As the title states, I'm looking for a good quality motherboard to compliment my newly purchased i9-14900K processor.

I have the Asus ROG Helios case and would prefer an Asus branded motherboard.

I currently have the i9-9900K and also looking to upgrade my RTX 3070 to possibly a 4090. Machine will mainly be used for a lot of upscaling of photos and videos.

Any recommendations / pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Honestly? I'd send it back and buy a 265K.

If I answer your question, I'd suggest getting a board with an 8 layer PCB and good heatsinks, because of the high power draw (especially under extended load).

HUB's roundups (YouTube) are a good place to start for thermal results.

Agree with Tetras if its an option. The 14900K is better at gaming, but the Arrowlake chips are excellent at workstation loads, they're borderline HEDT chips, rather than gaming chips, and optimised as such.
Based on what's been said, the Arrowlake system would sound more suitable for you?

Thanks for your replies guys, really appreciate it

Returning the CPU is not an option as I purchased it brand new but from a local seller at an outstanding price.

I don't really have time to possibly sell it on too unfortunately.

Any other recommendation for the i9-14900k other than the Z790 Apex?

Cheers

The best mid range board imo is the asrock Z790 nova wifi for £280 offers a lot and reviewed well .

There are so many options out there's but do you need the best of the best

I would argue that the Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Master is one of if not the best motherboards, if you really want the best, for the 14900K for a variety of reasons*, but you don't need to spend anything like that much (and availability is probably hit and miss now) to get a solid Z790 board.

* Partly because I will not recommend Asus to anyone ever after my experiences with them and even accounting for volume/popularity Asus boards seem to significantly increase the chances you will encounter degradation issues with the 14900K.

Understood, if you got a great price, then that changes things a bit as they've traditionally held pricing very well, and it'll still do a good job :)

Motherboards wise I've also seen recommendations on the Gigabyte Aorus Master X and Aorus Elite X Z790 boards, and to AVOID the Dark Hero board like your life depends on it haha

Thanks guys.

Having read your recommendations and coupled with a huge stroke of luck, I managed to get the Gigabyte Aorus Elite X Wifi7 board bundled with the i9-13900K processor for just £200 from someone locally.

I guess I'll just sell the processor on and keep the motherboard.

Appreciate your help.

Wow, that's a good deal assuming everything works well!
Maybe even consider keeping the 13900K just incase there are any issues with the 14900K, albeit, if you get the BIOS updated on that board ASAP, there shouldnt be.
That's a good idea, I'll keep the 13900K for a while just in case.

I'll update the BIOS on the board ASAP if you think it will help

Given the Firefox crash reports might be worth sticking to BIOS updates which have the 0x12B or C microcode - the 0x12F microcode seems to be causing some crashing (until more details are known).

EDIT: 0x12F doesn't seem to cause any permanent issues, but worth keeping in mind that you might get some crashes with it that don't happen with the earlier 0x12 microcode updates.
