Community Fibre

Just seen the community fibre are now offering 5 Gpbs @ £59. Is this an automatic upgrade for those on 3 Gpbs package, as I don't see their 3 Gpbs package anymore on their site?

Nothing has been confirmed from what I can see. I'm also on a 3Gbps package, but contract doesn't run out until December. I'm hoping they do the right thing and upgrade everyone to 5 Gbps when the time comes, but time will tell.

It won't be an automatic upgrade, but you can phone up and move to 5Gbps if you want.
Given how it all works I'm in agreement with @Caged here that this will be the likely outcome.

You won't get automatically upgraded (probably because there might be other factors in play where it might be more advantageous for you to remain on what you have; like certain discounts, etc), so it'll remain what you have. But a quick call would let you upgrade to 2.5/5 fairly easily. Although it looks like only 2.5 will remain a basica ONT/Modem+Router swap that you might be permitted to do yourself (maybe) without the need for one of their main engineers turning up to do. But the 5g one likely will, so that one probably will need an booked visit to get going, especially if you're first time joining.

Personally, at this rate, there might be 8 or even 10 on hand when I renew next, and I might cheekily ask if I can try it out temporily given I have a full 10g internal network ready to use it with. :)

My mate had CF installed and they gave him a dual band router not tri brand. Is it package/tier dependent?

Also does anyone know what's the best way to take the router to another room?

Yeah if I remember right, since mid last year the default device you get was Dual Band instead of Tri Band. The only way to get a different one was if you took up CF before that time and got the older Tri-Band model version, or if you're on one of the Premium packages and got their higher end model one for those speeds (1/2.5/5g).

Give them the basic math, often helps; You're paying £10 more (which I am guessing you're on 1g so likely £25 a month in order to reach £35 a month) which is less than 50% extra cost, but for more than double the return of product that you'll get.

Good Luck! :D

You're either thinking of the 5g connection, or the products have been updating fast since you last looked.

They're looking at the 2.5g one. I just checked the prices just now for 24 months. And it's £25 a month (24 months) for 1g standard package, £35 a month for 2.5g standard package (24 months). A bit more if you go with their Premium package.

1.5 year into my 2 year contract CF have randomly enabled CGNAT! Initially they said I had renewed my contract back in March, which I hadn’t, now they just keep replying saying upgrade to 2.5gbps to get CGNAT disabled.

Still arguing with them but it’s been nearly 2 weeks now and no further forward! I still don’t understand how they can randomly change my contract which they won’t answer.

In the meantime I’ve been trying to use ipv6 so added a firewall rule to allow access to one of my desktops but no matter what I do I can’t connect to it remotely. IPV6 online testers show that the port to that desktop is open but I can’t connect. Using the same IPv6 address in my local lan I can.

Checked event logs and there’s nothing in there so am wondering how I can try and work out what might be being blocked and where.

I sort of had that happen to me. Only it was only 12 months into a 24 months contract and it was the original first one as well. It didn't impact me much then so didn't have a fuss over it, but prior to renewing I mentioned this via a ticket to them, and when I renewed it got reverted back to non CGNAT for the connection; it's not a static IP, but a very sticky one, which is what I had initially anyway, so that's good enough for me.

Unfortunately, there is a vague level here where they do have it in their terms that they could enable CGNAT at any point. But changing it mid-contract seems weird. So I would put it in writing via a ticket as well as calling in about it. See if someone more senior sees it and does something about it. Note, that when I lost my connection, there was an extended outage that preceeded it, when they re-enabled it (sort of) that was when it went to CGNAT. Do you remember if your ONT/Modem and Router had an outage recently?

There was the outage a while back that caused a problem for the masses, think I changed my DNS settings to get back to working.

And now that you mention it there was a blip in the service where the ONT indicated no issue but both the router and repeater had the red light and I had to restart them both to get the service back. I bet that is when the config on my service changed but I can’t quite remember the exact day.

Just chatting to their CS and they say CGNAT is on the 2.5Gbps package, thought it was off above 1Gbps*. Hard no for me then, shame.

*I had it on mine but was lucky and they turned it off.

Edit - might have a confused CS agent. Their FAQ says premium 2.5 doesn't have CGNAT, anything below does.

Edit - all good, going to the premium 2.5 with no CGNAT.
