What have you done to your car today?

Made a small mod last week which has made a pleasing improvement. One of the few areas where most said the GR86 didn't improve over the previous model was the steering - criticised for lacking a bit of feel and being lighter than the earlier car. I figured it was just down to tyres and alignment, but have noticed that the car does feel a little vague just off centre. Not horribly so, but enough that sometimes I felt I didn't have quite the confidence in the front end that I did in the old car. New tyres helped, as did a proper alignment, but it was still not quite right.

Last week, after some research, I fitted STI extended steering rack bolts. Doesn't sound like changing some mounting bolts would make a difference, until you see them. The steering rack was bolted to the subframe by some chunky bolts which thread through a rubber bushing; but they were relatively short, only threading maybe 25mm or so into the subframe. The STI bolts instead thread all the way through the subframe, and come supplied with a spacer and nut so that it clamps the frame from the other side. I also bought harder STI bushes; however wasn't able to fit them; they have a rubber lip and I could not for the life of me work out how to press it into the rack without it being torn off. I abandoned them, and went back a couple of days later to install Whiteline poly bushes instead as they are a two-part design which is much easier to install.

Despite being a pretty minor change, I'm glad to say there's been a marginal, but noticeable, improvement. The vagueness just off centre is gone, and although I wouldn't say I can feel much more through the wheel in terms of road texture, I can feel that the car seems to respond to tiny inputs much more willingly. Feels much nicer threading it through a corner, especially if I have to make tiny corrections, much more like the GT86.

It's also made the car nicer to drive on the motorway. I now find that I can cruise supporting the wheel with one hand more comfortably; it seems to take less movement from my wrist and fingers to keep the car straight, so little that it's almost subconscious. Before, the slight vagueness around dead centre meant that I'd find myself driving with two hands on the wheel all the time, as larger input was needed for small corrections. Very pleased with the results :)

*Finally* replaced the struts on the split glass in the boot on my Sportage. It's been broken since i bought it and never stayed open which meant it shuts on your head and you need 3 arms to load anything into it.

Was never a huge issue, but now the boot itself is broken so it's my only way of getting into the back of the car!

Daughters Fiat 500 was overheating. It had low coolant but no signs of it mixing with anything else or any leaks. Seeing as I was draining it and that the thermostats are a weak point I decided to stick a new one on. To get to it you need to remove the battery. Of course, the battery tie down stud and nut were the rustiest things on earth and I snapped it. I ended up badly drilling it out and using a bolt & half nut as a replacement stud. I also ripped my arms to shreds on all the rough metal around the engine bay. At least now she can pointlessly sit in the car with it idling doing lord knows what without worry.

I also changed the battery on my mums CR-V. I managed to touch the slam panel with my ratchet when doing up the positive terminal which made me jump. Despite the huge shower of sparks and welding a bit of the slam panel onto my ratchet, nothing else was broken :D

I sometimes wonder if it's worth the bloodshed for such simple tasks!

That time again....

It's not what I've done to my car, rather what some utter muppet has done to my Dad's cars... (sorry crap footage but you get the idea)

Absolute **** in a Transporter smashes into the back of the ZT which then pushes into the Rover 800, who then ***** off never to be seen again.

While trying to flee the scene he clips the back of a neighbouring car and we have dashcam footage of him nearly plouging into another further down the road. Got some cracking footage of the van from the local shop with clear pictures of the driver and reg plate, so this is now with the police... although we're still waiting for them to respond.

Not entirely sure whether drink or drugs were involved which is why I was hoping they would get onto it ASAP, especially with multiple reports coming in but it seems that horse has bolted.

ZT is utterly goosed, bent rear quarter and the drivers rear door won't open. The Rover needs a bumper, bonnet, crash bar, radiator, oil cooler and slam panel. The kicker being that my Dad replaced most of the front end only a few years ago.

A real shame about the ZT but it went out in high regard by saving the Rover from being a total loss. It looks as though the ZT had one last fight and sent its towbar through the radiator of the van, to which I am incredibly happy about.

Be careful folks, there are some utter cretins that walk amongst us.

That's so annoying :(

You can say that again!

I get that there is little love for old Rovers and MGs but it is absolutely sickening that you can spend a lot of time and money to keep an old car on the road, only for it to wiped out in seconds because of some selfish moron. Fair enough if he'd hung around to apologise and exchange details. We all make mistakes, have a lapse in concentration etc. People who leave the scene of an incident are scum.

so whats the plastic parallelogram thingy with bits/orange bag ... on top .... not some kind of car support/axle stand thing for stability on gravel
(google search is giving me a matrix adjustable basketball hoop)
The bag is for the locking wheel nut key according to the writing and the orange tool looks like a pry bar or trim removal tool

Exchanged it
