UEFA Europa League Final Tottenham vs Man U ** spoilers ** [Wednesday 21st May 2025 @8pm] - "El Crápico"

Still no idea why the yernited lot have any faith in amorim to be the guy, an entire half against a team that had zero desire to attack and the manager made no tweaks, no changes, just stuck with his 5 defenders creating nothing of note until the 90th minute. Embarrassing.

Whilst I remain to be convinced it's not like he couldn't exactly bring on prime Ronaldo

Amorim got it wrong last night. He went with Casemiro and Bruno against a fairly strong midfield 3.

Mount is useless at #10 and had no impact. Bruno was just adrift and unable to have much of an impact.

He also seemed to realise this pretty slowly and changed things quite late.

My fear is that whether people like him or not, he's badly damaged now and his job just became much more difficult.

I'm trying to be objective, but I think people are being blinded by his charisma (perhaps myself included), if he was Graham Potter we'd probably all want him gone.

He's gone from the hottest young coach in European football to chump in 6 months. You would question - is he out of his depth at this level?
United fans support him for a few reasons
1. He's charismatic and honest
2. He came with a track record of turning round a huge club (in Portugal granted) in quick time and generated a player and fan rapport akin to what Klopp had at Liverpool.
3. He is a bulwark against the disastrous ownership and stewardship of the club
4. Fans need hope and we are tired of letting the ownership off the hook by letting them shift blame to the coach
5. He didn't want the job in November because he knew there was a high likelihood of this happening
6. We all know that our squad is a mess of previous coaches and poor recruitment and that he shouldn't be judged on other peoples failings.

Arguably the club needed this nadir to come to reach a turning point. If you look at the suitability of this squad to play his style of football it's almost all wrong. He explained this to the board when he was interviewed. They hired him all the same presumably with a longer term view. One signing of a young unproven wing back is not ideal support when you are changing a play style.

Every United fan could reel off ten players who need to leave the club. How many other EPL teams can say the same?

Ultimately as a fan you need to have belief and he's the best hope we have that the playing side of the club can be rebuilt and not just fudged over. It's a gamble but whats the alternative. The club knows the fans won't have a Southgate - a pragmatist who might stabilise things but hasn't proved he can win.

Honestly, he made some questionable calls last night. I don't get the Mason Mount thing. Playing Fernandes deep doesn't often work, Mazraoui is not a wing back, Shaw is a waste of a shirt as is Hojlund. But, they are what he has at his disposal - he played them and we got the same as we have all season. More possession, more chances but no goals. That's the familiar story for United.

Personally I see Amorim as one of the few likable people at the club - that counts for something. I still have faith.

I think that game just mirrored so many of our games this season. No quality in the final third. Spurs were awful. Turned up to do exactly what they did. Sit in, defend and try to nick a goal. I can't say Spurs deserved to win the EL but what does that say about us when we couldn't create anything of note either.

Only player who really came out of that with their head held high was Yoro.

The club have a decision to make. Do they keep Armorim knowing that they can't actually back him properly this season and hope that he delivers CL football next year and can build over a few years or do we get rid of him and bring in a manager that doesn't need quite so many wide ranging changes.

It was a gamble to bring him in mid-season. It would have been a big gamble to bring him in at the end of the season with how different his football is to our personnel.

I have no idea what the right answer is. Time will tell. I have no idea what choice they will go with. Fundamentally our players aren't good enough. When we watch the CL final we will see what good players look like. Players who are quick, can pass, can drive into space, take risks, make runs etc.

You can argue that Amorims tactics don't suit these players but ultimately this set of players has a low ceiling.

At the moment I am currently leaning towards getting rid of Amorim simply because I don't think we can give him what he needs in the timeframe he would need it.

Pretty much agree with everything you've said there. My main worry is that things haven't been bad, they've been so bad that we're potentially finishing one spot above relegation - and the squad, for all its many flaws, is better than that.

Managers need to exude confidence and authority, and his ability to do that has been irreparably damaged over the last 6 months. I just wonder whether it's fixable now.

CL football is not realistic next season. The overhaul needed to get his system working extends beyond a few signings - assuming it even works in the end.

Interesting you're leaning towards getting rid of him - I think it's pretty easy to make the case either way at the moment. I keep changing my mind on it - which isn't exactly a vote of confidence in Amorim.

Recent signings haven't exactly been stellar either. Ugarte and Dorgu namely. Zirkzee has improved but isn't great really.

Yeah but the days of signing obviously proven class players like, Berbatov, Tevez, Van Persie etc. are no longer here.

Now it seems like it's more gamble purchases; 73 million on Rasmus Højlund.

I still don't have an issue with him or his system, I think hes just been put in a completely untenable situation and there is no right answer right now. I think that the Premier League finds out a lot of managers and I think that bringing in a manager who plays a completely different style of football mid season without the ability to give him the players he needs isn't going to work well.

The main reason I am leaning towards replacing him is simply the situation the club is in. If we had won last night, I would be far more confident about backing him. Not because he won a trophy but because we would have had the funds to back him.

Delighted he got a trophy though, been an unreal player in the league for ages

Yeah, him and Kane were beastly together.

Just checked bbc sports, yep spurs have won a trophy I didn’t dream it:cool:
Feels good being a spurs fan today! I hope for everyone’s sake Ange leaves with his head held high this summer and neither side gets tempted for him to stay.

Lots of Spurs fans saying he should stay now. The parallels with EtH are...stark. I would suggest that most fans would have been driving him to the airport if you lost yesterday. Suddenly the caveats are coming out about injuries this season. Winning a trophy. Turning a corner.

So who d'you replace him with?

First Van Gaal was the answer to the Moyes problem. Then Mourinho was the answer to the Van Gaal problem. Then OGS was the answer to the Mourinho problem. Then ten Hag was the answer to the OGS problem. Then Amorim was the answer to the ten Hag problem. Who is next and what on Earth would lead anyone to think that anything would be better? Especially now that there's a vastly reduced pot to pay for new signings.

Yes I am with this. I think he should at least get the summer, not sure if there is much possibility re new players.

He should never had joined during the season really.

Not much ecouragemnt this season of course. But you got to give him the summer surley.

He inherited this team which were already a mess. I do wonder if he regrets the move himself by now tbh. When you had the likes of Bayern and Liverpool sniffing around (if reports are to be correct) then well, he probably does regret the move.

No idea. I think the unique issue with Amorim is the system he plays, and he won't deviate from that even slightly. As mentioned, our somewhat limited funds mean that will add another level of cost and risk to the rebuild...

Of course, the club knew all this when appointing him, he made it crystal clear to them too, but they won't have expected this. I think it's been a miscalculation by Berrada.

My main issue is that I'd expect a manager to play to the strengths of the squad and change it over time. I don't think there's a way to rebuild a club of this size from a position of weakness, the drama is just off the charts.

The relentless negative press about INEOS and the Glazers is another big problem as well. Every decision INEOS make is being splashed all over the news and it's primarily negative. The fancy new stadium plan has already been forgotten; though it seemed like pie in the sky stuff anyway.
