Your bad driving encounters/irritations

Saw a great example yesterday with a car pulling over, the Fiat Panda behind weaves around them and was still mid 'hand in the air - "what are you doing"' to the other driver as the ambulance (which was the reason the first car pulled over) nearly rear ends them with their blues on. Totally oblivious.

Always reminds me of the one a couple of years back or so when an ambulance fully lit up joined the end of the queue at traffic lights just as the lights changed and a bunch of us noticed and held position while several people's immediate! reaction was to pull out into the other side of the road to go around people who were stopped before noticing the ambulance and then having to awkwardly get out the way.

Had it numerous times with the bus. Stop and/or move out of the way for emergency services and some muppet tries to go around me and into the path of said emergency vehicle.

Talking Emergency Vehicles - I see people are finally starting to switch on when in a multi lane carriageway and slow moving traffic. Instead of everyone trying to dive into a single lane, the left lane moves left and the right lane moves right, opening up a new "lane" right up the middle which the EV can then go up. Its how they do it in Germany etc.

This has a couple of benefits:
  1. The lane for the EV clears quicker as everyone can move over in their own lane almost immediately without waiting for a gap so the EV can make progress much quicker
  2. It helps prevent instances of drivers being ***** and drafting behind the EV as the other cars can move back over immediately after EV passes (wont stop every one but helps lower the instances)

Some absolute ****** at work has hit my car and of course, they've not left a note or left a message with reception.

I have one of those dashcams that you got by replacing the shroud around the rear view mirror, powered by connecting to the electronics in that area.

The app for the dashcams has three areas: Loop where it saves 1min clips as you drive, parked which I assume is for recordings when the gyroscope is activated and locked. Locked I'm not clear on but seems to save the first 1 min clip after engine starts and last 1 min clip when engine is turned off.

However, it saved a random clip of a Honda Civic parking next to me about 40 mins after I left the car. So I think this car may have hit me and started the recording, but I only see the aftermath which is them having a second attempt at reverse parking next to me. So not quite clear cut but strange they're the only clip I've seen in this locked folder where it's not me either starting or ending my journey.

I just hope the CCTV at work picks up me being hit.

Just an update to this, my dash cam had picked up the aftermath so it was easy for security to go straight to the incident. Yet the whole situation from them reversing into me to their attitude has been rather silly.

Firstly, after I sent an email to reception to ask them and security to review the CCTV, our receptionist came up and basically said a colleague (we'll call him Dave) parked next to me on Monday and randomly enquired who the Alfa Romeo belonged to which she told him it was mine, but he didn't state why he was asking. I actually ended up speaking to Dave mid-morning, and he didn't say a thing.

The CCTV showed some pretty poor driving. Dave arrived and was aiming to park next to my car, not sure why, it's a Monday and only a handful of people are in the office so there's literally over 100 empty space to choose. The approach angle to reverse wasn't the best anyway but part way through reversing he sticks his head out his window, looking down to find the parking space line that his offside wheel needs to be within. However, he has clearly become confused because the line he's aiming to be within is the line of the parking space I'm in and because his head is constantly looking out of his window, he's not looking in his rear view to see my car already there. He's essentially trying to park in the space I'm already in!!!

You're probably thinking, surely he can see your car even out of the window but the space I'm in is next to the building, it's wide and I park as close to the building as I can because I like my car dent free if possible so I'm not close to the lines. So it's not a glancing blow, but a full on shunt into my car and the CCTV (no sound) shows my car move considerably. He take two more attempts to park next to me, gets out, goes straight to the back of his car to check the damage and glances at the front of mind as he walks past.

He claims he was sure he didn't hit me (he's not aware we have CCTV of it), but left his details with reception "because he would hate to think someone would walk away in that situation and not leave details". Now, reception are clear he only asked about who the AR belonged to, didn't mention hitting it and certainly didn't leave details. He's ended up being rather silly because he doesn't want to admit he wasn't going to fess up, as a result he's got to play the ignorant to the fact he hit me card, despite knowing he checked the damage out and there's no way you wouldn't have felt or heard the hit.

I've kept and will keep it civil so I don't think there's any value of calling him out and saying the CCTV shows you knew you hit me. I have his insurance details.

The issue with that is that not all ML carriageways have the space to do that. There are several that I drive regularly where a normal bi-directional road (1 lane in either direction) has been made into 3 lane carriageway bi-direction road plus one way bus lane.

