EV general discussion

I hated having to look to the middle of the car to the big screen for the Speedo when I tested one

Megane a fair bit smaller I think? So it’ll feel different on the road as well but both are fine EVs

Any chance you can go back and get the Megane with a grant now?
I’m going to try and do that once more is known about it, it’s not due until the end of September anyway, so if I decide to stick with the Megane I can always cancel the order and reorder if need be to get the grant.

‘Secret’ but all over YouTube huh

Genuine question which hopefully you can answer - why has it taken so long after the ICE and PHEV models to get an EV out?

I see BMW with the i5 at the same time as the ICE models for example?
Embargo lifted same day. Some driving it on the off road course at Goodwood for example.

Flex nature has played to RR advantage frankly. v8 sales have been immense and allows refinement of this specific car as well as getting the cell supply and system in place. For example now will land with 800V unlike that i5. The cancelled XJ was pretty much an i5 anyway but deemed not good enough at the time and hence canned during COVID. COVID ruined everyone frankly, especially Jaguar.

A guy at work has a"friend" who works at jlr, apparently they are having trouble keeping the batteries cool.
How true this is remains to be seen.

I think this is important..
A lot of people a (me included) found it odd to have the speedo there when test driving, and its the number 1 feedback I get from everyone test driving a Tesla.
However I went ahead on the premise you can buy cheap third party offerings to fix that issue and have a Speedo in a more conventional position.

However like the vast majority of people find out buying one, you get used to it really quickly and it’s a non issue, in fact, going back to cars with normal speedo's I just don't even bat an eyelid..
Same for the ‘key fob’, or lack of, I swore I’d buy one (Tesla sell them), thinking using your phone or card would be weird, but again, I never bothered and it would make the Ux worse as just having your phone on you is just everyday life now so you just forget about 'keys' and actually find it weird and a faff having to go and find your key (or in my case, remove it from the key rack or faraday box)..

Interesting point about the grant.. Sceptically and as experience showed me, whether that full saving is passed on to the buyer or not, but it might lower the finance down so would be interesting.

I like the Megane, great example of an EV, it's not tiny and certainly can see the appeal..

I'm a firm believer in test driving things and not pouring over spec points..

Does anyone here tow with their EV?

I currently drive an E-NV200 40kwh van, however my partner is expecting ( :D ) and as such I want to make the switch to a vehicle better suited to family life - but I still want to be able to do "green waste" runs!!

Thinking of getting a small unbraked <750kg trailer for the tip runs, and towing with the new family EV (or sticking the tow bar on the partners Seat Ateca).

Many Model Ys have tow bars

Yes, I tow a caravan.

With a massive box trailer like a caravan you can expect -50% range so 140 miles behind something like a Model Y.

As for going tip runs with a small 750kg trailer, you are probably looking at -20% range but does it really matter given the tip will be within a few miles?

The only thing you need to watch is the towing capacity may be lower than you’d normally expect for a car of a particular size. My Y can only tow 1600kg where as a typical ICE ‘SUV’ of a similar size can typically tow 1800kg-2000kg. Tow bars from manufacturers can cost £lol but they fully integrate with the cars electronics which is a must these days.

As for the towing experience, I’d be more concerned about ripping the hitch off the trailer than running out of ‘go’ as you might on a typical 140bhp 4 pot diesel. The Y with a caravan on the back still accelerates faster in a straight line than most cars on the road which can catch a lot of people out.

Whats the charging situation like with a caravan? Unhitch and charge normally or can you find drive through style chargers that work with the caravan still hitched?

Unhitch usually. Or if it’s quiet or there is a suitable place, don’t unhitch and block a few spaces/chargers.

It very much depends on the layout and the length of the cable on the charger.

I asked the same question a couple of pages back, some EV's can tow and someone provided a link to EV Database which shows all that can.

I'm on the look out myself for a Tesla Model 3 as they can tow 1000kg BUT the car needed to be spec'd with it from the factory so a bit of searching is required for them.

Salmons Leap Osprey site is my go to example for the dedicated towing charging section you can see here.

I’d definitely consider the estate when mines due for replacement in 2 years, hopefully they will have sorted the 800v ‘issue’ by then.

This is the design philosophy I’m waiting for - all models are the same and you can choose between ICE, hybrid and BEV. the E Class estate is top of my list in a few years!

the arrival of 800's may pull the charging stations back to a drive through strategy - quicker turnover, reduced prices?, the action is the juice.

CLA does have lower rear seatwell floor-pan in ICE variant so must have an interesting production line.

Just been for a looksy around at some SUVs with my dad (think he is starting to want to offload the ENY1 soon). Got to say, wow, Audi... terrible interior quality. Had a look at a Q4 and Q5 s-line and the cheap scratchy plastics are everywhere, with tiny infotainment screens, along with pretty firm seating. Interior was just a dull place to be. Not impressed. They did have a very nice Q6 in though! BYD. Blown away by the quality of the Sealion. Inside is all lovely soft touch materials and the seats are more like arm chairs. So comfortable and loads of space. Looked well finished as well. Went to try and find a new electric Volvo but it looks like the EX60 isn't out yet, but the sales guy seemed to think he could get us one to test drive. I doubt that very much. He was new, so I expect a call next week to say "oops my bad" lol. BMW still on the the list but didn't have time today.
