EV general discussion

Sorry you got told? Tedious regurgitation challenges my super skill = my skill of calling out low value posts.

Eh what? again it was clearly just a personal addendum not offering a view on whether it was a problem or not.

I'm pretty sure "I have no idea what it is like on the Born" makes it perfectly clear...

That was an addendum on the end that the Born probably wouldn't fit well with me - purely a personal note as I dislike the approach to controls on far too many new design cars - that wasn't me saying there was or wasn't anything wrong as per the start of my post I have no idea.
Which bit of the controls. Thats all I’m interested in as all I’ve read is journos complain the old software is a bit laggy and the steering wheel buttons. So it’s nothing mega drastic.

My post was in general - the reviews don't make it sound like the approach to controls is something which would work for me but as per the start of my post I have no idea - but the idea of things like haptic controls on the steering wheel isn't something which generally works for me personally.

PS contrary to some posters I do have passing experience in most things I post about - here for example a Polestar the other day and my brother has recently bought an ID.7 (which is way nicer than his old Golf actually for not having a sprawl of controls and displays and better implementation of climate control controls - but I still dislike not having some things as physical buttons).

Haptic controls are VW /Cupra only thing. So sounds like you were talking about the born then

They are fine once you realise you have to slide to change volume rather than try and press a button

Other cars like the Nissan Ariya have some haptic controls, they are also present in some cases on older cars. (One of the reasons behind my original post actually as I dislike their use there and the way they styled the hazard lights button into the dash along with some other related controls things in what is otherwise a car I quite like).

What numbers are you using ?

E tech 1710kg. Born 58kWh is 1840kg

Obviously the drive wheels make a big difference to how it drives.

I think the renault is lighter ... and yes with similar smaller battery born is 1800's

Motor120hp urban range150hp comfort range

Kerb weight (kg)14121449

58 kWh 204PS (V1, V2, V3) 58 kWh 230PS (V2, V3) 77 kWh 230PS (V2, V3)WEIGHTS Kerb weight [with driver] (kg) 1818 1838 1950

but I think there are still questions to answer by manufacturers if the cars are meeting similar crash protection , my e36 was 1300kg, a m3 e46csl 1385;

As johnny said please stop obesity - I wouldn't need to test drive a 2T car though to know how it feels going around a corner

So a born isn’t 500kg more than a e tech then. Again we are using numbers to talk about how a car feels. I went through the link to find the numbers and then realised it’s the R5. Not the Megane e tech ! The comparison came from ICDP talking about going to drive the megane then got the born. Why are you bringing a much smaller car with a smaller battery and no rear legroom into this?

A 2ton EV has the battery low so doesn’t drive like a 2 ton ICE.

Not sure why you picked a lightweight car that was 110kg lighter than a normal E46 M3. My e92 m3 is about 1625kg

More interior space, more comfort, more features, more wiring. Electric boots and seats etc. Why focus on crash protection ?

You can't go on just weight alone even though you can never entirely hide the weight - I've driven a fair few 2T vehicles and there is a big difference - some can even feel far better to drive than lighter ones.

(I'm probably an exception but up to a point I actually prefer driving a heavier vehicle as long as paired up with a decent engine).

Speaking of funny controls/control designs, i reckon on the MG4 they completely forgot about the rear fog light (as there is no control for it on the left hand light control stalk), so they just thought **** it and made it a random little button on the top left hand corner of the infotainment screen :D

I do wish there was more standardisation for stuff like that to be honest - I drive several different vehicles and none of them have precisely the same implementation for fog lights - on the VWs it is usually a dial button, or sometimes a toggle button, by your right knee, on the Nissans it is on the stalk but slightly different processes - and I don't use fog lights often enough to have it down as muscle memory.

My Corsa is 500kg heavier than the petrol version, You can definitely feel the weight but the car does not drive much different at all. If anything I would say it grips a bit better than the petrol version.

Evs cause the loss of another ship

The cargo ship, Morning Midas, has been abandoned and is on fire in the Pacific Ocean. The ship was carrying 3000 Chinese made vehicles to Mexico when one of its EVs caught fire. The 24 man crew were unable to stop the fire and all abandoned the ship for another rescue vessel

ANOTHER ship? perhaps this time it will actually be an EV fire which caused it but all the other "EV fire" caused disasters ended up being caused by ICE vehicles.

why is it when ever there is an ICE car fire or a gas explosion people do not suddenly start wailing about the danger of fossil fuels?

it has been shown time and again that statistically an EV is far less likely to catch fire than an ICE vehicle. and the good news is, IF you are worried about EV battery fires if you do a little homework you can choose to buy an EV even less likely still to catch fire - you just sacrifice a bit of energy density.

i cant read the link however you didnt mention if anyone was hurt. if not then that is great news and shows that people were able to get off safely before it got too dicey. who is to say it would have been that way if it had been full of petrol cars?

edit more info here

3000 cars, only 800 were EVs. it does not state there at least the cause of the fire was an EV, if the bloomberg one does then fair enough however my general reaction on any of these articles which infer it was an EV without coming out and categorically stating it as a fact is its just a vague clickbait FUD. It is sad i feel the need to be so cynical but experience has shown me that you cant trust anything from our news.

not when a news site will happily blame an EV for causing a fire when the very video the article posts shows an ICE vehicle with its car numberplate clearly visable is causing the fire and it takes seconds to do a tax check to prove it.

Everyone knows you only need fog lights on a clear dark night.:D

So 800 of the 3000 cars are evs.

It must be an ev.

Also please name the other ships that were burnt because of an ev starting the fire.
