Your bad driving

One that annoys me quite a bit is when I stop for yellow boxes, one outside the fire station in a town I drive through particularly in mind, and the person behind me is getting funny about me stopping until it is fully clear. Blows my mind people have that poor appreciation/care as to why a yellow box might be there.

Overslept for work today and was running an hour late despite hurrying to get ready.

At a big-ish roundabout in town waiting to enter. I looked at the next enrance to my right, clocked a black 4x4, decided it wasn't coming my way (think I assessed it as turning left onto the exit I was waiting to emerge from). Looked past it to an artic lorry, saw a big enough gap and lorry was only just starting to move.

I accelerated pretty firmly but not full throttle, got almost all the way out... And said black 4x4 was a LOT closer to me than I'd expected. It's possible they had been in the left turn only lane or indicating which caused me to expect them to exit before me, but I expect I was just tired.

Luckily it was close enough to get a blast of the horn but not close enough to make contact. Ironically if I had known I was pulling out on someone I could have hit the throttle harder and not been in their way as much.

This is why I wait for people to commit, though it annoys people behind me sometimes, few too many times I've seen people on roundabouts appear to be doing one thing but then do another.

One for myself here.
This morning when waiting at a junction to merge on the main road. I was waiting to turn right, this is a sharp right hander with a curved main road. Say you see the approaching car on the right and then it disappears for a second and then is back in your sight.
Quoting myself to give a description of the road. Just realised it has been more than a year since that incident.

Funny enough it was another Land Rover today, an Evoque.

Waiting again patiently. One car stops in front of me to turn right where I was. I hoped slightly the car behind it will let me out. All this while I am checking oncoming traffic from my right. I like the first car's approach as the inent is clear that they will not be giving way to anyone that is waiting to merge.

The first car moves in and turns right. I check right quickly no ones there and ready to set off if the next car gives way. The second car lurches ahead and then stops. Till that point I hadn't moved at all. The lady in this second car gestured me to go. Off I went like an idiot and was on the receiving end of a loud honk from tbe Evoque who took an evasive manoueuvre while Braking. From my perspective, I think they were very slow hence I avoided the accident and saved my day.

Two wrongs here that I can think. First one is on me as I was the one merging on to main road. As much as I kept checking right I didn't do the one that mattered. Perhaps the Evoque was slow enough that it was on the brow between two of my first checks.

Second is following the hand gesture of that lady. I am sure she saw the Evoque, that's why she lurched and stopped. God knows why she gestured me to go.

The school run time is so busy and I hate it as that's the time I notice there is a scope for mistakes during that time.

Yesterday I was heading along the main road home, big wide 30mph road with plenty of room. No one behind me and just a delivery type moped in front who was wavering between 26 and 28mph, obviously looking down at his phone etc.

I got a bit tired of it as this is the sort of road you can do a clear 30 on and still feel it's not too fast. Moped slowed down even more so I indicated to overtake him and moved slowly out rather than blasting past. Either I accelerated way too slow or he sped up because I was alongside him at the same speed when a traffic island was upcoming. It was at this point he decided to notice me and look over but I was already slowing down to let him continue and move back in.

Felt pretty bad but I wasn't aggressive going into the situation, and he certainly wasn't paying enough attention either. He then indicated left and took the second turning he came to after doing so. Next time I'll just let people dawdle and sit back.

Managed to finally kerb the wheel on the Mondeo. That too today when it completed one month under my ownership. Irony is, this was the same wheel that the dealership had refurbished before delivering. :p

Took a little chip of the brand new Linglongs. Doesn't look too bad and tyre didn't lose any pressure.

Was driving in a 20 mph zone and a Van driver was closer than normal. I found a parking space on my left on this street. As I turned in slowly I missed the raised section of the kerb and "Bamm!". It sounded horrible, my 2 month old woke up with a jolt due to the sound and impact.

I was fearing the worse but it was ok and I can drive worry free now.

4th day of driving the new van and following the manuals guidance for running the engine in and I may have been a bit to gentle on the revs. Stalled twice, the second time I hospital grounds with a fair bit of traffic about. No idea how I managed it today but it is much more refined than the Boxer.

I have been so used to driving on engine sound for gear changes, it is slightly disturbing how much quieter this one is. I can actually hear the radio and my wife talking at the same time :p.

Sounds like you need to turn the radio up a bit! :D

On my way to work had someone a couple of cars ahead of me for some reason almost stop dead on the main road for some reason before pulling off into a garage - I'd expected them to do what most people do and just slow down slightly before turning and somehow didn't notice for a few moments the traffic ahead of me was stopped - I pride myself on being attentive to what the traffic ahead is doing. Fortunately I always leave a good gap to the car ahead so had room to stop safely but probably alarmed the driver ahead for a moment - if I'd been following at minimum highway code recommended distance as a lot of drivers do I'd have probably been into the back of them. Not quite sure how that happened - I hadn't slept well and took a nap before work which had left me a bit groggy feeling but not to the extent it would/should have affected my driving.

Ironically on my way home while stopped at traffic lights, one car ahead of me, had 2 lads in a modified BMW come tearing up behind and obviously hadn't seen I was stopped until the last minute which was alarming for a moment. For some reason the passenger thought it hilarious - the driver not so much.
