Got a 1200 watt PSU

Running a 5090 and a 10940 14 core CPU

Along with 8 Drives, 8 sticks of RAM, 8 USB ports fully populated, AIO cooler, RGB light, sound card 10 RGB fans

On load I think im pulling way more than a 1000 watts

Had my 1st PC shut down today on full load, gotta be the PSU ?

Ive never had a PC shut down since I swapped a faulty PSU after 7 years of use, only shut down during gaming, full load, bought a new PSU and it stopped, this was like 6 years ago

Im thinking my PSU is struggling since I have a 5090 now?

I'd get a power meter so you can tell how much you're pulling. It could be the PSU, but not necessarily. What make is it? You probably won't get as much juice out of a cheap PSU as a more expensive one, even if they're both quoted at 1200W.

I would have thought that 1200w (as long as it's a good one) would be more than enough for your pc? Like the others say, what is the make and model of the psu? How is the 5090 powered, seperate cables into the adaptor or daisy chained cables into the adaptor or is it the psu's own high power lead? Have you tried undervolting the card?

it's not beyond the realms of possibility

your 1.2kw psu is now 6+ years old now, presumably with the capacitor degradation, it'll be more a 1kw psu than 1.2kw

the 10940x is very power hungry and will easily pull 250-300w at full pelt when overclocked
the 5090 will pull 600w (630-900w peak) - https://www.techpowerup.com/331542/...excursions-tested-can-spike-to-901w-under-1ms

also with all the other hardware you have, i wouldn't be surprised that's another 100-200w of power unaccounted for

imo, it doesn't leave a lot of room for maneuver even with a 1.2kw psu
that kind of hardware calls for >1.5kw ATX 3.1 that will withstand the power spikes demanded by the 5090

What PSU is it ?
its an old 1st gen asus rog thor 1200watt psu, the oled screen shows i pull 900 watts on gaming and my 360mm AIO cooler the radiator gets really hot, so not sure if I should start with a 3.1 PSU maybe 1500watt?

Ive been planning on a new build too but choosing on which CPU to go for delayed me

I think either a new CPU for now or a complete new build and strip off my exisiting build other than the GPU

yep the led panel shows 900+ watts and on intensive RTX enabled games I feel like the PSU struggles?> heat from rad too

maybe a decent PSU, maybe spend 350ish or around that figure, MSI 1500 watt PSU good?
