They are notoriously bad engines. Injector seals fail, fill the oil with sooty gunk, block the oil strainer, kills the turbo, timing chain, big end bearings etc. Inlet manifolds block up with carbon causing issues. Vacuum pumps fail taking out cam bearings. Failed dpf regens fill the oil with diesel and kill the engine. Turbo diverter valves fail and take out the turbo in the process. Oil pump chain known to snap.
Not scaremongering, they're genuinely a **** engine. I would take an Ecoboost all day long over them, at least with the Ecoboost you can change the wet belt and have few other issues.
My only advice would be to have the injector seals done and keep up with regular oil changes using quality oil.
