New soundbar

If you're not in a massive hurry it might be worth waiting to see if the deals on the Samsung Q930D and/or Q990D come back, they were both well under £500 after trade-in/cashback offers a few months ago; my Q990D cost me £406 in December. There's still stock of both out there including from Samsung directly, so it's likely they'll want to clear them as the 2025 replacements appear.

This.

I'd actually been considering getting rid of my Sonos for Wiim set up! I'll give this one some thought

Easy to get bargains if you look around

That's a 4.0 system

I found this...

Would I be right in assuming that will deliver noticeably superior sound than most sound bars? Certainly better than any sound bar in the same price bracket?

£450 isn't great value those speakers about £200.Amp was £330 new

Haven't heard that system however something like that would be superior to a soundbar in principle due to it's standardisation you have three components

Avr
Subwoofer
Speakers

Any one, two or three components can be replaced / upgraded with any other standard AV gear.

Upgrade the L/R speakers to better ones, re-use those yamaha L/R in a bedroom system
Upgrade the AVR for one with newer HDMI features, more power, more zone outputs, as standards change AVR becomes obselete (ie if you want to use a console for 4K/120hz VRR then need HDMI 2.1 model)
Upgrade the subwoofer with any standard active subwoofer, re-use that Yamaha sub in a PC 2.1 system

Look for another system ones that are better vfm

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm set on a second hand 5.1 separate system now.

There's also the option of starting with a quality 2.0 setup and building from there, rather than a budget 5.1 from the off, which you could end up not being happy with.

This might sound a little backwards, but it could be worth planning what final 5.1 setup you want to end up with (brand, speakers etc) and then start your 2.0 setup with the surround speakers, but use them as the front L/R. This way you have a better chance of staying within your initial budget and when the time comes move them to the surround positions and buy your proper front L/R.

Be prepared though, I thought I could be content with a nice 2.0 setup, but within a month it turned into a 5.1 lol

Dual subs are even better. I noticed a big upgrade in bass and feeling of all around you bass with triple and then minidsp. When I had just one you could feel it coming from one location.

9.3.4 is even better still haha. It's a pity I have completed my system it's av pre power as well, as not much I can do now. Maybe replace side and front wide with matching quality ones but that's about it. Sub upgrade will be pointless as have triple sub with 13" 1800w per sub.

Good point about about the speakers use them as LR then save up for better LR then move the old LR to RR and RL. IE q acoustic 3020i as LR then get 3050i as LR. Or a another option is get LR use them for a bit then move them to bedroom or second system then get 5.1, 7.2, 7.2.4 etc etc

For low budget get as few speakers as possible. A decent 9.3.4 system is going to cost a fair amount.

Separates are like comparing a pc you build yourself, you can re use, upgrade , add bits as needed..compared to console

Alas, I'm at my limit with speakers - or perhaps more accurately; she is at her limit. I don't really find my sub's location obvious, it's FF as well! But then I have no reference to compare it to having only ever had one sub.

If I could upgrade I would probably get ceiling speakers, but it's never going to happen and it would involve a lot of work. I've been toying with those atmos ones you put on top of your front L/R, (can't mount them high at the front) but I worry they will have little impact, especially with the heigh ceiling.

Were these prices with Samsung direct? I’ve never seen them anywhere close to those prices but I’d snap one up if I do
