The clutch master cylinder has cracked on my 11 plate golf, coupled with the fact that it's due a new cam belt and needs two new front tyres. I think it's finally time for the scrap yard in the sky for it. I've had it for over 10 years and done over 100k in it myself with it having 176k in total.

The issue is that I don't have any Mojo for a replacement car... and not excited at all, mainly put off by the prices of second hand motors and I don't want a brand new one as it will spend most days on the drive, I only tend to use it to get to and from the office 2 days a week, and at weekends for the gym and weekly shop.

Desirables:
- Ideally I want a small SUV with 4x4, I live in the sticks and my current work place is 4 junctions down the motorway in then into the countryside, also I'm struggling to get out of htachbacks now.
- German or Jap
- Diseal, nothing more that 2 litters

No-go:
anything made by GM...

I think I will budget myself upto 10k...

Here is the perfect car for you. Now your problem is deciding what type of body mist to get with it, I reckon you'd want something aquatic with citrus notes.

Are you sure you don't want to just fix it?

est max £300 for clutch master cylinder
est £450 for cambelt
£140 for two new tyres

Total £890

I just saved you £9,110 ... you're welcome.
OP mentioned this "also I'm struggling to get out of htachbacks now." Hence the need for change too. :)

If you want a SUV at around 10K that has a worthwhile 4x4 should conditions become inclement the VW Tiguan would be a top contender but at that price you may find they need a bit of work as well :s sadly they've held their value over the years relatively well so older ones are still commanding relatively high prices.

OP, you need to provide more details for anyone here to be able to suggest options that are on sale currently.
1) What is your location (city/town/village)?
2) How far are you willing to travel to view a car or are you happy with online photos/videos with car delivery arranged? (I wouldn't advise the latter but to each their own)
3) Requirements for acceptable age/mileage/transmission. (For example, I am not looking for cars that are older than 2016 and mileage above 80k, with automatic transmission)
4) Are you looking for only Trade (dealer) adverts or private sellers too?
5) It is best to keep the budget flexible as you could get a better, newer car for 10.5k or 11k.

As suggested above you could repair your current car and save money, but at that mileage there could be other perishable parts that could go wrong which nullifies the investment.
Or.. Life is too short to have the same car for more than 10 years. :)

Technically just do the clutch master cylinder and tyres.

Total £440

If op was planning on scrapping anyway just run until cambelt expires.

An 11 plate golf is too good scrap surely, despite the high miles they still are worth a decent wedge.

Skoda Yeti

German
Small SUV
4x4 (some of them)
Diseasel
Sub £10k

Not the most exciting car but they meet your stated criteria. Personally I would fix the Golf though.

This is what I'd do, especially if you don't care for something new. £1000 to last another two+ years seems like a bargain.

CRV would be a decent bet aswell
I've contacted a seller and waiting to see when I can view the car, it's hard without transport and living in the middle of no where.

I spent about 800 pounds on it two years ago fixing all the suspension and I was willing to scrap it this year if it failed it's mot, but since it passed I thought I keep it till the next bill came, which is now.

Spending £10k isn't a guarantee that you won't need to spend £800 (or indeed any amount) next year though. Tyres are a consumable so should never been included in any calculation.

That leaves the clutch master cylinder, which could just as easily go in 6 months time (i.e. out of warranty) on whatever you buy, and a cambelt, which again depending on what you buy might need doing next year anyway.

Don't try and justify a new car via "financial savings", as the purchase price blows that out every time. If you want a newer/different car then get one because that's what you want - you don't need to convince yourself or anyone else.

Yub I hear what you are saying, I do want a different car.. getting in and out of a 3 door hatch back is getting more difficult with my bad back and knee but still manageable.

the current road tax on my car is £35 pounds per year and the two makes and models I'm looking at.. X1 and CRV are in the £200 range for road tax.

seriously thou considering how much I paid for the golf 10 years ago, the miles I've put on her... she has been very cheap to run and keep going.
