Harry Potter HBO TV series

No idea how I missed this thread. For the talk about 7 books in 10 years, maybe they will explore the Snape younger days with his love for Lily before Harry goes to the Durselys.

Anyway, Olivia Colman needs to be in this. Until I saw the comment about Janet McTeer possibly taking McGonagall, Olivia would be ideal. Or even Olvia could play Umbridge.
I can definitely see Olivia as Umbridge.

He's a well described character that helps a younger audience immediately recognise him as an antagonist. As you say, it is a strong image.
It also plays to the 'don't judge a book by it's cover' theme towards the end of the series.

I think the films visually portrayed Snape as well as they could. They took what was on the page and made it real.

My issue with any changes to an author's work where character descriptions exist, is where do you draw the line? I can see why prosthetics weren't used for Snape on his nose and teeth to make it 100% book accurate. If they had done that he would have been less menacing and less real as a character in my opinion. In the book it was fine, but on screen he would have been a caricature.

So where do you draw the line?

You could remove the ginger from the Weasleys if you wanted to when adaptating the books. Them being ginger is no more important to the story than how Snape looks; it's only a visual cue. You could use a different one or some other characteristic that couldn't be used in books, like an accent or mannerism particular to the whole family.
But why would you?
How does the change you are making serve the story and help bring the characters to life on the screen?

It is one thing to adapt an appearance to bring it from the page to the screen in a realistic way, but it's another to unnecessarily erase the defining characteristics of a character.
Well said.

Good point about the weasleys

“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch,” said Francesca Gardiner, showrunner and executive producer, and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and executive producer. “We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”

Yep. So far it's an interesting option.
Can't place Luke Thallon face to anything I remember, but Janet McTeer I have seen in many things but having looked her IMDB page I can't recall watching any of the stuff she's been in lol. Bizarre lol
Nick Frost is a great casting for Hagrid though.
Edit: Luke is a stage actor thats why I cant recall seeing him in anything.
Edit 2: Argus Filch I just remembered was the Hogwarts caretaker bloke. Whitehouse will smash that role. It's like he was made for that character.

John Lithgow - not much wrong here but him being 79 seems a bit risky in terms of seeing out the entire series if it starts to drag on in terms of production
Janet McTeer - seems a solid choice
Paapa Essiedu - could work, he's not bad but arguably some of the biggest shoes to fill in terms of comparisons back to the films, so he'll need to be good
Nick Frost - this could either work really well (hopefully) or end up feeling like the character is 'Nick Frost Dressed as Hagrid'
Luke Thallon - no idea but Quirrell is obviously not a long term role anyway
Paul Whitehouse - good choice for Filch I think

Looking forward to the ratings dipping by mid season 3 and them starting to try and cast 'popular' actors like The Rock to play roles like Krum :p

Can't help thinking they decided on Nick Frost to play Hagrid in the very early stages of planning the series years ago, only for him to lose about 14 stone in the meantime. He'll have to wear a fat suit in this won't he?

Snape is not black, it clearly states so in the books. They're not going to make Kingsley white now are they?

RIP new series.
I saw the stage adaptation of the The Cursed Child in London some time ago and Hermoine was played by a black actress

I didn't find it jarring to be honest, they were never going to get Emma Watson on stage so it was always going to be somebody else performing it.

Weirdly, their skin colour didn't affect their performance. Imagine that.

Maybe they are planning on the new Harry being an arch BNP type and therefore reversing the HP/Snape antagonistic flow dynamic. Harry will eventually reveal he was pretending to be a BNP supporter all along and abusing Snape in order to infiltrate the reworked Death Eater organisation, which will be affiliated with a Muggle BNP, with Nigel Farage cast as both Voldemort and the leader of the Muggle BNP, as twin brothers.

I personally don't have an issue with it, I think it has some negative connotations on the storyline of the character. Until the Marauders are cast it's basically 4x white kids bullying the daylights out of the random black kid. Which is not what the whole story is about.

I would be interested to see peoples reactions on a well known black character being played by a white person though, I suspect the internet would lose their mind these days.
