the Inbetweeners with the stories he was coming out with.
Agreed though, the bits where he tries to act the hard man e.g. with Lallana and Klopp just come across as bull****, you can just tell he's not the guy he's trying to portray.

I too listened to that, the bit that I thought was stupid/annoying was he kept saying he was employed as an adviser for everything related to football and when questioned further on it everything from players, to tactics, etc
It was like he was trying to come across as the oracle.
I mean, this isn't news. Having played a lot of different team sports in my life, being a referee/umpire is a **** job and either people don't want to do it or they love the power they have over people they wouldn't normally have any sway over. Imagine being the guy who gets to potentially decide title races etc. This is a broad generalisation but most of the people I knew who were keen to take it seriously were a certain type. Nothing wrong with them but a certain type.

Quite interesting. Seems Man City have indeed grown massively in their worldwide following since their rise to the top. How much of that can be verified is up for debate but its interesting that they are 2nd in the social media following rankings.
I do sort of agree with that, but I can imagine a lot of people get into refereeing, similar to getting into coaching. At the bottom of the pyramid, it's all about facilitating young kids to play and enjoy football and with no coaches and no referees, there's no game (beyond a random kick-about in the playground / park). So most coaches/referees are usually parents just trying to support their kids.
But why certain people stick with it beyond that, I guess does require a certain ego/mindset, because (as you say), it's generally a **** job in terms of the abuse/hassle.
Its a **** job at every level, the pay is awful, you end up going all over the country if you want to do it at the higher levels so it becomes just as serious as playing at that level almost and the pay never really comes close to being worth it until you are at the very very very top level. Think the PL refs get something like £200k/year. Thats a very good salary but considering how few of them they are and a bit of class A drug use and being mean to the scousers can finish your career, who wants that?

they do say that income is a part of the ranking and it seems they are using Man City's artificially inflated income figures
