New build PC - Upgrading from 8yr old pc

if you're going to drop 220 notes on the board, then this is objectively the better board: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...d-am5-b850-atx-motherboard-mot-msi-03993.html

compared to the gigabyte aorus elite vs the tomahawk max:

tomahawk has:
8 layer pcb (6 layer on the giga)
better vrms (14x 80A vs 14x 55A)
better audio solution (alc 4080 vs alc 1220/897 depending on revision version)
more fan headers (8 vs 6)
5gb ethernet vs 2.5g on the giga

giga has:
rear io: 12 usb ports compared to the tomahawk's 10 - but tomahawk has 3 usbc vs 1 usbc on the giga, so potentially even a win for the tomahawk

Great call, no reason not to swap it out then if it is the same price (currently anyway).

Very tempting at over £200 cheaper (since I wouldn't need to buy extra fans), I really wish it came in pink though, or even purple. Looks like a really nice case otherwise.

For gaming they're still relatively simple to buy, but if you have workstation type usage (especially hitting the CPU @ 100% for long periods) you do need to be more careful with picking stuff (motherboards, coolers), which is just a reality of higher-end CPUs having 12/16+ cores that can use 150+ watts at full load (some can use 300 or more when power unlocked :o ).

Yeah workstation focus is more important since it is going to be used as my work pc with gaming on the side, as I mentioned I don't play a lot of high demand games in general so focusing on game performance would be the wrong call here.

just save your money, the thermalright cooler come with its own tube of tf4/tf7 (can't remember which) which is up there with the best, in terms of performance

I don't doubt! However I do like the benefit of never having to change the thermal pad like you have to do with thermal paste (apparently).

CPUs suffer less from "pump out" compared to GPUs, realistically if you're never ever going to tinker with the computer then you'd be looking at 3-4 years (possibly even 5+ with newer, thicker pastes) for a thermal paste re-paste
by then you'd be dusting out your computer many times over anyway, so it's not that hard to re-paste the cpu at the same time during one of those dust outs

Yeah I'm not really a tinkerer of PCs, the most I do is install more hard drives when needed, very unlikely to do anything more advanced that that.

Interestingly I don't believe I have ever changed the thermal paste in my current, I'm half curious to do it just to see if anything would improve (not that I'm having any obvious slow down issues, but that might just be a 'boil the frog' situation).

I guess you have already seen the white motherboards, if you are going for the more pink theme might look nicer? I've been procrastinating over these two boards for a while.

£259.99 - MSI MPG B850 EDGE TI WIFI >> https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...d-am5-b850-atx-motherboard-mot-msi-03992.html
£224.99 - Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 ICE >> https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...t-am5-ddr5-atx-motherboard-mot-gig-03857.html

I actually had not, those look really nice. Shame there isn't any white version of the MSI tomahawk max., or alternatively shame it isn't on sale like the tomahawk is. I'll have to think on it, it would look nicer in the case for sure.

Might be of interest:

Snip

NZXT motherboards can be good with that kind of build too.

These look great, shame Overclockers stock none of them lol

It would be the b850 edge ti wifi, though rgb dragon looks like from the carbon..anyway, the white option.
Getting some price creep here though, and then you'll be looking at white ram/cooler etc

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £259.99 (includes delivery: £0.00)

I just helped a friend of my sons put together his new pc. Ended up an antec c5 with the tomahawk. case comes with 7 preinstalled fans. I can get a photo if you want an idea of look. It is smart and in white you can get the pink/purple theme anyway by just changing the rgb..the white case etc will just reflect that colour
got to dash for work, but just changed the fans etc in my 011d evo to pink. will throw up a pic of that..still get a nice effect (rather than paying the white tax)

Yeah, as you say price creep, if it was the same price as the tomahawk (on sale) then it would be an easier sell. I'm personally not too bothered about all white parts in a pink case, as cool as that would look. I mainly just want the case rather than a unifying colour scheme.

Yeah if you don't mind, always willing to entertain other options!

While I'm here, does anyone have any NAS recommendations, or other storage solutions that aren't external hdds (I bought one and it INSTANTLY broke so now I refuse to use them).
Never used or set up a NAS before so dunno how complicated it is.

Probably easiest to get one of those boxes that you just shove the drives into. There's probably a thread or two in one of the other sections. Something like qnap / synology / etc. Check which ones have better long term support / patching.

How much extra storage do you need? What kind of stuff you're going to put on it?

External drives are the easiest for backups or a small amount of data, but it is true that many of them are crap and won't last. Getting a NAS isn't automatically better though, it depends what drives you put in them, so if you put bad drives in the NAS that'll die just the same.

Generally: SSD storage is a waste for archive storage and might even be unsuitable (depending on what you're doing with it), though they aren't that expensive anymore.

How many computers does the NAS need to be available to?

I need to backup and also access my work files, of which are lots and varied in type and size, very important stuff. Currently I have 2 4tb HDDs I back up into/access when needed.

Only one PC needs access. I do have one of those Fideco cloner bays that I just dusted off to see if it works, have a couple of older HDDs in there, not sure how long they last but maybe this thing would be good enough for my purpose if I got new HDDs?

Edit: Just checked, I think the HDDs are from 2011 possibly lol
