Monaco

In 1215 – sort of – Monaco was established as a Genoese colony, marking the tiny Principality’s rather modest beginnings.

Fast forward to 1929, when the roar of racing engines echoed through Monaco for the first time. Antony Noghes, a cigarette manufacturer with a penchant for speed, teamed up with his buddies from the Automobile Club de Monaco to create what is now one of the most iconic races in the world. Part of the Formula 1 World Championship since its inaugural season in 1950, the Monaco Grand Prix has been a fixture since 1955.

Monaco’s track is famously narrow and undeniably legendary. Piquet once quipped that driving there felt like “riding a bicycle around your living room,” which pretty much sums it up. Drivers love the challenge – precision is key, nerves are tested, mistakes are punished. But don’t expect much overtaking; the 2003 Grand Prix featured a thrilling total of… zero passing moves!

Picture this: a glamorous holiday on the French Riviera, the scent of the sea and Formula 1 cars zooming past spots where locals casually pick up a carton of milk. Add the chance to stroll the track after the day’s action or even have dinner on it at a terrasse bar – it’s as surreal as it sounds.

If your yacht or penthouse view is unavailable, aim for Grandstands L to P near the Swimming Pool section, where drivers dart through aicane at 200 km/h. For an even glitzier experience, try Grandstand B overlooking the ritzy Casino Square. Monaco: where speed meets sophistication, and bicycles are best kept out of living rooms.

*insert standard JRS gripe about standard OcUK Motorsport gripes about Monaco here*

Now that's out of the way...

...I can't decide quite how much I hate this idea yet. It's really only designed to 'fix' one thing, which was drivers using the early red flag last time out to burn off their mandatory tyre change and then cruise to the flag. Perhaps a better idea would have been the banning of all working on the car under red flag conditions (unless it's a safety issue like a puncture or broken front wing, in which case change tyres/change nose and restart from the back). Or even just direct Pirelli to bring only the softer compounds that simply can't be made to last a full race. They're bringing the Imola-spec C6 compound here which might help things, but maybe they could have left everything harder than the soft compound at home.

I have to admit I like Gary Anderson's article from a year or so ago suggesting that F1 should take advantage of the on-going development work and extend the circuit a little out just before Portier in an effort to create a DRS/overtaking zone.

Someone actually tried this in some F1 Sim (albeit its Monaco "as is" not with any modifications to make that new section a "racetrack")

Agree that the current width of the F1 cars being the same as a Transit van, a classic street circuit which can’t be made wider isn’t going to give close racing.

hopefully the two stops will make it a bit more interesting, wonder if there is some bonkers strategy like pitting on laps 2 and 3, use the empty track in front of you to get to the back of the pack and then move up the grid as everyone pits later in the race.

Would love to see someone try something daft like that

Width isn't the problem:

Length and weight are. Plus almost no-one on the grid these days having any kind of actual racecraft, of course ;)

The same disgraceful censorship that was applied as last year, voter rights should not be dictated to.
This is not a democracy :p

Starting on hards, ending up so far in front and then pitting on the last two laps.

Would you be able to get two consecutive stops without getting lapped?

I was thinking if there's a safety car you could do that, pit twice and 'run' that extra tyre set for one lap?

Either way, as usual, epic Saturday, forgettable Sunday, can't wait :p

Mostly width though, as a decent amount of overtakes in the 1800mm width through 2011 - 2015 (with no refueling to lower weight)

Hopefully next years regulations moving to 1900mm makes a little bit of a difference (although the rest of the regulations / power units etc will probably negate it :D )
