Probably the biggest irony is that he was only driving to the ferry back to the UK, instead of flying, because the doctors had advised him that it was risky to fly after an operation, if it wasnt for that he'd have been flying back....irony being that avoiding the risk of the flight actually ended up with his death.

Problem is Lambo, Ferrari, Aston Martin etc all make those as well.
Its not necessarily the speed that kills you, its being in a papier mache supercar that doesn't like being crashed. Todays monster SUVs are going to kill everyone but you. He may not have survived in one but there is a hell of a higher chance. When you see these supercars crash they are a horrorshow.
Not sure i agree with this there was a horror of a crash last thursday involving a gt3rs and an m2 at the nurburgring proper nasty porsche fuel cell exploded on impact at nearly 120mph and the driver walked away with just a few bruises mainly from the seatbelt
Its rng how the car comes out a lot of the time

It's not how fast you go but how fast you stop.
Bursting into flames and being very likely unconscious at the time doesn't help and would kill anyone regardless of the vehicle.

RIP to the guy and his brother but I'm just happy he didn't involve any other cars.
Regardless of who he was, seeing some people online (not here) trying to defend his speed or reasoning for speeding is sickening. Had this happened to some rich nobody, everyone would have very negative things to say about him.

Police say he was speeding but there are eyewitnesses that say he wasn't.
I'd be very surprised about that.
Also the local police report of a 100 meter skid mark kind of negates that in any case.
Just glad no one else was injured / killed.
It's obviously a sad thing that has happened no matter what anyone thinks.

The crash scene photos i.e. as on Sky don't show a 100M long skid mark but the marks on the road and the damage would tend to indicate they were doing in excess of 70MPH at the very least. The eye witnesses saw the vehicle some minutes before the incident and while they may confirm they weren't driving excessively fast at that point (or maybe not in general) don't cover the speeds they may have been doing in proximity to the site of the incident.
If they were overtaking when the tyre blow out happened, which the police seem to have said, then the only person who can say they were speeding is the person being overtaken.
Surely they have been asked about it, if not why not and did they even stop. All we have heard about is the two lorry drivers saying they passed them 5 mins and a few moments before the crash. Both say they were driving calmly.
But the speed is probably going to be above 70 mph on that road and overtaking, just like 99% of people who overtake in the UK on the motorway.

The limit on that road is apparently 130Km/h or around 80mph. Much like the majority in the UK many Portuguese drivers probably see the limit as a minimum, but even still, you can be doing 85-90 and not appear to be out of control and driving smoothly when others are only doing 5-10mph less.
According to Google 120KM/H/74MPH - seems a touch high for that road given people will probably push on in excess of 80 on what is a relatively winding dual-carriageway.

Both can be true. He could have not been speeding and then could have been speeding during the incident. Lord knows that car picks up ridiculous speed very quickly.
