Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

I moved from Octopus to Eon. I found the customer service of Octopus - something a lot of people rave about - to be horrendous!

I also often had issues with billing. So far Eon have been night and day better.

on the 28th of April octopus mailed out that there would be 3.5p electricity for all electricity use for any off peak period.

i am just wondering if anyone has gotten that back yet? from what i can tell i was charged the normal amount and have not had any credits. am not worried, its only a couple of quid, just curious really.

edit refund came in yesterday. I know it's sad but the reason I was interested was my April electricity was £1.20 and I had been hoping for a "free" month. (for no reason.really). anyway my refund for 28th April was £1.58 so mission accomplished

goal for May is to have a free electricity and gas bill combined but that is a big ask with 2 EVs in the mix needing charging

I hadn't realised as I always plug my car in in the evening but on sunny days Octopus Intelligent Go will give you cheap charging in the day (if you plug in). Most of the afternoon is scheduled as cheap rate today.

yep you can get slots when ever the only limit is you can only state you want your charge completed by between 4am and 11am.

I am not condoning this but my mate with a Tesla games it by limiting his Tesla charge rate he gets cheap energy most of the day almost every day in winter when his solar is not producing (when it is he saves more by not charging)

If you have solar and export a lot, Octopus will all also turn on IO and steal your exports in the day.

So instead of being paid 15p/kwh, you pay 7p/kwh for anything you are importing.

Same here. I switched electricity to Tomato on 19th Feb and still haven't had my final bill from Octopus which means I haven't been billed at all by Tomato. Octopus customer service keeps saying they are waiting on something or other. Tomato says they are waiting on Octopus to agree final readings. I thought smart meters were supposed to make all this easy but this is just ridiculous!!

I've not had an issue with them over the last year. I am on their fixed tariff too and considering changing the tariff when it's up for renewal in August.

We fixed upon EDF, 15p off each standing charge so if the unit price drops in summer it will be all to the good.

Stuck watching Good Morning Britain against my will and Martin Lewis is doing a segment about energy payments, they've had two people send in questions and both have been about "why has my direct debit increased when I'm on a fixed rate energy tariff?".

And my partner wonders why I'm so cynical about people. :D

Looking to move again after only 3 months with OVO. When we joined them back in March they said that after 8 weeks we could pay the whole amount every month which is how I paid with EDF at the time. However, yesterday they told me I had to pay by Direct Debit (DD) and was told the wrong information. The only way I can pay the monthly bill is to cancel the DD and pay the bill upon receipt but this will mean being put onto their SVR. I told them I'd move then but they said there's a £50 exit fee which I've managed to get them to drop it due to being misled about the bill payment.

Not impressed by their CS so now I'm on the hunt again to swap. Just had a cursory look online and looks like I may be going back to EDF! Thought I'd sorted it all out but there you go.

I'd like to say I'm surprised the boneheads (Government) have chosen to align UK carbon trading with the EU increasing UK carbon costs by expected £4/tonne. I'm assuming there was some concern that there was still some industry left in the UK and not enough pensioners were freezing to death. But in truth it was entirely predictable. So much for making energy cheap.

The main issue is its simply more efficient to keep throwing them up where its most windy, ie east coast
There is some cost benefit in some areas as well, east coast like east anglia way has low water depths

Trust me there are plenty of NIMBYs round here, just like the rest of the country

East anglia has the lowest rainfall of the UK, but not sure if that correlates to lowest cloud as well in regards solar, or maybe its the generally flat landmass which is also generally fairly cheap as is mostly arable grade
A lot of it is linked. The part of the country that gets more of the jetstream, gets more of the rain, storms etc. But this correlates with wind as well.
Where I live e.g. most days have little to no wind and consistent weather from day to day. Much more stable weather than say Wales or Scotland.
So yeah the economics of doing this stuff in the midlands will be poor. Much more sense to transmit it from other locations.

A quick update. After sending them yet another email on Wednesday and threatening to escalate things I magically got a reply the next day and my final bill. It only took them just over three months and loads of emails which they tried fobbing me off and my account is finally closed. So much for Octopus class leading customer service!! No mention of the compensation they so proudly boast about in their T's+C's either. By my reckoning they owe me £80, £40 for not giving me my final bill within 6 weeks of leaving and another £40 for not paying me the first £40 within 10 days of their failure to issue me a final bill.

Which energy comparison sites do people use and recommend these days? I've tried a couple from the top results in Google and the prices seem to vary between them, despite providing my exact tariff and usage details. Most of them don't match my own usage calculations either, being up to £20 out in some cases.

I generally use the Money Saving Expert Energy Club but check against the Meerkats and Go Compare. I then do a direct quote with any that look good.

I've not had reason to move the past few times though, as I don't have smart meters or solar, so Out Fox the Market have been the best deal. They didn't charge me to switch to a better deal last time either.

I dont use any as they tend to focus on size of DD and EAC. When all I care about is SC and cost per kWh.
