Doom - The Dark Ages (2025)

Just completed it. Much easier for me than 2016 and Eternal. I played both of those on the middle difficulty and still found them both tough. Played this one on ultra violence and didn’t have any real problems at all.

I think that the shield is overpowered, not complaining though as I really enjoyed using it. I’m not normally a fan of parrying but the window is so big in this game that it’s easy to do.

I ended up keeping path tracing turned off. I couldn’t see much difference with it on personally, it made the gpu use an extra 150 watts and the heat being pumped out into my already hot room wasn’t worth it.

I am also not using pathtracing because I found I had to use frame generation and the increased latency was really obvious in this game. I barely noticed the difference in graphics between pathtracing and ordinary raytracing (unlike in Indiana Jones) and the performance was so much better.

Finally got round to uninstalling NVApp and using OBS for game recordings. I found that with Doom NVApp keeps bringing the game back into its optimised settings screen even after I "hide" it, it also seems to keep changing the value to use the latest RR dll for some reason meaning the game ends up using Preset E instead of Transformer model/K.

Recorded a quick session earlier, seems great quality for 4K AV1 capture:

Actually enjoying this more than Eternal, even though I am dying more!

Nice vid, do you find this harder than eternal? as people say this is the easiest of the modern dooms....im loving eternal but do struggle with it even on easy lol

Eternal I found more tedious with all those jumping and air-time antics, so much more to concentrate on getting right, whereas on Dark Ages it's pure ground based strategy, the jumps merely involve deciding what height to land on to get the most ground quake to kill as many beasts as possible :D

The ground based strategy is difficult because the AI is so good, you have to have nearly 360 vision because those guys move quick in many cases and won't stand around and watch whilst you fight what's 180 degrees around your frontal vision etc. I haven't got all the weapons yet maybe this is why and some of the later unlocks make the Slayer rather OP?

Really want dark ages but man im crap at these games...even though i love them, im only on mission 4 on eternal and getting my butt kicked lol just had another quick blast and again, died in same arena.

With the recent Doom games Dark Ages is by far the simplest @mrk is simply making it look harder than it is. See green stuff coming at you deflect it, see the enemies armour glowing throw the shield at it (or use the mace) and apply the burn to keep replenishing your shields. Otherwise keep your eyes open for secrets and upgrade your weapons/shields. Come across a puzzle you can’t solve, the shield is probably the answer.

Hi all, will I enjoy this game if I preferred Doom 2016, to eternal? Don't get me wrong I liked eternal, but I didn't love it, nor was I drawn to keep playing hours of it, like I was with Doom 2016 - wether this was a placebo due to Doom 2016 being the first of the remakes/new style Doom, I don't know?
But there was definitely something with Eternal that felt a bit meh, especially towards finishing it? That or it was too much of the same and the lack of a plot and just mindless shooting that was starting to bore me maybe? Not that I'm like that, but just thinking outside the box here?
I see mixed opinions on this? Apparently it's a lot slower and some new things people hate, some enjoy?
I hear it runs flawlessly though? From day one release?

I think so, I prefer 2016 to Eternal too.

Leave it on harder difficulty and it gives you enough of a challenge.

I would say if you're on the fence I would wait for it to drop in price and pick it up on a sale. I've certainly had fun, but it is a mindless shooter and the guns and upgrades aren't anything special and you end up using 2-3 of what you have at most. The new shield mechanic is okay, but probably overused. Storywise, it's a variation of the typical Doom story, your an angry person with a gun killing the spawn of hell who are invading another realm.

As I said I've enjoyed my time with the game but it's unlikely I'll replay it anytime soon other than to look into the DLC later on.

Just play it on game Pass, it could cost you just £1, or nothing if you already have Game Pass.

Ah maybe it isn't a placebo then!

I am whiling to take a gamble buying it elsewhere ;) Yeah I might just go for the THPS3+4 remake instead then ;) And that's cheaper right out the gate, let alone for a key :)

Unfortunately, I don't have game pass. Maybe I'll pick it up next year for very cheap then, I think I'll just go for THPS3+4 remake instead, I've already planned to get the new Mafia, MGS3R, and Silent Hill F.

subbed to gamepass for 14 days as it was only £1 to try this...only done first mission but so far seems ok, didnt die anyway lol will continue playing and see if i can make it further than i have so far in eternal.

How's the ripping and tearing going? I have to admit I haven't started this one yet as I'm still trying to finish 100% Doom Eternal and Doom 2016 on the higher difficulties, but I'm dying quite a lot. :D Fingers crossed I'll get there in the end. Just curious about everyone's thoughts now it's been out for a while.

I'm really enjoying it. Different to the other Doom games, but a really good pick up and play have fun type of game. Different tactics play out, and although some parts have taken me several attempts, I've still not found it a grind or boring. No idea how far through I am though.

Definitely recommended

I'm enjoying it just as much as the last 2, the action is just as good, however the music isn't as good as the previous games.
The best part is I'm playing it on gamepass with the £1 14 day trial. It's pretty long with 22 levels but easily doable in the 14 days, i have 4 levels left and 3 days to go. Playing on nightmare and it's rough at the start with no upgrades but later on it gets a lot better.

Finished Dark Ages the other night, a fun game but for me the weakest in the series. Looks good and plays well with a decent FPS whilst Path Tracing is enabled, but gameplay is fairly basic. Probably not the sort of game I’d replay anytime soon, but will happily play through extra content when they release some DLC.
