*** ROG XBOX Ally X Discussion Thread ***

Indeed, but they do still want a warden garden to collect that juicy 30% cut. That's where Sony, Valve and Nintendo amongst others are thriving. And Windows 11 PC is how where they are heading with this 'Xbox as a Service'. But it's still this challenge and question mark over how they bring all those existing Xbox users to their new world. This partnership with ASUS on its own isn't likely enough and very much a stepping stone.
They want everyone on gamepass. Hence why they are charging a small fortune for their new games.

In the FTC leaks it was shown they wanted 100m subscribers by fiscal year 2027. So yep; any and all network & services revenue. Which is what tends to get missed when discussing Microsoft abandoning hardware.

And I'm going off topic as I've said this before but I think all roads lead to Microsoft as a publisher anyway, a very successful one, with some form of content subscriptions. And the sooner the better in some ways. Here they've jumped from the console business where they mismanaged Xbox for years, to going up against the Guardians of PC gaming in Valve.

We are all gamers here, and have a shared interest. However, it's Xbox branded and is just a really powerful handheld gaming device, so if we are going to be pedantic, then go and Google the definition of a video game console.

Some google-fu suggests if anything, the other handheld threads in the PC forum should be in this forum ;)

It's about what the device is primarily for. Games are games. A device that is principally for playing video games with all other features and functionality being secondary is ipso facto a video game console. Either desktop or handheld. It matters not! :p

It's not about being pedantic, the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and soon to be Xbox ROG Ally play PC GAMES, I think that's a pretty simple distinction to make compared to Console games, otherwise merge the two forums, I would personally rather devices/hardware that are made to primarily play PC games be in the PC Games forum.

Apologies it's my comment that started this.

However on this forum specifically (not some wider debate) the precedent for this thread to be in the PC Games sub-forum was based on the logic that the Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Lenovo Go all have their official threads in that sub-forum and not in this Console & Games Hardware sub-forum. And given this is a Windows 11 handheld PC that doesn't play Xbox Console games it just makes sense to me for it to be in the same place.

It’s a handheld, if we’re going to truly separate then we shouldn’t have handheld threads in neither forum.

Not really, it's not hard to understand, PCs of all shapes and sizes play PC games, and there is a PC games forum, the discourse on PC games are different due to the ability to change specs and performance related discussion.

Disagree I’m aware of what a pc is I’m not dumb thanks used them in various sizes and formats since a kid and built many.

However this is more a handheld than it is a pc. Like I said are you going to pick this up and program on it, video edit etc just cause it has a windows? No your not your going to play games that are on PC and Consol.

I see argument for it being in both sections if anything.

For this device, it does make more sense in the PC section. It's not an Xbox, it's an Asus with an Xbox sticker.

If/when MS release an actual Xbox handheld, that's plays Xbox console games, then that would belong here.

These handheld PCs are are a grey area really, there's no right or wrong.

They're clearly not a 'PC' in terms of form factor or multi-purpose abilities but equally they're not really a 'console' in that all they effectively do is play PC games in a locked down form factor.

The lines get closer and closer to the point of being blurred with every new console iteration feeling closer and closer to being a PC with a custom OS and now the PC universe is approaching the same blurred lines with devices that are feeling closer and closer to a console but with a modified PC OS.

I think for me, they fall more on the side of 'PC' because of the fact they play PC games, rather than their own specific proprietary 'plug and play' games as you might expect from a proper console.

I think the days when everything was clearly one or the other are mostly behind us now.

In my view tit for tat over which forum this topic should be in is a waste of energy over something that doesn't really matter, and detracts from the topic at hand. On that note, I'll return to topic.

Does anyone know if the Xbox ally X will have hall sticks or official replaceable stick units (a bit like the PS5 Edge controller)?

Going by the lack of replies and interest from most people in the console forum, it’s probably best left in the PC section. Personally, I have zero interest in this handheld. Similar to the Steam Deck, don’t care. Sorry if that offends but there it is. Love the new tech though, that’s always interesting to me.

The fact there's as much discussion about whether this thread should be in a different sub-forum as the actual device is probably reflective of the general apathy towards the device itself given it's just a minor spec refresh of something that already exists under a slightly different name.

In terms of features and things it doesn't do much (perhaps even anything?) the existing Ally X doesn't already do, the revised cut down operating system will be available on the existing Ally X, it'll almost certainly be just as expensive as the existing Ally X, the screen is the same, the battery is the same etc. etc.
