Would you warn oncoming drivers of a mobile speed camera?

Horses, tractors, large roadkill, stopped vehicles etc. is all good, those are things that might need a driver to slow down beyond a 'normal' safe speed to avoid an active hazard, unusual situation etc. that is made demonstrably safer by reducing speed and being extra observant. I expect almost everyone flashes to warn people of things like this.

Speed cameras aren't the same though in my opinion, they're not an active hazard, they're not in the road, they don't require any action out of the ordinary, so nobody needs to be warned about them being there really. The same way I wouldn't flash people to tell them there are traffic lights further down the road or something - it doesn't require any unusual action, so no need to warn people of it.

For me it's just being friendly and your previous argument is very valid about letting them learn from their mistake. But I guess it's just a reflex for me to do it regardless. I'm not suggesting I'm right or better or righteous it's just for me something I feel inclined to do.

I don't like crazy speeders. It's all the decent folk who get caught doing 3/4/5 mph over the limit which ain't fair. Normally coming down a hill on a road which should be a 40.

Yep always a spot most likely to catch people out, rather than act as a deterrent.

No one is playing in the road behind a bend, coming from a NSL stretch. If they are, they are still getting hit before the driver sees the camera so it's really preventing nothing. Surely they need to be before the corner, but they never are because drivers would see it and it wouldn't make money that way...

Isn't the potential to be 'caught out' the deterrent?

It's a bit late once someone has yeeted around a corner at 60 in to a 30 and hit something. Great, they got a photo of a speeder running someone over, when they could have been on the other side of the corner and prevented it.

There is no deterrent if they are doing their best to hide.

The point is that people should be deterred from speeding *all the time* rather than just in specific locations.

You're suggesting that cameras are required everywhere to prevent people driving at double the speed limit in urban areas? Genuinely idiotic.

Whilst you can question the morality of warning someone of an upcoming speed trap, I can also question the morality and motivation for the placement of some of the mobile speed cameras I see regularly. So as usual, this isn't a black or white issue.... It's a million shades of grey.

It's good to see though that we have people that stick religiously to the speed limit at all times and don't enjoy a spirited drive any more. :)

Problem is these stats always have a lot of spin on them. Visitors to Wales also dropped as no one wants to roll around the countryside at 20mph, it's annoying.
Very few drive at 20. I'd say 1 in 10.
Its incredibly annoying when you get behind someone doing it.

Once you've seen a child killed by a speeding car your attitude changes somewhat.

Yes or having children you tend to speed less. That going fast in towns and cities is stupid and there's no excuse. It goes back to my point that I'd rather urge someone to slow down to hopefully make them think or be more careful on the road. I think though it depends on where you live. Countryside living with small B roads is different to cities as it is to people that live or use dual carriageway often.

There's a time and place for everything in life. People wouldn't buy fast cars if they didn't enjoy their power, which of course doesn't mean you have to break the speed limit or drive poorly but a dose of reality is needed. People enjoy spirited drives from time to time and a reminder they may be overdoing it is more helpful than not in the grand scheme of things from my perspective.