Bus lane is dotted with cameras and the lanes are barely wide enough for a car. Infrastructure done on the cheap.

Time for a Victor Meldrew rant. Yesterday's events
Coming off a roundabout in town to be faced with the impatient driver who pulls out from traffic to get to the right hand lane. I didn't pull over quite as fast as he would have liked and he shouts at me to get on my side of the road, whilst he's straddling the central white line.
I was second in line at a left and right set of traffic lights with a Merc in front of me indicating right in the right hand lane. Lights go green and they suddenly are going over to the left lane while still indicating right.
Walking the dog last night off lead and had an electric go by me without slowing down an further up the path making three lads to move over because they did not slow down for them either. This all happened next to a cycle lane on the main road.
Today walking the dog had a guy on a Voi scooter coming directly at me had no intention of slowing down, so I was again slow to get out of his way and indicated for him to slow down. His response was basically what have I done. Oh did I mention the path runs infront of an infant and primary school car and pedestrian entrance that has limited views in or out.
Rant over

I think there is value in being straight to the point, assuming you can secure a copy of said CCTV. "Listen here Stevie Wonder, you might not have seen it but I did, on the CCTV" :D

Got stuck behind a young woman earlier who sat in the outside lane of a dual carriageway at 60mph in a 70mph limit for 3.5 miles because she eventually wanted to turn right. There were hardly any cars on the road as it was the middle of the day on a Thursday. She resolutely refused to move left.

Then later I nearly got ploughed into by an old woman at a roundabout because she wanted to skip a queue but didn't bother actually looking to her right. On a roundabout no less. TBF on this one the road layout is absolute garbage in rush hour and I had a feeling she would do it.

Couple of places I find people do this a lot, usually old people sitting there resolutely at 40 in a 60/70 despite their turning being over a mile away, at least not as bad as the older people who sit in lane 1 at 40 and then when approaching their turn off just pull into lane 2 even if someone is coming up at 70 (or even faster) in lane 2 - one of the 2 instances I've had so far where I was thankful for forward collision assist as it would have been touch and go whether my reactions were quick enough to avoid making contact.

Sadly not something you can avoid with anticipation, etc.

Moving at 60 mph isn't exactly 'stuck' :)

However you have my sympathies for the 30 seconds of your life you'll never get back.

I didn't suggest anything of the sort, of course she was in the wrong. Just thought your choice of language might be an indication of how people subconsciously regard the effects of being slightly delayed.

I do wish people would have more consideration for others in these situations - for example often when I'm driving home at night if I've done a long shift at work I'm doing more like 50 in 60s that are fine to do 60 in but if someone comes up behind me I'll get a move on until they can safely pass or we go different ways.

What an absolute twit, this bit just goes to show some people should not be allowed to hold a licence.. Good job you got it on camera, but not the sort of hassle you need is it.... Hope its a relatively straightforward resolution.

This is so backwards. No one should ever feel obliged to speed up just because someone behind wants to drive faster.

Backwards in what way? everyone should be driving to a reasonable speed for conditions and limit (one of the first things you are taught when learning to drive and while not explicitly spelled out in the highway code is the direction of the guidance), sure there are some considerations i.e. vehicles with lower speed limits, towing and sometimes you might have an unavoidable mechanical issue and be on the way to the garage or whatever, but dawdling along significantly below the limit just because you feel like it isn't considerate.

I strongly suspect your threshold for what constitutes 'reasonable speed' is unrealistically high. You're also frequently moaning about other drivers not 'getting going', which suggests a certain amount of impatience even if if doesn't directly affect your actions.

I drive vehicles a lot which are restricted to van limits and happy to abide by them so personally don't think my expectations are unreasonable, though I do like to get going and up to speed pretty briskly (which is actually what you are taught to do) and do have a low tolerance for people who dawdle but I don't expect everyone to get going as quickly as I do.

80s Defender today. Guy revving it so high that everyone behind was emerging out of a Dark Cloud. This would put Diesel Locomotives to shame. A bit hypocritical post here from someone who drives a 15 year old Diesel Mondeo, but, buuttt this appeared to be as if the guy was doing deliberately at every traffic light and roundabout.

The rear windshield had a sticker saying "Agri Spec". Also had a non functioning beacon on the roof.
