*** ROG XBOX Ally X Discussion Thread ***

i love my ally but frankly speaking wasnt too excited about the release other than the bits about windows game mode operating system.. i think i will wait for panther lake based handhelds, the xbox ally x doesnt look like a proper upgrade and i dont know what they are thinking with the vanilla variant - its just going to tank at launch just like the base version of the og ally

Wonder if they’ll bother with a handheld series s now…or just skip that and go straight to these sort of devices.

I’ve owned both Decks and interested to see how much of an upgrade the X is. But mainly for the os updates as I have dual booted my OLED Deck before.
its expected to be +10-15% over the ally z1e/x
its not going to support fsr 4 due to hardware limitations
overall i think its going to have a very short shelf life

Expensive! Not sure of the market for these brick portables, surely at home the experience is much better (and cheaper!) using a proper Xbox + TV. For travel it's too clunky and who has time to play the style of games, which are typically far more involved and not say 30min portable phone games.

It is expensive but I am all in on handheld PC Gaming now. Since I got my Steam Deck I’ve played soooo many more games. This collaboration with ASUS can only be a good thing for competition. I will probably wait for performance comparisons however, as I would want to see a large boost in performance to move on from the Steam Deck.

70 games finished on my rog ally, the device has now been fully depreciated if you ask me

I mean fair enough because there are many games that are coming out that aren’t able to run comfortably I suppose…

But thanks to the Steam Deck, devs are taking this into consideration. Like with CyberPunk.

With this push from MS, I could only see this getting better.

The downside with them stepping away from dedicated hardware to a licensor, is you stop having a fixed/semi-fixed target hardware platform. That combined with target hardware specific optimisations are a large part of why traditionally games have run substantially better on a console with a lower overhead OS and optimised-for hardware, in comparison to a more generic PC system, and that's STILL relevant.
I mean, the Switch 2 is arguably less performant in terms of numbers, in comparison to the Steam Deck, however as users will attest, games are coming out looking and running better on the Switch 2, because they've been able to target and optimise for it's hardware specific features; and I've no reason to think that won't become more the case as devs become more used to the new architecture. Nintendo themselves did wonders with the Switch 1, which was essentially mobile phone/tablet hardware from 2013... consider some of the games that ran on it and what they achieved has been remarkable.

Microsoft stepping away from Xbox dedicated inhouse platform hardware is actually a bad thing for them, IMO.
I mean look at Sega; they stepped away from the hardware/console manufacturing business, and they're a shadow of what they used to be.

I don't mind them doing other licensed stuff on the side, but dropping the core Xbox hardware would be a bad mistake IMO.

switch 2 is definitely more powerful than SD, its equivalent to a 24CU amd apu, but held back by power limit, so in net terms i think it still comes ahead of SD

Looks to be in line with all the PC handheld pricing. 599/899 euro for the regular/X models supposedly.
Hopefully not too much more in £.

I'll go for the Ally X if that is the pricing difference, just tell the Mrs that it's the cheaper version :D

I picked up the current Rog Ally Z1 Extreme (Not X) as was on Prime sale at £399

First pc handheld and I think it’s brilliant. Makes me very interested in seeing how these are when they land as I’m still very much in camp of want one.

initial numbers are disappointing, the claw 8 seems to have a slight lead in raw performance + 8 gb extra ram, and it doesnt look like asus is going to undercut

I'm going to keep an eye on these when they drop, really happy with the Switch 2 atm, it's surprised me how good it is. Still will check out reviews and what not when these drop.
