*** The Official Nintendo Switch 2 ***

Reeks of greed especially in these economic times. I'm sitting this one out and hoping most of the casual market do the same so that they eventually drop prices.

100% fleecing people.

Japanese only region locked console (to stop people outside buying it) is the equivalent of £259. Rest of the world is being fleeced, either it could be much cheaper or rest of the world is being pumped to subsidise Japan.

People seem to have forgotten what happened to the 3DS.

Do you think their core casual audience will pay that amount of money for Mario Kart when they've already got 8? The prices are just too much to stomach, especially in this economy. When they're making you pay for a tech demo you know they've gone full greed and need a reality check.

Isn't Mario Kart 8 like the biggest selling game on the Switch? Surely logic suggests releasing a new version of said best selling game with the new hardware would be the best option?

In short yes. However obviously nothing is guaranteed as Nintendo was hugely successful with the original Switch.

Interesting article over at Eurogamer which has just been published with the cost in real terms of the Switch 2017 launch vs. this upcoming Switch 2 launch. In the UK the Switch 2 is cheaper in real term when inflation is accounted for. I haven't checked their maths, but I suspect that probably holds true. Slightly different in other regions and the US could be very unpredictable with everything going on. I think games is where the bigger criticism of price increases has been and something this article picks up on, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of that is pressure from the large publishers (i.e. Borderlands 4 'ultimate' edition is likely going to be £100-120 game, or near to on Steam, PSN and Xbox).

Given that Mario Kart 8 sold nearly 65 million copies to date and is one of the best selling games, or series or all time I imagine there is huge demand for that game alone. My own worry is more how Nintendo may aim to increase monetisation. Something historically they have been nowhere near as greedy as other game makers. But increase in services, live service people play and expect plus the goldmine that is selling games on their digital platform, who knows.

If I was to preorder one it would be to play switch 1 games, no interest in mario kart as I have 8.
Do we know if we can play all switch 1 games?

US site is here: https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer-guide/compatible-games/

Digital Foundry mentioned in their video there are a lot of games showing with 'start-up' issues, way more than they would like. Particularly as this is only the games tested so far. Could be something to keep an eye on.

No, because the core casual audience don't typically care to buy the same thing again. It is only enthusiasts who do that. The same story happened with the Wii. What made the Switch accessible was the low price to entry, which no longer exists.

The original Switch was successful because it was a pretty new and unique device that was cheap compared to competition. Things get much more difficult when you have to convince the same people to buy a vastly more expensive iteration of the same thing, especially when it's the same damn price as a PS5 for the enthusiasts.

The inflation argument is often tossed around, but nobody in the real world cares about that because wages haven't kept up with inflation and everything is so much more expensive now that the budget for luxuries has collapsed compared to pre pandemic.

Nintendo is already full on greed this generation. Increase console price, increased game price (more for physical), paying for a tech demo. Amiibo prices going up. The NSO GameCube controller is £60!!!.

I pre-ordered one from Smyths but fancy myself to cancel honestly. The prices of the games just seem insane. Not that there are actually any games that I'm interested in lol.

Another batch at Argos a few mins ago. Managed to get one. Tried various times with my account, but ended up checking out as a guest as it kept failing to log in.

Need to get another one for kid no.2!

It's not the same thing though? It's a new game :D

Splatoon 1 & 2 being an example, They're near enough the same game yet 2 sold nearly 3x as many?

Yes but some don't work, check the Nintendo blacklist, nearly 200 games that don't work on switch 2

DK isn't a system seller, MK has proven to be. DK will be a good momentum title, something meaty to get a month after the launch of the system.
But you'd think people who'd buy the system are more likely to already have a switch, and 8. It has tons of courses too. More of the same just feels rather underwhelming for a launch.

I don't think you can understand the casual mindset then.

Splatoon 1 was sold on an old system that tanked. Splatoon 2 got far more exposure due to being on the Switch. Of course it sold more?

Good news about the pro controller I don’t care about back paddles so I’ll stick with the one I have. I’ll just grab the console on its own and pick up a game later. Digital more than likely.

I mostly play handheld anyway.

The Cyclone 2 or 8BitDo works perfectly on the Switch, there is no need to get the official one.

Both have back paddles, so you are paying like £50 for that C button.
