Given the level of intelligence they've so far displayed, they're probably the ones that stayed around to whilst everyone else ran in a variety of other offences.
I absolutely do not believe they didn't know what that tree represents. They were likely given guidance to play dumb, in order to hope for a more lenient sentence.

Ironically if no one cared about it they wouldn't have cut it down. If they cut it down to annoy people, surely it serves to not give them what they want?

What example is that? Make them do some good in the community. Spending a few hundred thousand of tax payers money to send them to prison for a few years? How does that do any good. It won't put anyone else off doing really stupid things and more than a few hundred hours community service would.
Are you saying people would rather go to jail for years over doing community service?
If anything People would do more stupid things if they thought they would be doing community service over going into prison

Plus more than likely it will incentivise them to do actual crimes after they've been recruited by whatever gang controls their prison. It would be far easier to just publicly humiliate them by building a pillory at Trafalgar square and having no police be present.

I wish people got this angry at the destruction of the rain forests - they really are essential.
As for this tree, yes it was really horrific what they did and they defo deserve several years in prison IMO, destruction of the planet needs to be taken seriously, although it seems their sentence will be more for the cultural damage done.
Either way, a great shame and mindless morons that need locking up.

I don't think it'll count as the highest category: no risk to life or intent to cause physical harm. The damage was irreplaceable but not valued in the millions. One of them has been locked up since December and so will get those months counted against their sentence too.

Yeah they are in effect doing time now as they are being detained for their own safety.
Chopping down some random tree is unlikely to be more than a fine. It'll be more severe than that, but I don't think it'll be considered the worst possible severity.
No, i'm saying that people who do this sort of thing won't be put off by a short prison sentence any more than they would be by a lot of community service. Will prison do anything good for these two? Unlikely. Will it put other people off doing similarly stupid things? Unlikely considering this is a very very rare case so it clearly isn't a big issue.
I don't see the point in throwing away a few hundred thousand pounds worth of tax payers money to achieve nothing. They are not dangerous. They don't need to be removed from the streets for our safety. They haven't hurt anyone. People get far less punishment than they guys will for hurting or killing someone in their car by doing things that are a danger to the general public. Work that one out...
We don't know the sentence yet ? if you told me which I rather do id pick community service over doing few months in prison
Also even if you say they haven't hurt anyone, I respect nature and it really grinds my gears when people destroy it just community service wouldn't be enough punishment for me
