City Fibre

Noticed this on No One's website today as it appears to updating / broken layout. My service is still working ok but not filled with much faith going forward. Will def be moving once my contract is up at end of year.

We are no longer delivering new residential broadband services for Openreach or CityFibre broadband

Finally managed to get a week off work so I can have City Fibre installed (IDnet), Sadly I picked the wrong week lol. I was hoping they would come next week, but installation turned out to be in 14 days time. Damn. Still, looking forward to the extra speed boost (currently 67mb).

Was on Yayzi 900/900 but it was a complete nightmare (well documented), didn't want Yayzi mess v2 with Olilo (same guy) so gambled a bit with Vodafone - £28/pm with a static IP thrown in, been rock solid so far. Base ping is a few ms higher but no congestion issues at all.

Oddly since Liam left (aka we got offloaded to Exascale, had to set up new DD’s with a new payment processor and they were blocked from new sales on CF for the last 6 months) it’s been fast, reliable and drama free. Suggestion is his father was ex TT Business and thats how things got started, I could fill in more of the blanks, the trail of struck off companies etc. but as one of the named Olilo directors happens to be a member here and has posted in this very thread, perhaps they could tell us whats going on?

Either way, i’m riding out my no price increase term as long as things stay as they are, oddly I won’t be jumping to Olilo any time soon either.

If you have a look at the history of the directors and the way previous business’ ended, its quite a trail of carnage/strike off’s.

Went with Toob in the end. There was a 3 man installation team from CityFibre who showed up. I had expected they would bring it up from the pavement, but they had to take it off the nearest telegraph pole. Unfortunately that meant taking it over an abandoned front garden two along (hoarders) and through a very overgrown tree, so they used the old BT landline to pull it across and then removed that. Installation took about 2 hours, and they didn't stay to do any setup of the router despite originally offering to. Think they were keen to get going to the next job.

Had some trouble getting a connection initially, but then I got a text from Toob saying my connection had been activated and the router started working. Took me multiple goes to log in via the LinkSys app, which has terrible reviews so it wasn't really a surprise.

Anyway, it's worked well since those initial hiccups. I would say we're a medium usage household with two adults working from home and lots of smart devices/speakers/laptops etc. The router is very small and unobtrusive in my home, which I like. But I think the signal is a bit weaker than the Virgin Hub 5 that it replaced. I'm looking at whether to get a mesh node to complement it or just buy a better router but I'm really not sure. It hasn't caused any issues, just that I'd rather have faster internet in the fringes of the house. If anyone has experience buying a replacement or mesh nodes, let me know. I have an Asus RT-AX59U here which I could try but I don't know if it's any better than the Linksys SPNMX56 they supplied.
I am going from Virgin to Toob. I took the optional mesh points for £6 a month.

The Toob supplied router has 3 LAN ports, I need 4.

Switch will do all I need but having two boxes / occupying an additional power plug is annoying though. May look at a replacement router instead.

I can save you a lot of agro, time and money. Domestic routers don't tend to come with more than 4 ports because the overwhelming majority of people using a router at home don't need more than 4 ports. The tiny minority that do pay the £10 for a switch and eat the 2w power consumption because they are a insignificantly small minority. If it's really that much of a problem for you, then you can pay several hundred for something like a rack mount commercial set-up, but I suspect that isn't what you want either.

What I want is 4 ports - 2 computers, 1 printer, and 1 NAS. Its never been something I've bothered to check with ISP supplied routers because most consumer grade routers have a 4 port switch for the LAN and a separate WAN port.

Sorted, just used the existing router as it doesn't have locked down ISP specific firmware on it. Reconfigure from PPPoE to DHCP, all working correctly by the looks of it.

Nice to not have to set up WiFi, DHCP static leases, forwarding rules etc again.

Glad you got sorted, but to point out the obvious solution to one of those problems, you set a personal network SSID and password so in the event of a router or AP/Mesh change, you only have to put the details in on the router and everything works.

I finally purchased the flint 2 got it for £93 should be here in a few days, I wanted the flint 3 but it looks more of a downgrade to the flint 2.

Adding my no one details into the flint 2 is it straight forward?

Just found a video it is straight forward.
