They're so reactive to everything, why pit both drivers within a lap of each other and just follow Max for 53 laps?
Well, they probably thought they haven't been able to catch thus far so overcutting or undercutting might give them a shot - so obviously the only choice is to instead do nothing with both cars and follow Max home.

Great old school circuit but god that was boring....

McLaren should have at least let Oscar have a go at Verstappen with 8/9 laps in the race to go, then swap them back if he didn't get him.... Otherwise just dull dull dull race.

Bit of a boring race really, great control from Max throughout but also highlights how sloppy McLaren are from a strategy side. They're so reactive to everything, why pit both drivers within a lap of each other and just follow Max for 53 laps?

Their strategy was about 0.1s away from Norris leaving the pits in the lead. Also, I expect they didn't want to explain to Lando why Piastri got ahead of him during the stops.

Thought Antonelli was impressive once again, his lap times on the old medium at the end of the first stint were really consistent and pretty quick too.

Yeah, he hasn't had any dramatically impressive performances yet, but he's been quietly solid. Good work for one so young and inexperienced.

Suzuka does this. We all think of how good a track it is....to drive. It just never really allows overtaking and on track battles in F1. I think Monaco could be more exciting! Glad I didn't get up for it.

Just finished watching that (away this weekend and had to find it online... although forgot about Villeneuve; should have sourced the F1TV recording...) - pretty dull race for how close it was at the front - great win for Max though, he's hauled that car beyond where it should be on Sat and Sun this weekend.

Some good drives through the grid though - Antonelli and Hamilton lasted for ages on those Medium and Hards, Hadjar is looking pretty decent in the RB and Bearman is making Ocon look pretty average at this point.

Tough first race for Tsunoda at RB after his poor qualifying yesterday; clearly there was overtaking to be done as Albon seemed to be overtaking everything but we'll see how Tsunoda fares at Bahrain I guess.

I just finished watching the “highlights”. Dull as.

McLaren threw that away, they should have either split strategy or let each one have a go at Max. Lando should have been told he’s got 3 laps to get the move done or Piastri is going past. That’s the only way to do it. Someone needs to remind them that first and third is better than second and third.

A few laps of attacking Max would hurt his tyres and thus the other guy will likely get the move done. Simple.

It seems likely this scenario might happen again, let’s hope they learn.

Bearman is making Ocon look pretty average at this point.

Classic Ocon, isn't it? Follows up a superb fifth position in China with a thoroughly underwhelming showing here. Ocon has talent, and takes opportunities when they're there, but he totally lacks consistency... and sure does love to drive into his teammates.

Jeez that was bad. I was bored watching it at 12x speed. Should be a new poll for who is worse, Norris or Villeneuve.
After 5 minutes of the highlights we were moaning about Villeneuve, but actually he gave some good factoids I didn’t know. I can’t remember others, but like a higher downforce car requiring more fuel for example. There were a couple where we were like “oh that’s actually interesting”. He is a terrible commentator though and needs to stop talking over people :p

So nothing to do with a tyre strategy that didn't work because there was no safety car?
