LG G5

Which one are you using? I used Logitech Harmony in the past but these days I’m mostly standardised on the Apple TV one.

URC MX-850's. I have four of them :D

Did the repair sheet thing a little while ago, as some of them were acting up.

Unfortunately decent programmable IR remotes are going the way of the dodo

I noticed my 65" CX had 100's of Fracked pixels and sub pixels along the top and bottom edge at the weekend, Called JL they gave me a good fair voucher,....... Ordered a 65" G5 just now to replace it, should be a big upgrade and 40th birthday treat to myself

Finally a reason to upgrade from a C1. More brightness would be nice for HDR though as I've not experienced brighter panels besides the silly setups in Currys I am currently ignorant to the benefits of an even brighter panel.

The thing that bugs me on the G series is the silver trim on the bezel. Why oh why... It's distracting and would have been fine if I couldn't see it face on.

Would there be a noticeable improvement in OLED pixel brightness on the C5 vs (my current) C3? I've owned the C3 for 2 years, but in it's new room it gets the light from the afternoon onwards through the evening. Obviously closing the blinds and curtains is an option but I feel daft doing this in the afternoon just to watch something. Or are there alternatives that handle glare better than LG OLED TVs? The 55" C5 with cash back from LG is £1,599. Thanks.

That's still way to expensive when a G4 55" was less than 1k recently.

If glares a problem go Samsung?

Very similar situation as i am in now, my 77" CX has suffered burn in and after a few discussions with JL they have given me a voucher for £2200 towards a new screen ( new C4 is £2200 hence the price offered )... I am now looking at upgrading to either the G4 which i will need to put £700 towards or the G5 which will cost an additional £1800 after cashback so basically a £1100 difference between the G4 to G5 once all said and done . I'm still trying to decide what to do but the G5 does seem like the one to go for as ultimately looks to be a better screen between the 2 of them with it being noticeably brighter and has a slightly higher refresh rate at 165hz vs 144hz , my only other issue is I'm shocked at the price of protect plus from JL now as when I purchased the CX was £140 extra for 5 years but now it's £500 on the G5 making me question do I really need it this time ....

I honestly can't see how the difference between the G4 and G5 is worth £1,100. The G4 is still very, very bright. It'll be a significant improvement over the CX.

Even just watching this YT comparison I can clearly notice the difference between the CX and G4 and from what I can see will be a very noticeable upgrade especially in HDR

But I then watch this comparison of the G4 vs G5 which again is noticeable making the decision a bit harder to choose

IMO: you bought a C series 5 years ago and have been happy. So no doubt you will be happy with a C series now.

If moving to a G series that's another step up, so you could pay the extra if you like.

Going to the G5 over G4 will be one more step but do you need a third degree of improvement over a TV you already liked?

Seems to me this is smaller improvements each time (4 years, to G, to G5) for increasing costs (zero, +700, +1100 more).

Feels like a no brainer to me but I'm not desperate to squeeze 24/45 more Hz out of my screen :)

Yeah tbh was very happy with the picture i was getting on the CX but will admit i wasn't paying much attention to the upgrades the screens have had over the years in regards to brightness and it's only now I'm reading/ watching many reviews thst it's become clear how much it has moved on in that time

When JL offered me a C4 i was all but ready to just say send me that as a replacement until I saw a review comparison of the C4 and G4 which is where it was noted that the G4 is a much better screen with the MLA and worth the extra money if you can stretch to it ( it's also a better screen than the current C5 and cheaper  ) , this got me very interested in the G4 and was very ready to go with that and may still do ....

Then thought let's look at the G5 and yet again panel has changed to a 4 stack RGB tandem panel and brought significant upgrades along with it over the G4 which as we know is already no slouch, slightly higher refresh which would be nice but by no means essential as I also have a 1440p 480hz oled for competitive play just 165hz at 4k at 77" would be nice but then so would 144hz but that brightness difference is noticeable and I don't want it to be a case of regretting not going with the G5 .... Dad has always said " Son, quality is remembered long after price "

I have a G4 and can confidently say that that video makes the G4 look far less bright than it actually is in real world use. That's not to say Vince's video isn't accurate, just that I've yet to watch or play anything on mine and wished I had a G5 instead. :)

Yeah i assume it's just where they are side by side with a reference monitor at the bottom that it then is noticeable where as watch either of them on their own and will be a damn sight harder to distinguish the difference. From the research I've done it seems the G4 will hit a maximum peak brightness of 1500nits while the G5 will hit 2300nits which is why the difference is noticeable when side by side, mainly on the white screen section like the matrix clip they use . Basically the G4 gets plenty bright enough for everyday use just the G5 will do it a touch better... I'm finding it a difficult decision to make but need to act sharpish as the G4 won't hang around for much longer at their current prices

Reality is the G5 is 50% brighter than the G4 in any content

The reported brightness seems crazy, but I'd have to see it in person to know if it's too much.

How have they managed to increase it so much? While also making them less prone to burn-in.

I'm due for an upgrade to one of our OLEDs in the house and the G5, when it goes on sale towards the end of the year, will probably be the one.
