Your bad driving encounters

Yeah seeing that increasingly - especially at night :( absolutely brain dead behaviour that can so foreseeably result in a totally avoidable incident in many instances as well.

Staring out the window at work: were in a one-way system so the road tends to always have a queue joining back into town.

Someone in a van was holding their phone up two-handed and moved off from stationary. The van lurched, the driver panicked and grabbed for the wheel but missed and put his hand on the dash. Other hand put the phone to his lap and he regained control.

Luckily the driver in front moved off fast enough to not be an issue. It's almost like you shouldn't be holding up your phone while driving!

One from tonight with a twist of instant karma

Temporary road closure in one direction making it a single lane one way road, with a blind bend. Closed side adorned with ROAD CLOSED and No Entry signs. Closure has been in place about 2.5weeks.

I'm driving through, the correct way when I see headlights coming around said blind bend. Now it's not just me that travelling in the right direction, there's a black Skoda behind me and tbh in a 39ft bus I wasn't going to be going backwards anyway so forced the offending car (which turned out to be a taxi) to reverse after much arm waving on his part. We got to the other end and the taxi is very much still positioned to go back down after we clear the way.

Anyhow, turns out the car behind, that black Skoda, had some fancy lights, which I know because he switched them on to show the taxi driver.....

Off duty Dr I presume? On a more serious note it amazes me the amount of people who drive up the 1 way outside my house the wrong way just because they cant be bothered taking the extra 30 seconds (if that) to go the proper way around. You point it out to them and they tell you to F off like I am the one being a total muppet! Drives me bonkers no pun intended.

Install a camera and send footage to police

There's a road near me (jocks lodge Beverley), that is having some extensive work done. 1 part of it is making a junction left turn only, the amount of people that ignore the sign (and the fact that the cones have a slip road curve to them) is astonishing. They've had to replace the cones a few times as people have hit them turning out right. They could turn left and do a u turn 100m down the road, but they must be too thick for that.

A very much on-duty unmarked police unit.

There is this roundabout on my commute where I slow down early for the yellow flashing lights pedestrian crossing and to avoid blocking the entry to a minor road just 2-3 metres before the same. There have been many occurrences where people block access to the minor roads and then you have vehicles queueing on opposite lane for that one car that needs to turn in. As expected traffic is busy on this part.

There were two cars ahead, one at the roundabout and another one on the crossing so I slowed down as I usually do to keep moving at 10 mph and ready to stop if any car that is exiting the roundabout in the opposite lane and needs to turn in. New Santa Fe driver this morning on the same stretch immediately flashes lights and motions with his finger for me to get going. I ignored him. Then the guy tries to overtake me after the exit on the roundabout in a 30 only to be cut off by the Q2 in front of me that switched to the right lane. Then he switched back behind me to stop at the lights anyway.

Why the haste? no one knows. Probably unhappy about his expensive Hyundai that is ugly and wants everyone to see that rear which is an abomination in car design.

Driving home last night there was a closure on the M25 and once it opened up, was down to 1 lane. Unfortunately they just signalled it with a single smart gantry, meaning half of the traffic got in the queue in lane 1 and the other 3 lanes carried on a couple of miles to see if the lane really did close. I made the mistake of getting in line early. It really does bring out the bad behaviour, people indicating left to join the stationary queue while shooting past at 20mph, rather than actually slowing down and finding a space.

It was also an awful night for middle lane autopilot, with lots of people sitting in lane 3 of 4 on an otherwise empty road. I found myself behind someone in lane 3 as I got past a crowd, they were doing an indicated 68mph. I figured as I was right behind them I'd overtake properly - they must have sped up because once I'd got past them and indicated to move over (and back across the 3 lanes), my Speedo said 88 and I was on camera markings. No flash but I may have a ticket coming my way.

**** it, I'll just undertake in future :o

Had to nip to Sainsburys, had a taxi driver pull out on me when I was on a roundabout then look surprised that I was there, drive into the carpark and a tool pulls right out on me then sticks his hand up, THEN slows right down just to try and make sure I hit him...
I'm driving so defensively these days, it's just getting worse every day. I mean, I've got a bright red car and the lights are on...
I was going to go out afterwards but just thought 'screw this!' and went home again

Unfortunately they are everywhere. Heading up the M5 to Cribbs Causeway and the traffic was pretty heavy. There was a white Focus doing the full GTA/Hollywood lane dodging and undertaking across all three lanes just to get a car ahead each time. He would have hit a truck in 3, as he under took from 1 back across, luckily they braked enough that he just missed their bumper.

Saw him dive across from 3 to take the exit and sure enough he was caught at the lights. He was in the left hand lane, so should have been taking the left exit but sure enough as soon as the light went amber, he floored it and went back across to the inside right lane. Really need a dashcam to get footage of such muppets.

We’re on a dual carriageway with 50 signs every hundred yards or so and the mysterious numbers 5 and 0 painted on the roads in a huge size. What speed shall we do? That’s right, 30.

And when we get to a 30mph zone, what speed shall we do? Bingo! 20mph.

#OldPeople

To be fair, another driver then joined in by doing 30mph in a 40mph.

Wouldn't bother me on a dual carriageway if you can get past, I'm more annoyed at the 40mph everywhere crowd. 40 in a 50, 40 in a 30, etc etc...

Yeah, it was a bit of unfortunate timing as I was turning off left and so were they. So with other cars to my right there wasn’t time to nip around them.

Can get to be a right pain on the dual carriageway though when you then have large vehicles restricted to 50-56MPH then having to pass them, etc. I honestly don't know why so many people can't do an appropriate reasonable speed for the limit and conditions when there is other traffic around - bit different if there is no one else around or a lightly used motorway, etc. etc.

Was returning from the Lake District today via M6 South. This should be enough for anyone to skip the post in hindsight on what to expect below.

Still TLDR; Heavy rains with minimal visibility and cars being driven very close to each other at 60- 70 mph. All family members were asleep in the car. Missus woke up after some time to check if I wasn't feeling drowsy. I said no, as this nightmare around me is scary enough to keep me awake. :p

Some notable bad driving being cut off very closely by a Land Cruiser in that horrific weather once it completed its overtake on me. Same again in minimal rain ahead by a Nissan Evalia(?).

Being tailgated by an Jaecoo J7 who I spotted pretty early as they weaved in traffic behind me. They took off doing about 90+ after I moved back in 3rd lane.

Then your typical BMW 118d tailgating even closer which made me lift off the throttle and drop my speed by a few clicks to make them aware of their naughtiness. He backed off, I completed my overtake briskly and move in. BMW proceeds to tailgate next car ahead.

The bit a few miles either side of Tebay can be terrible for it - I've seen it far too many times where the weather has closed in, big splodgy heavy rain and visibility down to single digit car lengths and you still get people bombing it along at 90+ in the outside lane... often seems to be the big Range Rovers and Land Cruisers for some reason but not exclusively so.

The other bit which has been discussed here before too is the lack of headlights due to over reliance on auto lights and DRLs. The rear lights don't come on and affects visibility for trailing vehicles.

Edit: Only the older vehicles that lack this feature had their lights on.

I don't see why manufacturers can't program a "wipers on (or active with autowipers), lights on" into the car. Yes that's even more reliance but it'd stop this.
