I ordered a 9800X3D whilst drunk. I've got a 7800X3D already, I'm assuming I can just swap them and not have to do anything else?

I've also got an AIO coming as well, looking forward to a tidier looking case with it.

Just make sure your bios is up to date before doing anything.

Another thing is to play some games or stress test the CPU to warm up the thermal paste to make it easier to remove the cooler

It's in, no issues at all really, the AIO wiring was complicated but it's all working.

Shame iCue constantly crashes on startup so I can't even customise anything. It's happened for a while now, I've tried uninstalling multiple times with Revo uninstaller with no luck at all. I have no idea why and can't find a solution.

I would remove ICue and use Signal RGB

So I’m looking to build a new machine, and it’s been a hot minute (11 years since I built my last one) and I’m looking at going AMD this time with either the 9800X3D or the the 7800X3D, there’s not a huge amount of difference in price really from what I’ve seen but I’m completely clueless if I should go with one or the other, it will be used for gaming at 1440p, no heavy video editing tasks just gaming and other coding type use, is there anything that should swing me one way or the other?

What is everyone getting for idle temps with this CPU?

I'm worried my fan setup with the new AIO is not helping. It's obviously a hot day, and the case is stuck under a desk with not much outlet for air, but my idle temps are 55-58c. This is with a Corsair h100i AOI with two 120mm fans. I've got the AIO radiator at the top of a Corsair 4000D case, with the two fans pushing the hot air out of the case (which probably doesn't help that they're pushing this over the radiator). I've got a single rear 120mm exhaust fan and three front mounted 120mm for intake fans. I also have a Palit 5090 which is probably generating a lot of heat.

Check your load temps - if they are fine then its probably nothing to worry about. It is a bit high for idle but could be some app keep stopping it from going truly idle like icue. I am at 43c just with browser/discord/battle.net etc running in a 26C room with mins of ~40C

From what I've seen, Seems like all 9800 kind of run hot idle regardless of what cooling you have, None of the AM5 CPUs come close to idle temps as Intel's equivalent do imo...but entirely different architecture so.

Mine right now is 57c idle with the cooler in sig, However my noctua intake fans are barely spinning as I've set the system to be quiet, same with CPU fan...all these of course ramp up when needed, But i don't think I've seen it go over 75c in rust.

And with the warmer weather right now its hard to get a true value with really how my cooling is doing, I mean its 20c outside, Probably like 25c in my room right now so all those come into affect.
Winter should be nice.

But with that said I'm super happy with my 9800,It just blows through, i literally got double the frame rates compared to my 265K (But il always have a soft spot for that CPU!).

Mine idles in the 40s, although with it being a bit warm lately, as I write, it's 47c. I have a 360mm AIO, I also undervolted it. I changed the voltage curve and now under load it just sits at the max clock speed, all cores, never exceeds low 60s.

Was the jump in performance worth it/noticeable when gaming?

I've never really done any benchmarks before changing it. I only really got it as I do a lot of VR so basically just wanted the best of the best. iRacing and other sim racing games feel better, but it could just be placebo. I think general benchmarks show anywhere between 10-20% performance increase though, depending on the task at hand.

no brainer 9800x3d, given the performance increase slightly price increase, cooler temps, and likelyhood of long term hold.

Ah that's fair enough then, yeah well either way you think it's better so take the possible placebo as a win ;) :D

In terms of the prices for buying brand new, is the 9800X3D worth the extra 75ish quid over the 7800X3D currently? That 75 goes a decent way towards RAM (around 105 for 32GB of DDR5 6000 @ CL30).
