Harry Potter HBO TV series

You can easily see The Deathly Hallows being 2 seasons in much the same way the book was 2 films.
But they definitely need to keep a season a year to keep the actors in lockstep with the characters they portray.

I'm a bit confused about the 10 years.

The whole point was that with a series they can fully bring to life the whole books to a say 8 hour series, rather than the abridged versions in the 2 hour movies.

Order of the Phoenix was the longest book (book 5). I really hope they don't stretch each of the final 3 books to 2 seasons each!

Anyway, IF they even manage to get beyond a 3rd season I will worry about it then!!!! I'm still really sceptical how a company that is cancelling/rebooting things like there's no tomorrow to commit to something that is a still a while away!

Didn't realise it was basically remaking the films into a TV series. Definitely feels too soon for that. Many of the actors are those characters so I can't really see some other kid playing Harry Potter or someone trying to follow up on Alan Rickman.
By the time this reaches our screens, the original movie would have aired 25 years ago. It might feel "too soon" but there's an entire generational difference now.

And the last would be 14 years. An entire generation grew up with the films, and their kids grew up with it too. Their faces are still plastered on merch, are the centre of rides at some of the most popular theme parks in the world with another set to open in 2025, the films are played year round on terrestrial telly. It would be like remaking Star Wars in 2000, it seems redundant unless it's near perfect.

Yeah it is definitely an issue. Hagrid is just so much Robbie Coltrane. Snape is Alan Rickman.

What do they do with merch? Have both actors as harry Potter on mugs and cups?

I wonder whether ‘a decade long series’ was just a colloquialism for saying ‘7 years long’.

I think putting those well known stories across a stretched TV series might end up being very tedious, if they’re not careful.

I imagine the JK Rowling will have to provide some additional guidance, particularly for the shorter books on what else was taking place during the academic year at Hogwarts. Equally the screenwriters are going to have to work hard to stretch out the scenes to give them emotional heft.

They have to get pretty much everything right so it's a huge gamble with the money that will be involved. As shown with LoTR, you can't just bank on the franchise carrying the show.

I bet the casting process alone is going to take more time and cost more money than any other show.

I don't think that 22 years is too soon from the 1st film to the 1st TV series. I will be interested how it can be made into 10 series though. Maybe do years 1-7, then focus on some sequels after the 7th year rather than the prequels / Fantastic Beasts.

Will this be on terrestrial TV or streaming only?

One things for sure, Harry Potter is one hell of a cash cow, books, films, games and now a tv show.
Indeed, but I cans we why. The merch alone is very sellable.

I was in florida last year, and the amount of people walking around in robes, buying 80 dollar wands, buying butter bear, it was unbelievable how much money they were taking in every minute.

No one will ever hold a candle to Alan Rickman

Doesnt matter who they picked tbh it would have been the incorrect choice.

Still it is a good shout when you think about it, A proper theatre kid with exceptional range. Everyone crying that hes wont be able to pull off a mean wizard are living in the clouds and/or just plain racist.

You could say that

Highest grossing film of 2001 : Philosophers stone
Highest grossing film of 2005 : Goblet of fire
Highest grossing film of 2011 : Deathly Hallows part 2
