Buying an electric car, am I mad?

maybe he meant there will be another similar designed vehicle arriving in a few minutes .. but we are still waiting for estates (cla & neue klasse a way off)

their 2nd hand value only just approaching 30K though, did wonder about the the smart #3 brabus for original OP that are nearly at his £20K point.

Right then next bit of advice required.

Picked up the MG on Monday 16th, noticed it refused to charge on any sort of AC charger on Wednesday, dropped the dealer an email about the issue Thursday. After some research it appears it's not totally uncommon for the onboard charger in the gen 1 models to fail meaning no AC charge but fine on DC and once replaced with a gen 2 part it's all good.

Bought it from Evans Halshaw so they can't do anything to resolve it they have to talk to MG and get it booked in there. They've just come back and said MG can fit it in on 9th July (this could be for the replacement or it could be for the start of the "we need to do these steps before MG UK will authorise a repair under warranty") so no guarantee it will be fixed then.

Currently DC charging even on the cheap Supercharger rate is going to get expensive quickly as I do 3-400 miles a week.

Other than this issue the car is nice, low milage and has no other problems.

Part of me is saying suck it up as once it's done I don't have to worry about it (maybe see if I can push EH for a £500 refund which will cover a good chunk of DC charging cost), the other part is saying hand it back for a full refund and pick up another one from elsewhere (local MG dealer has one for basically the same price just a thousand more miles on the clock) but as it would still be a gen 1 car I may face this issue in the future anyway.

What are we thinking hive mind?

Offer them the choice - change it or ask for the cost you’ve had to spend on DC charging.

That seems strange to me. The ID7 is definitely big, and it has some height, but it's nothing out of the ordinary for a car of that size.

The Audi A6 and the Passat are basically the same height/size as the ID7 too, and I'm not sure many people are calling either of those a crossover!

Its just a massive Crossover to me really, the idea its a saloon its just that, only an idea.
It's certainly a mssive car at almost 5 metres long. I also find that it is quite tall when compared to an ICE saloon but then all electric cars are compared to their ICE equivalents. I'm looking to test drive an ID& GTX tourer if I can actually find one that isn't attached to a moronic dealer group who treat their demos like personal cars full of crap and never on site because it is used by the manager or some other rubbish. Tesla definitely have the right idea about test drives.

ID7 is 8cm taller. 1.54m vs 1.46m. Not massive diff but certainly not same height

[ ID7 being a bit taller gives it some rear seat space versus a a6 e-tron and like - for estatephile's&sinophile's maybe byd 06 touring will be the one ]

... what is the daily bill so far on public charging - assume you can't go to the MG garage for coffee everyday.

Some people have their own wacky definitions of what is a cross over vs SUV.

The ID.7 is accepted as a saloon by the motoring journalist community.. it's height and height to length ratio is clearly of a saloon.

The ID.7 is shorter than the ID.3, and an ID.3 is still (barely) in the hatchback category..

The ID3 is 4.26m. The ID7 is 4.96m long. 4.96m is very long! How did you think a id3 was longer? If you mean height then the id3 is as tall as an Ipace

Also the id7 is a hatchback as well, according to auto express https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/id7 and it does not have a boot opening the same as a saloon does. You only have to look at the rear to see. Size and dimensions have nothing to do with the class of the car..

Yeah, I meant not as tall obviously..

As for the iPace/ID.3, thats why I said it's borderline, but the ID.7 being less tall and massively longer means no sane person is going to categorise it as a crossover..

I do agree with the hatch/saloon confusion, this happens often, but we know what they mean..

The cognitive dissonance when people categorise cars differently despite them being almost identical in size is one of those eternal mysteries ;)

Had a colleague who insisted his Ioniq 5 was a hatchback but that my old I-Pace was an SUV. Refused to believe my I-Pace was actually smaller in height and only marginally longer and wider (with mirrors).

I think this confusion between saloon/sedan and hatchback stems from America as they even seem to think the i4 is a sedan https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/i4
I find it strange that even on an i4 forum American owners also call it a sedan when clearly it is not.

What is an i4 then? Sedan = saloon

I think the SUV saloon distinction is whether you get down into the vehicle or step up, with seat at lowest;
googles saying average lower leg (w/o foot) is 410mm, in that context a small just >100mm difference in roof height if that translates to seat height is a big deal - roll on slimmer battery packs.

interesting chart on bev/ice roof height, less complimentary for handling inertia as you turn/yaw in corners
