Son has just started a new job and is insistent on working the night shift. I've tried to dissuade him but he's not having it. This would be 10pm to 6am and while he doesn't drive I have zero intention of picking him up at 6am and ideally won't be dropping him off either! It's about 3 miles to work and 3 miles back. Does anyone have any recommendations? Something legal, from the Indian food electrical retailer would be good too. Lights, waterproof etc.

I did search for a thread but anything I found was 4+ years old.

The main thing you note is legal. Technically they aren’t legal in most public spaces unless they are rented and are used only within designated areas.

None of them are legal to use on public land, unless they're part of an official trial.
Interesting, I thought there was a power and/or speed limitation before they became illegal. I guess that's a bust as I'm sure it wouldn't take much for a bored copper to see him on the way to work and decide to stop him, seize the thing and fine him. Bicycle it is!

I used to commute to work on an electric unicycle. Was about 4 miles each way. Did that for well over a year and my commute included going past a police station and I never had any issue. As long as you don't act like a tit whilst riding one, you'll not have any issues. Though I did used to wear a red light on my backpack to help being seen.

Brand was Ninebot (Ninebot One S2, is the one I still have) and I'm sure they make scooters too. If you get one that doesn't go past 15.5mph and not ride like an idiot, he'll not run into any trouble.

Did you work as a clown at the circus?? Don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone riding a unicycle irl other than in the ‘Big Top’ :p
Sadly not :(
I've seen loads. People in cities use them a lot.

They don't take up much room I guess is the key benefit

Yep, it was all about the space. Much easier to have it under my desk charging up whilst in the office than a big scooter.

There's a chap around these parts who rides one of those unicycle things. I **** you not, one day I was doing 40mph and he overtook me rather quickly. I reckon he must've been doing 60mph plus on that thing.

That said, he was properly kitted out, full-face helmet, motorcycle gear, enough lights to make a 60s Lambretta blush. Haven't seen him in a while come to think of it, I wonder if he's been nicked / faceplanted.

Yeah you can buy some really gnarly ones. I was tempted to upgrade me S2 to the Z10 which was able to do 28mph but also had bigger wheels so it would've been more comfortable but I changed job so had a much longer commute.

I'm sure there is a KingSong one that after a few hundred hours of riding it unlocks another mode that goes about 40mph and has a range of about 60 miles or something.

The power/speed/self propelling stuff is all to do with ebikes. Private owned Scooters/hoverboards/unicycle type things are all technically illegal, as Junglist says the chances of you actually having an issue unless riding them like an idiot is low but there's still the chance.

my thoughts :
  • Electric Bike - still need to peddle but its set to easy mode.

  • Hover board not fastes option

  • walk is an option for 3 mile he just wont like it after doing night shift and when its wet and windy. allow 1hr.
at 6am you have the commuter crowd going to work. 9-10am you might worry.

  • you can get electric motor bikes that are legal with a licence i believe deending on his age.

like with any of this good chance of theft as well unless its locked up securley some were out of the way.

likely he wont have issues with police but theres going to be some one having a bad day thats going to point it out and book him.

also consider charging times and distance. some of the electric scooters/hoverboard dont have a great range so what ever picked he also needs to consider how to get it home with out power. also charging could take 3+hrs.

Looking online, electric scooters seem to have range of 20-28 miles for a mid range one? or 10-15 miles for an entry level one?
