Anyone routinely doing the keto diet?

I tried it many years ago out of curiosity, found the pee sticks very vague, so got the blood test this time. My son (7yo) is starting the keto diet now for medical reasons, very strict 4:1
So I'm going to do it alongside him for a few weeks to make it easier for him to try the foods he'll be eating, he does get 100% of his required calories on prescription alongside things like yoghurt and chocolate. Bit that's very boring.
Luckily he is a fan of dairy, fish, olives and nuts.
From memory I'll be going heavy on tinned fish, fresh salmon, mackerel, kippers, cheese, olive oil, coconut oil, fatty pork such as belly and streaky bacon, olives, nuts and seeds. Throw in some leafy greens with cider vinegar and olive oil as a dressing. Any other ideas?

I know to drink plenty of water maybe include a hydration tablet once a day for the magnesium and potassium.

Few places seen to differ on what your ketones should be 0.5 to 3.0 seems to be most common.
I think for my son they have said if he goes above 8.0 we're to give him some sugar.

I did it a few years back. Lost 3 stone in 2 months, which seemed all good. But at some point I wanted to eat other things, when I did that I very quickly put on twice the weight I lost. So my advice to a young person is eat real food and be active, build a routine that ensures you never get fat.

I'm not doing it to lose weight I'm doing it to help my son adjust to his new diet and introduce new foods.

I did keto for 4 years, I heard about the weight gain when coming off, but tbh when I came off I was very careful with what I ate and gradually introduced other carbs.

I genuinely feel so good when on keto, when I don' stay on it all the time though. I'll go on it for about 3 months, then come off for it a short time so I can enjoy things.

Beef, chicken, almonds and peanut butter.
Almond flour(ground almond) for pizza bases and the bottom bit of a cheesecake, soft cheese(philadelphia) for the top with vanilla extract and sucralose type sweetener powder.

Ps. And use almond flour for muffin type cakes, drop a few blueberries in and it takes away the dryness of the almond

Nut butters are a good idea, always have pecans and walnuts in.
Never baked with almond flour, only ever as an ingredient in curries. Keto cheese cake sounds great.

did Keto

1. Never trust a keto fart
2. google fathead pizza
3. Get used to weird things like xantham gum
4. Never trust a keto fart
5. Buy breath mints
6. You can buy strips to pee on to prove you are in ketosis
7. You will loose loads of weight
8. You are likely to put it all back on again if you are not careful
9. Drink saltwater in the first few days of moving to keto or you'll feel super ill
10. Never trust a keto fart

Been on it solid now for 5 years or so.

I/We (as the missus is also on it calling it a 'mans diet' due to amount of meat in it) have got to the point where we have 4 or 5 days 'amnesty' a year (Birthdays, XMas etc)

Most of the time the the food we eat is exactly what we would otherwise have, without spuds, bread etc. My wife is a very good cook, which helps. Last night was Chorizo chicken in a spicy tomato sauce with noodles (see below).

Supermarket shopping is an eye opener, missing whole aisles of food out. Things are better than before with some protein products making strides into pasta land. Holland & Barratt do some amazing Edamame bean (soya to you and me) noodles for instance. They're preferable to all but the best wheat flour based ones.

It's odd now to think of the shear quantity of food I used to eat, at speed. Eating now is less 'carbohydrate addict' and more 'savour the flavour', although that may be because I turned 60 during this time.

Already got a blood test kit. 0.4mmol this morning
Already know to take a hydration tablet each day, (use them when cycling so have plenty)
Fathead pizza looks nice, I have ordered some almond flour for stuff like that.

Yes so far I haven't had to change much. Tonight's tea was some smoked tinned herrings, olives, feta cheese, salad leaves with olive oil and oregano on, a few pine nuts, homemade cabbage and fennel coleslaw with mayonnaise and cider vinegar. So nothing really different to what I'd have some nights anyway.

Tomorrow I'm planning a lamb roast dinner, less on the carrots more on the courgette and broccoli.
Gravy I'm still thinking on, maybe more of a cream sauce, with the roasting juices, just reduced.

Ordered a 1kg bag of the pepper flavour of this. Friend said it's amazing blended up and used instead of breadcrumbs on fish and chicken.

0.9 mmol/l this morning so getting there. Blood tests are so much easier than the pee strips I remember using last time.
Thankfully my son really doesn't mind the twice daily tests the finger ***** doesn't bother him at all.

Do you monitor your ketones? Where do they level out, I'm at 1.9mmol/l this morning.
First day of headaches today as well but yesterday I felt strong when out on a light bike ride didn't expect that on an empty stomach.
I'm taking 1 High5 electrolyte, half in the morning half in the afternoon.

Ordered some of these to try. https://www.bulk.com/uk/products/diet-rice/bpf-dric

Not exactly relevant to keto, but peanut butter powder is a good alternative to nut butter if you're watching fat content. It's good to mix into protein shakes.
