18+ Steam game in the news…

Apparently, there’s a game on Steam called “no mercy” that the UK government are trying to get removed.

Andrew Tate has a game division now? I saw this review:

I put a few hours into this game to give it due diligence and this is my perspective: This is the most depraved game I think I have ever personally played. The entire game is about grooming people you should care about to do sexual favors for you. The entire game is about mental and physical rape. While the scenes are nicely done for the most part, having no option to play a "nice guy" or a "good guy" is not right. There are only a couple of scenarios where you actually build feelings with the character in question. The rest is just brutal mind games and rape. I would ask for a refund but I went over the hours mark to be able to do so.

Why is this any more deserving of a ban than literally any FPS game?
I imagine because in the UK it is much harder to gain access to a weapon.

Where as everyone and anyone can use the tactics in this game to abuse women. Plus anything that is advocating rape is not ideal, thought that would go without saying.
Forgot to add, maybe with the rise in sexual violence in this country, this is not the best type of game to put out there.

Well it’s not that difficult to get a firearms license. You just fill in the forms online. Ive had my firearms license for 6 years and possess 2x shotguns. I use them to shoot clay and game. I’ve never had the urge to kill anyone though. :)

You're probably overwhelmingly British too right?

Great you've never had the urge, but I am afraid you alone cannot be used to make a measure for everyone else.

Well I’m Norfolk born and bred, so yes I am British. But I don’t see what that has to do with anything.

English name and from Norfolk, probably got a gun cabinet and more already yeah? No wonder it only took a couple weeks.
Try it using a not so English name, that'll give you an idea of the reality. What I am trying to say, is that the process and its difficulties depend on the person, its not a 6 week process for everyone.

This is a game glorifying rape. Are you sure you want to be defending this?

So where are the calls for outright censorship of anything portraying rape in other media? Plenty of TV Shows and movies where it's been shown

I'm not advocating rape, or defending this game, but it's just another bit of knee jerk censorship / banning, because of a minority. The sad thing with all these bans and censorship is that the people they are designed to effect, won't be impacted in the slightest.

I already said in post 4 that I think the game should be banned. I’m talking about comparing FPS games to shooting someone in real life.

Interesting one... I suspect that anyone this game appeals to probably already has a few issues which need dealing with.

Not sure how I feel about it to be honest - on one hand, yes maybe it's "glorifying" rape/abuse of women. On the other hand maybe it allows someone with those tendencies to play out their fantasies in a "safe" way without actually hurting anyone? I don't know, I'm not a psychologist!

While I don't necessarily think it should be banned - ultimately it's a fictional piece of "art", and while I find it distasteful, unless it's breaking any laws then that's not a valid reason - the article does bring up a good point about how easy it is for children to access "adult" themed games without any age verification though.

I guess the difference is that when you're shooting someone in an FPS game, they're usually a "bad guy". Sure there are some games where that's not the case (e.g. GTA being the obvious example), but those tend to cause plenty of controversy themselves!

So where are the calls for outright censorship of anything portraying rape in other media? Plenty of TV Shows and movies where it's been shown

Almost* exclusively from the point of view of it being a "bad thing". The difference here being that it's encouraged and basically the whole point of the game.

* I say "almost" because while I'm struggling to think of a single example in TV/movies which make out rape to be a good thing and encourage it, I'm sure some smart**** will come along with a "well ackshually!"

The point is we have games which "glorify" other things which are against the law and morally wrong. Stealing cars, playing the part of gangsters/dealers/pimps. Shooting people. What about the Call of Duty level "No Russian" I think it was called? Where you walk around an airport shooting innocent people. There are horror/torture games. I think it's an interesting debate to see a selective ban of a game featuring players breaking one law, but allowing games with others.

Big difference in showing the impacts of rape and how it affects people.
To a game that glorifies and teaches someone on how to abuse and rape women.

As from this article - https://thewhitehatter.ca/blog/when...about-the-no-mercy-game-controversy-on-steam/

"The game promoted deeply misogynistic themes, encouraging men to “own” and “subdue” women. In the game’s storyline, rape and humiliation were presented as justified punishments for women who were “disobedient,” and disturbingly, it framed women as secretly desiring this abuse."

The sad thing with all these bans and censorship is that the people they are designed to effect, won't be impacted in the slightest.
I dont disagree with that, but allowing it to be out there may influencing the view points of others, effecting the users of the game and potentially impacting women who could be assaulted by these influenced individuals.
IN a time where sexual violence is on the rise, this is really not the time to promote such a game.
The difference here being that it's encouraged and basically the whole point of the game.
This.

Okay made a mistake there. But still want to see you get your firearms license without a british name or move what additional hoops to jump through.
