Very much a work in progress, but I've created a floating L shaped desk in my study using some recycled Ikea Galant desks and extensions. I've fixed by 2x4 timber to the walls for the desk to sit on, I've also used a customised steel frame under it for additional support and then added a support bracket at one end which is behind the door, but now removed the need for legs. I'll be using Alex drawers for the frame to sit on in certain locations to provide additional support

I'm making progress, an now I'm exploring budget friendly options for a cable tray/tidy

I'd like to take advantage of the existing 2x4s, potentially mounting a cable tray to them,so I can put in my power strips and run cables to anywhere on the desk I need. I'll be dropping a series of desk grommets in using a holesaw this week, roughly every meter. Here's what it looks like so far.

While it's possible to source different trays on Amazon, they seem a bit hit an miss and expensive for what they are. I was thinking initially of running some square plastic guttering like this

with some of these brackets secured towards the bottom of the 2x4 face

However, there could be some heat from power strips / power bricks, so I'm leaning towards something metal. I then came across standard steel cable trays like this

Maybe paired with a 50mm x 150mm tray like this

The above might work, but I'll need to do some measurements and mock thing up, to check there is plenty of hand space to place things in/out of the tray including plugging stuff in. I might just attach the power extensions directly to the 2x4 leaving a couple of strategic gaps for those, that might make plugging things in easier too.

I was then thinking if that would work I could spray it a good colour to work with the room, although I don't think it would be visible when entering the room as it would be at the back of the desk closest to the wall.

I reckon I'd want to run 4-5 meters to cover the key areas under the desk.

If anyone has any other clever ideas i'm all ears, and keen to listen.

If you have a 3d printer I'd suggest looking at Underware: https://handsonkatie.com/underware-2-0-the-made-to-measure-collection/ (designed (with help from others) by our very own @katie279)

I's a brilliant system for under desk cable routing etc. I've used it on my son's PC desk and it's been brilliant, so neat and tidy, completely modular and so many different pieces to allow you to mount anything you like really.

Thanks, that looks awesome but I sadly don't own a 3d printer

I considered it, but it's a faff when placing and removing cables down the line. I'll keep it in mind though
get some 3M vsb tape and any such trunking can be well atatched until you want to move it

lol the (AI generated?) picture of the rat's nest under katy's desk https://i0.wp.com/handsonkatie.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Fitting.png?w=800&ssl=1
I don't need this bauhaus/minimalist style on my desk ... or in my electric car, just need to make sure I don't knock my coffee over , and can access a pad and paper.

AI generated?!? I don't need an AI to create a total mess, I do that myself thank you....! :D:cry:
