Road Cycling

I know a few people around your weight who are very good climbers. I had the obvious thought that even though I put a lot of miles in, some long distances, I'm still not a 'GC' type, I'll probably always be a sprinter and I guess it can apply as a GC types too, even if you're a bit heavier. If you are predominantly slow twitch, etc. then you can still climb well. Yes, weight plays a part, but also your 'type' is very important.
At 80Kg, putting out ~320W for ~20mins is achievable for middle aged amateurs in good shape.

~390W at 95-100Kg for ~20mins as a middle aged amateur? That's pushing things more than a bit IMO.

I wouldn't say I'm a good climbing but I am not bad. Average you might say. Its just a shock to the system when you go abroad and realise that sometimes hills go on for 20km, not 3!

I enjoy hills as well. Theres something very satisfying about them and there are few things as good as getting to the top of a massively long climb and realising you have a huge, fast decent ahead of you. Conversely, I was in Tenerife and did a massive long climb with the anticipation of a banging downhill the other side only to find that it was steep and full of tight switchbacks on a less than perfect road surface. Crawled down it on my brakes 90% of the time.

At any rate, I might try and get a ticket for the 312 in the next couple of years if I manage to keep/improve my fitness with all of lifes other obligations.

Maybe we need an OCUK holiday where we do the route outside of cut offs :p

I think there is something special about these closed route events but I imagine that its a bit of carnage with 8000 or so people all doing the same route. @AndyCr15 how much does the mass start slow you down? What was your view on the whole event. Food stops. Vibes etc.

I recall Andy saying the start was fairly brutal (his understanding before doing the event) where you could easily lose around an hour at the start from being at the back of the pack making cut offs even tighter.

Yeah, thats what I'm thinking. Bunch of slow people taking up the whole road and you get stuck behind them on the ups and downs and lose a whole bunch of time.

It was more about the logistics of the start that I'd heard about it taking an hour to cross the start line, you then have an hour less to reach the cutoff. They've apparently worked at that and it was 6:50am when I started, so not too bad. There is a little bit of backup when you hit a climb, and many people don't really get the whole 'keep right unless you're overtaking' but if you have the legs for it, I think you can weave through people to keep to a pace you want. (Watch the video I posted for a bit of an idea)

Descending Puig Major with closed roads was pretty amazing. People are reasonably spread and you can descend pretty quick, I managed to average 31mph coming down (and that was actually slowed as we caught a van up and had to sit behind that for about 5 minutes). It was great fun though.

People moaned about the stops as they are basically just bits of road on the route, so you get slowed by everyone standing in the road. I didn't think they were too bad though. They had huge water tankers with lines of taps, so I was generally able to get water and crack on again within a matter of minutes, if not seconds. I took enough bars with me to pretty much be self sufficient as far as fuelling, although I had a sandwich at a later stop... which had more butter than ham and bread combined!

The vibe was generally quite good, I chatted briefly with a few people, but tbh I was more just focusing on survival  There are lots of cyclists even in the airport to chat with. In fact, our return flight was delayed as there were so many bike boxed to load...

Many of the videos I have seen on youtube have people going out to Sa Colobra to do an effort on it. i.e thats the aim of their ride. They take it easy to get there and then rest at the bottom, have a gel etc before going for it. Another one was a guided holiday I assume as they took a minibus to near the top of Sa Colobra before heading down and coming back up.
Everytime i've gone up Sa Calobra I seem to be unable to pootle out.... Up Femenia like a loon!

Enjoy the holiday @Roady - my first activity back is usually named "Post Holiday Fat & Slow" :D
I'm baaaaaaaaack! Still trying to get over the jetlag. Wednesday was ok (just long day) so slept well, back to work yesterday felt fine, Zwifted in the evening (felt loads better to be back spinning the legs) but then struggled to sleep afterwards so pretty slow today... I'm in 2 minds about doing an outside ride (club social) tomorrow but it would be a shame to miss this weather. I've got a sore arse from 1.5 hours of Zwift, I'm sure it's just that rather than the saddle @grudas sold me being full of hidden porcupines... :D

About the weather. Wow. When we left on the 15th it was drizzling rain and cold... Left our hotel in Florida this Tuesday lunchtime and it was 26 degrees. It likely got hotter before our flight at 6pm but under cold aircon on a transfer bus then stuck in the airport we didn't experience it... Landing in Manchester at 6am, eventually through security and bags and outside... It was boiling hot! Got in the car and leaving manchester wednesday morning at 9am it was 20 degrees! When over in Florida departures we'd put jeans & jumpers on, had to then get changed again in the car back to shorts!

So Monday night in Florida slept almost 7.5 hours. Tuesday night into Wednesday (flying) I slept 1.5 hours. Wednesday night slept 8 hours 15 mins, Thursday around 4 hours... Hope I sleep well later!

First time in America ate so much I gained 5.5kg
Second time in America got food poisoning and lost 3.5kg
First time in Jamaica other half figures out she's pregnant (after drinking lots of rum)

The trips since have been better/non-eventful so fingers crossed for more of the same! Think last time took a few days to settle post-travel and it was 2kg gain (which I'll take again for 14-15 days off the bike!) ;)
Thankfully non-eventful trip from chaos/problem/health wise... Except my other half having a phlegmy 'tickle' type cough the whole time. She had a bit of something before we went (works in a college so we didn't want to call it covid!), but over there under cold aircon it was triggered every time. Outdoors warm air totally fine, so barely coughed during the daytimes. Hopefully now we're back she shifts it...

Home before Florida 75kg, return, 12 hours post flight 79.9kg. Next morning 78.6kg - after Zwifting 12 hours later 76.6kg. In a daze this morning so forgot to weight, but expecting around 76/77kg once things level out which isn't bad and same as last time! 16 days off the bike.

I took my BOLT with me and 90% the days logged it, going through now trimming/cropping and splitting to take the bus travel out, so should just be left with the walking... My poor feet! Check out my Day 1 - 3.5km to get some snacks, 10km in the park (some rides I know...) & 5.3km 'walking' back for a bus (but does include 3km on a boat). So expect we walked at least 10km most days, some maybe as much as 15km!

No, I think it's some kind of cuff/bracket. I took photos so I could ask Canyon for advice.

Bottom part the the 'cover' bit you're talking about, right? Although it's mostly worn through that straight line does look like it's plastic and been brittle enough to crack?

Top/middle is a rubber gromit which slides down the post? Then above that your tape from your Varia? As it's the canyon 'leaf' spring type seatpost it makes sense the 2 sides move - so will always have a hole/clearance for some dirt/water ingress... Which is all the brown gunk. It should mostly wash/wipe off as it's just fine dirt from being carried there by rain/spray/cleaning, but it can have an almost 'sandy' quality to it so don't rub it too hard against anything with a painted surface. After cleaning it maybe you can tell if the cover bit has cracked/broken or just deteriorated from movement. It should be a replaceable part - it has the 2 'springs' of the seatpost rubbing against it, so if plastic should be expected to wear away as they do.

Took it out for a first spin this weekend:

I need a slightly shorter stem but apart from that it moves nicely. Feels fast :).

Also need to spend some time trying to remove the parcel tape from the fork!
Aim to get some flexibility back first before changing your stem so can reduce that positive angle and save our eyes ;)

Good to see mate, she does look good! Some kinda 'sticky label remover' spray stuff. TIM cleaner for headsinks even... Or brake cleaner. To be fair it's just a residue to enough elbow grease to rub it and be careful not damage the paint surface doing it is the low-cost option... But I'd use a cleaner as less likely to damage.

Yeh that Factor does look nice!

Rode 170 miles over the weekend on the new throne. Should have changed soon after getting the bike, been noticing it more and more lately. This one is MUCH more comfortable when in an 'aggressive aero' position (previous saddle doesn't have a cut out). General riding is noticeable too.

Image doesn't show, I tend to use imgur for free if you're after an option (there a 'share bb code' button) but good to hear! I found the same with cutouts... Always rode a narrow and firm Fizik Arione, then Diverge came with a softer & wider with cutout and I hadn't got a spare... Found it immediately more comfortable, then went the Power as progression and still like it. But still getting soreness and sores so not adverse to trying now.

This thread usually comes to a holt when @Roady leaves the building
Hahaha, I had high hopes with a few fresh faces in here and generally less activity from me the last couple of years things had changed...!
As mentioned previously, I was doing the Mallorca 312 on Saturday.
Mega riding mate and have to take the positives - still a massive day as you've said... Does also set things up nicely for a return with some missed targets there! :D

Who gets gels and from where. My body isn't fussy and I just need some for racing and emergency rations, so usually go for best bang for buck. Only thing I don't like is coffee/espresso flavour!

I just keep an eye on amazon for when good deals appear, I used to use wiggle but i've no idea what state they are in these days.

Torq but they only have offers a two or three times a year, so sign up to their mailing list.

Ages ago I got some Powerbar gels cheap when they were on offer somewhere. I'd buy them again as they weren't bad. I think the two flavours were vanilla and strawberry.

High5 are fine, but for me SiS are firmly in the "I'm in a very dark place" emergency only category.

yeah agree with the above. High5 are good but need lots of them, SiS my bathroom is a mess the next day but will get me through mega rides.

It should be a replaceable part
Yeah, Canyon have sold me a new one. When I asked about Warrenty they said it was wear and tear (fair enough) but they comp'd me the shipping on this occasion.

I decided to replace the seat post as apparently the element at the top has worn out and wont hold the saddle without a little movement. The LBS said you couldn't get a new element at the top, I think they might be wrong, but I have a new post now anyway.

Ha ha, tbh, if I was closer to cutoff and closer to just being able to do 225, maybe. But the reality was, it wasn't all that close... so no, we have our eyes on the Maratona instead next year :D

I can't lie, I've not considered the differences between the two. I find the SiS to not be a nice consistency though. I like that the High5 are almost a drink. I recently fell in love with the Torq flapjacks. I could eat the Bakewell version all day long...

The OGT salted caramel bars are really nice. I must be in the minority of people who like the consistency of SIS gels.

I have a bunch of styrkr ones that are nice but expensive

Thanks all will take a look. I'm a fan of sis normally but they never do the stonking offers like they used to. High 5 are a bit watery and runny for racing and end up half down me!

Big fan of Styrkr Bar50 and Gel50 (not as much a fan of the regular gels). The Mix90 is also really good, but I tend to make my own these days.

Great way of getting 50g of carbs (and 90g for the mix)
