Are there any decent free alternatives to MS office? ideally something with a similar interface?

I'm going to be upgrading my uncles system but when he got his current PC he couldn't get on with the office that was installed on Windows 10 so I installed Office 2007 on it for him.

Office 2007 works fine with Windows 11 but it would be nice to replace it with something that isn't nearly 20 years old and doesn't require installing extra service packs and updates separately.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a shot, from the screen shots libre looks nice and clean

If he updates some of his documents that are 10+ years old with these new programmes, will the documents still work on his old office version if he decided he wants to switch back?

Libra Office will work and look similar to older style office suites and likely be closest to what your Uncle would expect / want.

In Libre Writer, you can save the document file type in a wide range of formats from the newer .docx through to older .doc formats, and also some of the modern alternative open standards .odt*

* - it. defaults to the .odt format on a fresh install, but this can be changed in the settings.

LibreOffice is spot on and has an old school feel.

I don't get on with Google docs, it feels super sluggish to use and formatting can be a pig depending on what you're doing.

We go with LibreOffice for residential customers if they require an office suite, tell them to try the free one first if they can't get on with it for whatever reason then get M365.

WPS Offiice is excellent
I agree with this,

Hisotrically I have used Libre office, I have lived in Excel 2010 for a large portion of my working career. I can adapt to other suites ok Ish, but WPS seemed the most natural switch.
(I still use Libreoffice in Ubuntu)
