Completely agree with this part. It seems a little bonkers to me that I can walk into Argos and pick up a copy of a brand new game for cheaper than it would be on the PS Store.

I understand the game studio/developer/publisher etc. wanting to offset some of that storefront % cost but you would think that logically it should be cheaper over digital.

I typically find end up buying PS Store 'Credit' from an online retailer (i.e. 50 quid of PS Store 'cash' costs me 42.99) so it ends up being largely the same price as physical - but I don't think that should be the way to go about it.

It's got nothing to do with wanting to offset some of the storefront cost. It's just pure greed from publishers. They don't make games for people to enjoy, they make games to line the pockets of their shareholders.

Thinking about rushing through death stranding because I want to play the second game. Are the side stories worth doing or should I be skipping them ? Not too bothered about rebuilding roads either.

If I recall, there aren't really side quests per se, just endless package deliveries outside of the forced ones through the main quest. I'm sure there are definitely a few additional worth doing in each region but I cannot recall which ones were good or not. There is definitely a good one in the first region but do not want to spoil it for you.

I didn't finish the first, not sure why, as I enjoyed what I played. I may get DS2 soon, not going to worry about finishing the first, just going to watch a story recap.

Great news. Cheaper digital is very much over due.
It won't happen, if there's any change that occurs as a result of this action it'll be that physical prices are increased to match digital pricing. The factors that result in physical copies being priced cheaply don't exist in the digital market so as much as I'm entirely in favour of cheaper games, the reality is it would require publishers to voluntarily reduce the price of their games. If Sony et al were forced tomorrow to take a maximum of 15% instead of 30%, the publisher would simply absorb that extra rather than reduce prices.

Fair enough. Then I’ll continue waiting for most stuff to hit sales.

Well quite. The entire PS Store credit thing just seems to show a method is there for a reduced price but it seems an entirely convoluted process for customers to get a better deal. Just reduce the prices or better yet, offer a less margined price for PSN subscribers while protecting the developer (Sony takes 15/20% instead of the usual 30% for non-PSN subscribers).
But you're acting like Sony is raking in the cash from PS5. They have a less than 10% profit margin over the course of the generation so far (if i am reading this chart correctly). 10% is considered the bare minimum as a worthwhile business endeavour.

I'm not arguing that Sony are raking it in or rinsing the customer. I'm just agog at the disparity between digital store release pricing and the cost of physical copies from retail stores. The price difference is contrary to what one might expect, given that digital versions typically avoid the overheads associated with physical products. The fact it costs more to purchase a digital licence than to buy a physical copy on release continues to boggle my mind.

Bulk purchasing, promotional activity and the fact that a copy of a game has a value attached to it and is therefore a risk sitting in inventory for a supplier or retailer all contribute towards physical games being cheaper. As physical sales continue to dwindle the difference in pricing will narrow.

This only adds to the frustration, highlighting the argument for better parity or perhaps offering a monetary benefit for customers when purchasing a digital licence. It's strange that a physical product has less value than a digital licence, even when considering the points you've made.

I understand the historical argument was not to undersell physical products, aiming to protect retail sales. However, that pendulum has long since swung, and now the reverse is true. Give it another few years and everything will be licence only; not a great situation for the consumer.

For those that have played Death Stranding 2 so far, how are you finding it?

I've been away with work this week so will only get to play it from tomorrow - but everything I've seen looks fantastic. Performance on the Pro seems brilliant too with the 'performance' mode option so really looking forward to getting lost in it until Ghost of Yotei comes out later this year.

Interested too. Wondering if the combat is less clunky and more fluid as the trailers seem to suggest. Is it now a worthwhile endeavour as opposed to just avoiding it entirely in the first one!

Perhaps worth a new thread to avoid any potential spoilers in here.

It’s weird as hell I’m sure Kojima has issues but it runs and looks stunning.

I love this being the general summary of anything from Kojima. 'It's absolutely mental, makes no sense and there are 45 minute long cut scenes but it's fantastic to play and I'd do it all again'.

Yeah - good shout. A separate thread might be worth doing, I'll possibly start one when I pick it up and start playing on Friday if one hasn't already been created.
