Its National Trust land so cant see how a building firm would benefit.
Its the sort of spiteful mindless vandalism that ****** up teenagers think is funny.
Couple of idiots who at their age should have grown up but obviously didnt.
Whilst I agree prison time is just a waste of money I do assume/hope that they have lost their jobs/business over this.
Can't fault them for the quality of their Team Fortress 2 Cosplay though.

I don't really empathise with the owner at all. The land in front is a non-arable field, not their front garden, so what if people walk on it. Also it is actually access land (pale yellow on the OS 1:25k maps https://www.bing.com/maps?&cp=55.001292~-2.373711&lvl=17.433928&style=s&pi=0&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027 ) so people aren't even trespassing if they step off the public footpath to get a better look at the ex-sycamore gap.The land in front is privately owned. I can empathise with the owner to some extent as it does frequently get trespassed upon and I know he has problems with people parking there too as it's a 20 min walk from the NT car park.

If people drive up a private track and block it or whatever then I can see that being more of an issue but I have to wonder how frequently that actually happens and how much of an issue it actually is...
That presumably means people leaving a gate open or something, which is a different problem to 'trespass' - but agree it is bad if visitors don't shut gates etc. At the end of the day though if you're farming in front of one of the most famous monuments in the country but hate seeing people walking on your land then maybe it's time to sell up and get a farm somewhere less popular. It's pasture. There are frequently sheep in there. In the past people have caused them to escape.
Also a video found on phone. The evidence being presented just looks like they wanted to be found and prosecuted. Or just thick.
What sort of sentence are they likely to get? Prison seems a bit unnecessary. Maybe they should be forced to plant 1000 trees each.

I've heard that the prison code of honour takes a particular issue with tree vandalism. The sentencing guidelines are here. I think due to the value, their behaviour, and the cherished nature of the destruction they'll probably get towards the higher end of available options. My guess - and it is a guess - is that they'll be sentenced to eighteen months and end up serving 9-12 months inside.
For cutting a tree down? Really?Just thick, they have mode A LOT of enemies who wont forget what they did
I'd rather hug a tree than a lot of humans. For cutting a tree down? Really?
There are literally people who've killed others with cars getting barely a slap on the wrist and I'm supposed to be particularly aggrieved over a bit of wood? The most they should be dealt with is some severe community service since that is what they intended on harming.

Hadrians Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Let alone the tree. If it was upto me id give them the full prison term, but we probably dont have the prison space so....Didnt they do £7500 worth of damage to a wall, they should pay that in full and all other associated costs which were probably in the many thousands.
They should at the very minimum pay for every last penny of what they did and have a criminal record for life.
