NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - (PRE)ORDER DISCUSSION **NO COMPETITOR HINTING**

My new AM5 rig is up and running, 9800X3D + Astral OC 5090. This thing is insane. Compared to my old 3700X + RX 580 system, it's cranking out FPS like it's nothing.
What's really impressing me is the thermals, it just doesn't get hot. My RX 580 used to sit around 85C at max load, while the highest temps I've seen on this system was 73C on the 9800X3D at 100% load during shader preloading on Stalker 2.
I also got 2 gen4 M.2 4TB SSDs and it's a crazy improvement from my old 1TB HDD I used to keep my games on.
Massive improvements across the board, it's everything I wished for.

I'm playing on 1080p 144Hz currently, and Stalker 2 didn't quite hit refresh rate on native resolution due to CPU bottleneck, but with 2x framegen it plays great with not much added latency, and I didn't notice a visual difference between real and fake frames like all the videos I watched would have me believe. Maybe it's because I wasn't using DLSS?

Barely any coil whine, no missing ROPs, all pins reading equal current draw in the GPU Tweak III software (I used the 4 to 1 Pcie adapter provided with the GPU)

Why are you at 1080p? with a 5090

Unless you're a CS pro :D

Frame gen works OK if you either have 60-70+ base FPS and using 2x to try and hit ~120+ or base 100+ with MFG for a high refresh display - any other combination will be like the videos would have you believe.

because my old system could barely even hit refresh rate on that lol. monitor is next on the purchase list for sure. I feel like a 280Hz 1440p monitor would be perfect for the kind of games I play. 4k seems like the top pick for a 5090, but I prefer high refresh rates.
I don't upgrade my PC often, but this time I think that it's going to be fine for a while lol.

yeah, I was getting like 85-110 fps in the Stalker 2 intro, with 2x frame gen it's basically 155-180 FPS on average, which is above my 144Hz refresh rate, and feels a lot smoother

Depending on your budget make sure to get OLED

might sound crazy, but I was thinking of avoiding OLED. I use my PC a lot, and burn in could be an issue.

No it's not that crazy, but I also live on my computer using an oled, all the preventative features in monitors not a concern at least during 3 year warranty periods imo :) but if you want one to last 5-10 years then yeah avoid.

+1 for this. Burn in is not a major issue now with warranty cover

Just because you dont have it, doesnt mean its not going to happen. OLED DOES have burin risk, but all depends on how you use it.
Very true. If all you do is gaming and the odd browsing etc you will be fine. If you code 24/7 with static screens for hours probably not so. I think it's hard for some ppl to imagine ppl using PCs for non gaming

The risk is far lower than it used to be. Glad I finally ignored the risk and took the plunge. If it burns in I’ll just get a new screen, by which time the technology will have progressed anyway. Wish I had bought an OLED sooner tbh. Mostly gaming here though, with just the odd day here and there for work. I’m almost surprised I don’t have burn in given how often HUD elements are on there.

Well, for some fun, 4 months later, how did everyone's original plan for a 5090 work out?

Tidying my Desktop tonight and found a word doc the 'master plan' of choices for the 31st July launch, oh how that worked out. Choices (as if) plus prices I must have got from somewhere, maybe speculative tbf and for more some 'fun':

Asus Tuf (non oc) : £2500/€2985/$3112
Oc Tuf. : £2580/€3081/$3211
Asus Astral oc. : £2700/€3224/$3360
Asus Astral LC. : £2880/€3439/$3584
Msi Suprim soc. : £2600/€3105/$3236

My planned 1st choice was a budget of £2,500 for Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5090 Aorus Xtreme Waterforce 32GB (wasn't even available at launch as it turned out) and the backup was the Asus TUF plus a block for under £2,500.

Of course, never went to plan, but I'm now settled with a quiet Waterforce, for £100 over my original budget, which I think worked out well in the end?

Plan was to skip the 5090.

Then I was looking at the ASUS 5080 (need two hdmi, so has to be ASUS) but couldn’t get over the lower memory than my 7900XTX.

Then I wanted the 5090 non OC Asus Tuf, but couldn’t wait so got the OC version.

As you most likely know from the [too much] time I have spent here, I've been a bit up and down on my desire to upgrade from a 4090. As soon as the 5090 FE was in stock for the lowly price of £1,889 I could not resist :D

Even though it was a stressful time, I quite miss the excitement now. I was interested in the Asus Astral 5090, the MSI Suprim 5090 SOC and Gigabyte Aorus Master. I managed to get my hands on all 3 cards. I passed the Aorus Master to a relative that was dead set on that particular card. I ultimately returned the Suprim and kept the Astral when I got a sample with hardly any coil whine and a barely audible 4th fan for the cheapest price the Astral has ever been.
