Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Quick update.

Got a friend to fit the S3 Intercooler, Downpipe with 200 Cell Sports Cat, and VIS HPFP.

The front came off...

Intercooler comparison... surprising how different they are.

Can anyone spot the difference in the fuel pumps that caused me a moment of panic ....?

And finally downpipe comparison.

Unsurprisingly its not made a colossal difference as it needs mapping, however, it certainly feels like the turbo spools up quicker (no precat, and only a 200 Cell cat will do that I guess).

It is going to R-Tech for a Stage 2+ tune with the inlet and injector cleaning package on August 6th.

There is a part of me very tempted to replace the turbo with a K03 Hybrid that has become available - but that also means K04 (S3) injectors too... I think the ~ 280 BHP and ~330Lb/Ft of torque I'll have post remap is probably absolutely fine..... !

This is the sort of graph I'm hoping for.... !

I had similar numbers torque wise when I went R-Tech S1 (just a map, no hardware but K04 from standard) and the difference was night and day. K03 does spool a bit earlier, too. With the right set up and tyres you'll want more in the future no doubt. :D

Cannot praise R-Tech enough. Wholesome bunch of guys that'll make sure the car is right before and after tuning. There's nobody better in the UK for your TFSI or TSI.

That is excellent.

The car needs new topmounts so I'm fitting some TTRS items. When the front lower arm bushes need doing I'll probably look out for some alloy arms and pair them with an anti lift kit.

Anti lift kit, uprated dogbone bushing + front & rear anti roll bars are all a must. Completely transforms the chassis.

DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) its pretty much a must have option on the Golf or any semi decent car in my opinion. Im glad that I specced it, or I would have gotten annoyed with the ride quality on our rubbish roads pretty early on if I hadn't. Just sticking it on Comfort mode makes it a lot mote bearable. I bet the Mk8 and Mk8.5 with even more adjustment option, makes it even more dialled in to what you want rather than the 3 options on the older DCC system.

Dynamic suspension is a must on any "sport" car, it was an optional $5k on my model so not many have it from this year

My golf doesn't have dcc and it sucks on bad quality roads, feel every bump so I'm the guy swerving on the road to miss all the potholes and taking bumps at 5mph

I wish VW allowed you to turn off the bloody parking auto braking for good!!

On several occasions reversing out of the garage it has slammed on the brakes convinced I was about to hit the wall or door or god knows what. It also did it yesterday when parking up in a shopping centre.

Far too oversensitive and scares the crap out of me too.

+1! It thought I was going to crash into a van whilst parking a week or so ago but it stopped so violently that I thought I had hit it. I got out to look and was about 5cm away. Close, but about as close as I thought I was.

I'm hoping that OBDeleven will be able to set this stuff on the 8.5 soon. I want this, lane keeping & speed warning to be permanently switched off.

Same with AEB and lane departure

Yea first thing i do is turn off that crap when i drive it but tiresome (due to laws i believe?) it can’t be set into a user profile.

Couple more thoughts on the Golf R 8.5...

Though the engine provides really good power it is pretty characterless. It sounds rubbish, which I expected, it's a 4 cylinder turbo and they are all the same in my experience, but that is where something like the 5 cylinder Audi would be better. For me sound is important to the event and it's lacklustre in that area. It does go well and seems quicker than 333bhp from the seat, but it does need revs to get the turbo going, more than I expected.

Yesterday I pushed it a bit harder, found a nice set of corners and did start to find the understeer. However, what impressed me is if you add power when the front starts to wash out, something you typically don't do with understeer the clever set up puts the power to the rear and the back brings the front into shape, which is really clever. I was trying to unsettle it, which I did but it reacted nicely to power and really felt more rear then front wheel drive, which for me is all good.

We have covered 1200 miles in it now and it's a very quick road car. It does need the active dampers I feel, pot holes are becoming annoying but don't unsettle it and quicker speeds actually improve that problem. I still think cross country on nice roads (without massive long bits) not much would be faster, clever little car but it does lack event really, it's just so capable.

Agreed on the sound. It's somewhat bland but with it being a 4 pot it's about what I was expecting.

Handing is good, I'm about 2k in and have been giving it some stick and so far have been impressed with how well it copes when I'm pushing on.

Have you tried out the launch control? I've only done it once but was surprised at how quick it felt. It feels like more than a 333ps car to me.

Well, Thats the end of my MK5 GTI owership. Put on ramp to MOT & noticed a hole in the sill. £715 to repair along with rear spring & brakes.

Gutted.

An example of the stupid front end crash nonsense, or whatever it's called. It seemed convinced I was going to crash here despite being well within my lane indicating left and there being nothing else in my lane.

It beeped several times but didn't slam the brakes on which was at least something.

My ID.7 does this regularly. It doesn’t deal well with a car which drives past me if I’m reversing or driving out of a space - it’s convinced it’s still there and if I try to move it’ll slam the brakes on.

Adrenaline spikes through the roof and stress levels rocket which can have a negative impact on my drive then.

I was in a car park in London one weekend and it kept doing it while I was just looking for a space. Not sure what it was about that car park.

Anyone replaced rims? thinking about getting a set cheapest possible for mk 7 gti might downgrade from 19" to 18 cheaper tyres for the long run.

I went from 19" Santiago's to 18" Protrack Ones, definitely helps the ride quality, Going back to Anglesey on the 1st so that'll be the first proper test on the new rims, will be interesting to see how it feels when really pushing.

Hello, I'm looking at a MK7 GTI but it has a confusing MOT record

2019 OK
2020 OK
2021 the famous EA888 coolant teak
2022
  • Nearside Front Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Rear Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Nearside Front Shock absorbers has light misting of oil (5.3.2 (b))
  • Offside Front Shock absorbers has light misting of oil (5.3.2 (b))
2023 OK

2024
  • Nearside Front Shock absorbers has light misting of oil (5.3.2 (b))
  • Offside Front Shock absorbers has light misting of oil (5.3.2 (b))

Is this a simple case of MOT testers being too picky sometimes?

I'd say so. Some stuff gets interpreted differently, some stuff gets missed. I had similar with my previous car.

Any sensible reason why the shocks are noted one year and not the next?

I am a bit sensitive because this car as DCC and I don't want to replace them!

I think the rust is a bit early, it was only noted on my MK6 at year 14

No, no sensible reason that I can think of unless the shock was replaced after the 2022 test and they started buggering about before the 2024 test. Seems very unlikely though I'd say.

Roughly how much are DCC shocks to replace?
