Hey guys,

Setup my altered pc last night and it’s running fine but think the nvme is dodgy..

So I have a new Crucial one coming today..

My question is, can I put my pc tower on the carpet floor to change out the nvme?

I don’t really want to lug it into the kitchen as it’s very very heavy and worry about dropping it.

Is that safe to do or is static etc a risk in this?

Its fine, just leave the mains PSU cable in and turn off the mains at the plug, the case and everything metal will be earthed, touch any exposed metal on the case and you will be too. Ideally you would have a ground strap connected at all times but truth be told if you earth yourself pick up the drive and let go there's minimal chance you'll have built up an component damaging charge. Also, just be careful to not touch any contacts on the drive / Motherboard if you want to be extra careful.

Check that the power cable that plugs into the PSU has 3 (female) pins. In the highly unlikely event that it only has 2 pins then that would mean that there is no earth provided to the PSU & case.

Wash and hoover the area of carpet you are putting it on. Repeat for 7 days. Let it dry for a minimum of a month. Then it will be safe to use!

Wouldn't it be impossible to connect such a cable (C17) to a PC's PSU anyway?

I have found components are generally quite forgiving so long as you don't rub yourself with balloons beforehand.

When you hold your first child in your arms, you treat them like glass.
When you're holding your 3rd or 4th, you know these little stubby meatbags are way tougher than glass. So you sling them around like a sack of spuds.

Building PC's is just the same.

On a more serious note, the answer is, as always. "It depends"

If you're shuffling around in Nylon Socks on a Nylon Carpet in an arid environment, then, yeah, you'll have issues.
