Hi All

i bought a custom pc from ocuk in December. Due to being out of the loop with gaming for a few years i went for the 4070ti super which is a good card but its struggling a bit in Black Myth Wukong with the following settings. In hindsight i would have gone for the 4080 super.

1440p
Graphics preset - Very high
Ray tracing on full
DLSS 80

I get around 50 fps on avg and drops to low 40s occasionaly, so still playable but if this a sign of where games are going then i'm thinking if i can get £5-600 my card its only a £3-400 for a 5080.
Or wait for the rumoured 5080 super? Happy to wait for a bit as once i'm done with BMW i'm going to play KCD 1 which the 4070Tis will have no problems with.
But i've got games like like Clair Obscur, Oblivion , AC Shadows lined up after that and i want to max out as much as possible at 60 + fps.

Thoughts?

There is some optimised settings and you can also drop down to DLSS balance (forgot the ratio right now), just make sure your running DLSS4 for better image quality if you do, the 5080 once OC'ed looks good but deffo needs the OC to be a meaningful upgrade really

Na dlss balanced looks notably worse to me. I’ll have a look at the OC versioms.

The performance difference between the two cards is too small to be worth doing unless you got a great deal already locked (unlikely). The issue in BMW is that you are using the path-tracing mode (= raytracing full), which is more of a future-GPU (or 5090) graphics mode, or at the very least requires much more aggressive upscaling targets (think 50%, aka performance DLSS, if not even 33% aka ultra performance). There's very few other games where you'll run into such issues, because few have such modes (Cyberpunk 2077, Indiana Jones ATGC, Alan Wake 2, the RTX remakes - HL2, Portal, Quake; might be 2-3 others but I can't remember). It goes without saying that even in "just" regular RT modes the games will run much, much better.

It looks amazing with path tracing and its a case of once seen theres no going back. I don’t mind 40-50 fps but i would prefer 60 and thats why i’m wondering about the 5080 as it can be 30% better performance. I think i will wait to see what the 5080 super price/performance is.

The 5080 is around 10% faster in 1440p
The 5080 is around 20% faster at 4k.

If you can get a good price for your 4070 ti super, and you can get RRP for the 5080, I don't see why not. Especially if you game at 4k.

I myself use FG. I don't actually have any issues with it. But I do ensure that I'm getting over 60 fps without it. Once I turn down the settings to get that, then I flip it on. It does smooth things out, but it needs a high refresh rate to start with.

My monitor caps out at 120, so the x4 FG is pointless for me.

However, that 20% uplift is an average actual uplift. If you're getting 50 FPS in a game, that 20% would be enough to take you to the 60fps required to enable FG.

Of course, it entirely depends on the games you're playing, and possible future games. Looks like the market is heading towards Unreal Engine, for all it's worth.

Given that, you might want to look at getting a used 4090 instead of the 5080. Especially considering the prices of the 5080. I know they are supposed to be 950 quid, but the street price is 300 quid off the RRP for a 4090.

Currently, it's cheaper to get a 4090 from the US (inc VAT and other fees) than the UK auction site.

You could get yourself a 4090 for the same price as a 5080.

i went from a 4070ti S to a 5080.for the extra £200-300 I thought I would give it a punt, and yes the performance is nice and good to have the latest Frame Gen tech when its needed!

I game at 4K 240Hz so another reason I bit the bullet.

I can get behind that. I was happy enough with my old monitor at 60, until I got the 120 Hz monitor. Once you get into high refresh land, it's difficult to go back isn't it. Anything below 90 fps starts to look juddery to me now.

yeah, the jump from 60Hz to 120/144 is a big one, not so much 144 to 240 but the 4K aspect is what sold it for me. Runs great so far! (touch wood).

Good lad, at the end of the day, it's your money, your happiness, regardless of the opinions of others. If something makes you happy, and isn't hurting others in the process, then I say everyone should go for it.

People complain about the pricing, but what's a night out these days. Easily 100 quid, right. Some people go out every weekend. So in just over 2 months, they've spent the same amount of money as you or I would on a GPU. Something you get enjoyment out, every single day.

And no hangover, or regrets the next morning!

yeah, i use my PC all the time, so upgrading it isnt a "waste" of money for me (although I need to start playing more games rather than testing FPS all the time! ).

thats a fair point, a night out aint cheap mate, and like you said a few months pays off a 50 series card!
