*** The Official Nintendo Switch 2 ***

Switch 2's screen gets hammered by hardware unboxed. In some ways it's the worst gaming screen they've ever tested and significantly worse than the original switch screen

They say the problem with the screen is that Nintendo is purposefully making it run poorly to save battery life

The screen debacle just seems like Nintendo going the cheap route as it's acceptable for majority of people. Now that Youtubers put the magnifying glass to the issue, everything's on fire apparently. I haven't notice anything in particular from a few hours with Mario Kart and Fast Fusion. Doing an A-B test with a TV using 2D games, where the issue is supposed to be worst, I only notice the smearing when looking for it specifically.

The main issue with it is not about cost or price. Not including an OLED screen is about cost/price, but purposefully making an LCD screen run poorly is about increasing battery life, it doesn't affect cost/price.

Because of the issues with the screen, the 120hz is also a gimmick and you wont get any benefit from it. HDR is also poor, but that can't be fixed without going OLED; but the main issues with the screen can be fixed by enabling pixel overdrive but then the battery life would suffer

This IMO.

Mrs Sk8 can either barely notice the difference between TV broadcast in SD and HD or just doesn’t care.

The same can be applied to 60hz or 120hz on say a phone, barely notices, absolutely doesn’t care.

This is the kind of demographic the switch is aimed at and their core audience.

Oddly enough the LTT review of the switch basically said the screen isn’t the best but it’s ‘fine’.

In essence unless you are a sweaty nerd, you are not going to notice and that’s what Nintendo are banking on (and they are probably not wrong).

I'm glad I'm not a handheld gamer lol

Another benefit of 120Hz is how it reduces input latency in some games (or game engines), becuase of how it increases the polling rate even if the game isn't rendering the image for 120Hz. I cannot play SF6 with 120Hz off, you can really feel the difference. This is the same case on other consoles too.

Moving away from casegate - because, well, I don’t care. I got to the end of the single player MKW campaign and my word the whole Rainbow Road thing was absolutely amazing. The credits were brilliantly done as well. One of the best Nintendo being Nintendo sequences yet. Not since the ‘thank you’ ending of Odyssey have I seen anything as good. Fair play.
It's definitely my fave Rainbow Road, even if it's maybe a bit easier than previous ones.

The more I play of MKW the more I notice the little (and some bigger) nuances of depth to the gameplay and how I can use those things to place better in races, thought I'd be going back to play MK8 at some point but maybe not.

I feel like Nintendo just don't prioritise the screen when looking back on history. I still remember even as a kid thinking the original DS had a pretty bad screen which got rectified with the DS lite. The DSi XL is probably the exception to this as it has a very nice, albeit low resolution screen (that yellows over time). The OG 3DS screen was actually quite poor, and then with the new 3DS XL, they had a lottery regarding if you got a TN or IPS panel; the 2DS XL (which I still own) is a really crappy TN screen to the extent that I never really enjoyed using it because it was such low quality.

I never owned a Switch / Switch Lite but I got the LCD Steam Deck and was flabbergasted at how poor the screen was; I immediately upgraded to the OLED model and now it's the ultimate device.

It's a real shame, because I think the Switch 2 form factor is amazing. It's like they intentionally hamstrung the device by putting a garbage panel in there.

Definitely makes me excited about future devices though. Can't wait to see what the Steam Deck 2 will be.

You have to think about the costs of manufacturing these at volume, and what kind of profit margins they are dealing with.

The screen is most likely in the top 3 most expensive components in there. So they need to make sensible decisions from a manufacturing, parts cost and availability etc. as well as what "most" users of their device will notice.

Having one personally, and being a bit more on the "love a good screen" side of things, i actually think the panel is fine for the few hours of portable gaming it will provide. The rest of the time its docked on a nice OLED.

DF makes it out to be like it's a passive matrix LCD panel from the 90s. It’s fine, it's not an amazing LCD, but it's just fine. I do use OLED and VA, did use mini LED for a while as well as IPS a long time ago, so I'm used to different panel types, but again, the Switch 2’s LCD is fine. Way overblown issue as usual. But I do wish Nintendo didn't cheap out and went with OLED from the start and they could have avoided all of this crap.

Nintendo have always compromised on screen quality, the Switch OLED being the only exception. It took them about 14 years to add a bloody backlight to the Game Boy line! All because they wanted to save on power. It was one reason I preferred the Game Gear at the time; at least I could see what I was looking at in full colour even in the pitch black, without needing the power of the sun behind me.

£395 isn’t a lot of money these days, so if it added an extra £100 to the price for a high-quality OLED with proper HDR (1000+ nits) then so be it. You already had people complaining about the current price, which is ridiculous for the hardware you’re getting. People would still buy it in the tens of millions if it cost £495 for the base model. While they would still complain, it still would have sold in the tens of millions.

interesting points.

Trouble is the switch user base is split, some people NEVER play it handheld, some ONLY play it handheld.

Can I ask you this? Lets say the OLED only cost £100 more on the overall cost to consumer, but then also effected the battery meaning 1.5 hours MAX, would that be a trade off you would be happy with whilst stomaching the additional £100 cost on top?

I currently have my headphones connected to the TV directly using Bluetooth but I'm wondering if I should do it to the Switch 2 instead. The heaphones have a microphone in them but I'm not sure if I could use it in online play.

Which would you do? TV or Switch?

I find it interesting there isn't a Switch 2 Lite model. Maybe that'll come in the future sometime? But for me I'm a docked only user. I have a 4k TV but most of the stuff I watch is DVD or Blu-ray so 576p or 1080p.

Afaik microphone over Bluetooth won't work.

You either need to connect a headset to the Pro Controller jack or use a compatible headset that uses a USB adapter - apparently the PlayStation 5 Pulse 3D headset works.

I think you are right, it is nuanced and not at all obvious how you can gain an advantage as the short cuts are either hard to spot or I am missing stuff. I am definitely improving in online races but maybe that’s just luck. I feel it’s improving as a game the more I am improving. I’ve also re-downloaded 8 so I might check that out or as you say, not.

I wouldn’t be happy, but for a bright and fast responsive OLED, still with 120Hz and VRR, 30 mins would be a trade-off I could live with. But depending on the game and efficiency of the OLED panel, battery life could actually stay very similar or improve, especially if they do a chip die shrink on top.

FYI in theory USB Audio Class 1.x DAC/AMPs too. Have tested the Qudelix 5K and Fosi Audio K7 and both work fine with the Switch 2. Creative Sound Blaster X1 did not which is odd given it worked with the original Switch. Maybe a firmware update fixes it. So in theory a lot of these wireless USB headsets, or DAC/AMPs should work. You'll just need to do some research before hand.

I haven't personally been able to get a UAC 2.0 DAC to work with the Switch 2 despite what a few claim on reddit.

To be honest with the upgrades to the 2 Zelda games I have used this more via the TV already than the previous one. Well not quite but I am 90/10 TV and it was the other way around with the OG one.

Something I noticed earlier - I bought Mario Odyssey yesterday and when I started it today there was a new update which is interesting. Wonder what that was about since it’s been out for a long, long time. Looks great though I have to say. Maybe a res bump? Not sure.

It was 2.5 years from the Original Switch launch before we saw the Switch Lite

There was an update for Odyssey when the Switch 2 launched which improved visuals and performance
