Doom - The Dark Ages (2025)

Gamepass version runs the exact same as Steam version, also, "only" 2x FG =

Average framerate : 190.3 FPS
Minimum framerate : 162.2 FPS
Maximum framerate : 224.9 FPS (my global fps cap)
1% low framerate : 80.6 FPS
0.1% low framerate : 75.3 FPS

Not shabby. It's always over 100fps without FG of course.

The animations are so cool it has to be said, these are slowed down 50% from a 120fps video in Shadowplay:

Slowmo-1----1920x1080.gif

Slowmo-2----3840x2160.gif

Slowmo-3----1920x1080.gif

Slowmo-4----1920x1080.gif

I've had a blast through the opening missions this morning. It runs well and looks great on my 12900k/4080 super on higher settings at 3440x1440. Gameplay-wise it's ... alright. The shield addition works quite well and thankfully they've done away with the "grab" button to climb up walls (you just hold the jump button now). It's fast and frenetic as you'd expect from Doom and, so far, it feels like they've tried to move away from the "enter area, start the industrial metal soundtrack, shoot spawning waves of enemies, move to next area" but it's such a simple game there's not a massive amount to vary.

Therein lies the problem I think - there's dozens of boomer shooters that do the same thing but arguably better (albeit with less polished graphics) that cost around a tenner. I got this through xbox gamepass (which I won in a competition so it literally hasn't cost me anything!) but I'd be suffering a bit of buyer's remorse if I'd paid £70 for it and absolutely devastated if I'd paid for the £100 version.

Like I say though, I'm still getting started so perhaps it will improve.

Just had a quick go this morning thanks to gamepass. It looks nice and all but Doom seems to be the same every time. Sprint around shooting monsters, rinse and repeat. Which whilst fun for a short time, I don't know how anyone could pay £50-£70 for this :p.

Anyone on an nVidia card and are using FSR to get frame gen? Just attempting first play with that on but it crashed.

Wondering (once I get it working) which will be better? DLSS with lower frames or FSR with higher.

A good hour in so just started, messing aroound with the graphics to find a good balance:

12600k
32GB Ram
3080FE 10GB
2560x1440

Currently on highest settings (Ultra Nightmare)
DLSS on set to quality
HDR on

70-90FPS which is very playable

If I switch to DLAA FPS drops to 50-60 which is when it struggles a bit so turned back to DLSS.

Cannot grumble at that with my system.

Gameplay feels more of the same so if you like the last 2 then you will like this but early days yet.....

This is on gamepass version.

DLSS, there is zero reason to use FSR when the transformer model exists for DLSS for the better IQ, use Performance mode if you need fps as IQ is barely impacted.

Running lovely and looks great, 100% need to wait for the PT update though given the lighting will be critical to the games visuals!

For performance, with my 5080 overclocked, depending on area, fps can be around 95+ and with lots of enemies and **** hitting the fan, seems a pretty consistent 80s+ fps range (maxed at 4k with dlss quality)

Thanks. Just had a quick play. With medium settings (a few higher), DLSS balanced, textures at 4GB and 4K resolution - I'm getting ~80 average though not sure what my 0.1/1% lows are but it runs very well. It does look a tad soft to me though.

Edit - on a 3090.
